Dear Friends

Coming home! No not more reflection on the Football World Cup, but reflection on ourselves, our own coming home. What fresh perspectives have we seen in our time away, what has our recreation enabled us to resolve on our return, what will our journey of life now offer for our homes our communities and workplaces? Amongst all the stories the Church tells through this long Trinity season of Jesus’ journeys through the Judean countryside with its stony paths, rocks and fields and along the shores of Galilee with invitation welcome hillside picnics and boat trips, there is the curious story told of Jesus returning to his home town. Here he could do no work, for here he was just the carpenter his mother’s son.

I’m reminded of the bleak nostalgia of Paul Simon’s ‘My little town’, reflection on a hapless childhood and the impatient expectation of adulthood, pledging allegiance, as the daily routine of American schooling, riding his bike past the gates of the factory, mum hanging laundry in the dirty breeze. Paul Simon the young child, against this greyscale backdrop, dreams of glory twitching like a finger on a trigger. The only redemption he offers his home town is but one line of optimism and hope ‘It’s not that the colours aren’t there, it’s just imagination they lack’ and here we might recall the glory of his song ‘Kodachrome’.

Well maybe you’re all reaching for your classic vinyl at this point, or searching through your streaming service for ‘Still Crazy..’ or ‘There goes rhymin’ Simon, and why not, but before you do the point of Jesus’ going home, and our return home from our travels, is our resolve as to what we will do here, what glory will we become part of in our vision of a Kodachrome world.

The glory of Jesus’ vision was to see God’s Kingdom on earth as in heaven, for all peoples and all creation, his heavenly home come near in his re-creative word and deed and that of his followers through the ages. This was the Good News he proclaimed as still proclaimed through disciples of his way today. Just as the hope of glory is rekindled in the achievements of Gary Southgate’s world cup team, we in our returning home may catch the vision and begin the work of living no longer in greyscale but full colour Kodachrome.

Yours in Christ.

Brin.

Stowmarket and District Camera Club

Justin Minns gave his talk ‘Landscape’ to the members on 14 May and we now fully understand why his pictures feature on some of the covers of ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’. He gave an interesting, helpful and inspiring talk which the members liked very much. I am sure some of us will be putting our new found knowledge to good use over the summer break.

On 11 June George Buxton came to judge our final competition before the summer break. As usual he made helpful and constructive comments on all of the entries. He then presented the Len Backhouse trophy to Roy Fidler for the best projected digital image (PDI) on the night – ‘Come fly with me’ and the Cyril and Mary Hall salver to Roy Ward for the best print on the night – ‘Cley Windmill’. Congratulations to you both.

“Come Fly with Me” Our end of season photoshoot took place on Sunday 24 June at Roy Fidler Southwold harbour. This was a wonderful venue with lots of interesting things to photograph. We also have several photoshoots throughout the summer including West Mersea (tides permitting), Snetterton, Walton-on-the-Naze and Audley End.

Our new season starts on Monday 10 September when we welcome prospective new members and catch up with existing members. The first meeting for prospective new members is free of charge, whenever they attend for the first time. “Cley Windmill” Roy Ward New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compact and bridge cameras.

Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us?

‘Do not be Anxious!’ (Matthew 6: 25)

I recently attended a service where the minister recalled a teaching aid used by another minister in all- age worship to illustrate the feeding of the 5,000. We were told that four empty cloth bags had been provided and four young people were asked to take one each, and help feed those present. To no surprise, they looked somewhat confused as to what to do, but were then let into a little secret that, sometimes during worship, adults were known to indulge in the eating of sweets – the rustling of paper usually gives the game away! (Does that ring true to you?!).

The four volunteers were given the task of going around the assembled group to seek out donations, and, sure enough, they discovered on their return to the front that their bags contained a generous selection of sweets. They were then instructed to go back among the congregation and make sure that everyone had a sweet. To their amazement there were lots left in the bags. A valuable teaching aid that demonstrated, in practical terms, that there is usually more than enough for to go round if those that had were prepared to share with those that hadn’t.

What we discovered on this occasion was that there were other lessons to be learnt. The minister, rather than gamble on producing an empty cloth bag, decided to be less courageous and produced one that was already full of sweets [‘The Lord provides for the good and the bad alike’? (refer Matthew 5: 45)]. He then suggested that a young adult present ‘give one to each person present’ – which they literally did by digging their hand into the bag and handing out a sweet to each person. This immediately caused a stir as people wanted to choose their own sweet, with voices becoming quite vocal. The young person took note and the handing out was changed.

If that wasn’t bad enough, on returning the bag back to the front, we discovered that some rows had been inadvertently missed out! People were shouting out in protest, so an adult took charge of the distribution, only to find that they too left a row out, and this time the reaction was for the whole row to stand up and shout so that they could be identified.

My reaction was to initially say ‘it’s only a sweet’, and to recall a tradition back home in the village (whether in the home or chapel) that, when entertaining guests, the cry would always ring out ‘FSB’ which means ‘Family stand back’. This was to ensure that invited guests had all that they needed before the hosts participated. We readily understood the consequence of having more guests than anticipated, but that didn’t matter as generous hospitality was key to the enjoyment of the occasion.

I’m reminded of the time that the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, and continually complaining and shouting out loud about their situation, declaring even that they would prefer to go back and suffer terrible hardship than persevere with limited supplies of food. The Lord’s answer was to send manna and quails for them to eat – and gave everyone sufficient for their daily needs. But again, scripture tells us that some greedily claimed more than they needed, only to discover that their hidden stash went mouldy before they had chance to eat. Valuable lessons needed to be learnt on their journey to a land of promise that they needed to be satisfied with what the Lord provides, for there is enough for all.

These are the wise words of Jesus: ‘Do not to be anxious about food and drink to keep you alive and about clothes to cover your body. Surely life is more than food, the body more than clothes’. (Matthew 6: 25) – spoken in the context of a God who richly supplies all our needs with enough to go around for all to share and enjoy.

Some years ago I was told of an incident in Moldova. A group of volunteers had gone over to support a number of villages, and came back with lots of stories. One that made an instant impression, was of a young girl outside her home who was given a bottle of pop as a gift. Rather than take a drink, she first called her younger siblings, who lined up and each took a drink from the bottle, with the young girl waiting her turn at the end of the row. Now that’s what I call true sharing, and having a concern for others before self. Far better than making a commotion for fear of missing out!

God Bless.

Chris

HAUGHLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORT – SEPTEMBER 2018

SUMMER IS OVER – or is it?

Over the summer break we have had such lovely sunny weather – however all our plants have been suffering. On behalf of Haughley in Bloom I would like to thank those diligent souls who have gone out regularly with watering cans and kept tubs and beds watered. If the tubs near you are looking the worse for wear it means no one has been watering them so perhaps you might like to help out?

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN and DEVELOPMENT

The consultation phase of the plan ended in early July and it is expected to be submitted to District Council very shortly.

There will be some preliminary work taking place on the field south of Fishponds Way shortly. These are standard archaeological investigations and the trenches will be backfilled when complete.

WORKING TOGETHER

Unfortunately due to the indisposition of the post holder, we currently have no regular litter picking in Haughley village. It goes without saying we would appreciate it if all residents used the litter bins provided or take rubbish home to minimise the problem

In an attempt to manage this situation we have arranged some community litter picking (you may have seen some of us out on Wednesday evening), and we would welcome any residents who are able to join us for about 1 hour. The next session will be on Saturday 8th September meeting at 10am on the Green. Please bring your own gloves.

JOB VACANCY

We have now established that we will soon be in a financial position to be able to employ a Parish Clerk, and therefore are advertising the vacancy. The advert appears elsewhere in the newsletter, on our Parish website, village Facebook page and the SALC website.

For further details please contact [email protected]

WETHERDEN PARISH COUNCIL Notes from the Parish Council Meeting held in July 2018

Council vacancies: We now have two vacancies on the council. If you would like to stand for the council and help improve your village, please do contact me or any of the councillors or come and meet us at the next meeting. WE NEED YOU!!! Minimum commitment 10 meetings a year, on the 3rd Monday evening of the month.

County Cllr Andrew Stringer updated us on the school transport proposals, and reported that there is to be a consultation on the provision of specialist education transport. A review of Highways services has also been launched. He reminded all to be vigilant on the road outside Lawn Farm Quarry, which will be dangerous when the rain finally comes. If you are concerned about the condition of the road, please contact the police.

District Cllr Rachel Eburne informed us of a new Health and Business scheme, which will see a small grant being paid to community facilities that allow people to use its toilets. Mid Suffolk now has a 6.5 year housing land supply in place, which is good news in terms of planning.

Public participation: a query was raised regarding yellow lines opposite School Meadow. This will be on the September agenda for further discussion.

Aggmax: this was the subject of lengthy discussions, due to a consultation about to end on the possible expansion of the quarry under the Minerals and Waste plan, and to a retrospective planning application in place for a concrete batching plant. The parish council will be objecting very strongly on grounds of noise, dust, dirt, operating hours etc. and demanding stricter conditions of operation and maintenance.

Updates on common/playing field: it is hoped to start work in mid August on painting the shed on the playing field. Discussions are still ongoing regarding the pavilion repair work.

Planning applications and decisions: The Bungalow, Base Green, erection of two storey extension and other works. No objections raised.

Actions: There is now a Facebook page for Wetherden village, with updated news. Please visit it and read/comment! If you want to report Highways matters, e.g. potholes, please use the SCC reporting tool.

https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/highway-maintenance/report-a-highways-issue/

Defibrillator: Wetherden has a defibrillator installed at the Village Hall. So far, since it has been there, it hasn't been used. However, it does need monitoring once a month. This entails making certain battery levels are maintained and ensuring that the pads are still viable, and that the access code is still functioning so when needed in an emergency the defibrillator can be opened. We need a small group of people who would be willing to help maintain its operational readiness. If you feel you are able to help please contact me.

Community Infrastructure Levy: Wetherden will be eligible to claim some money to use for the good of the village, due to housing projects that have taken place. Ideas for a long term strategy of what needs doing in the village will be discussed at the next meeting, so please do come along and have your say.

Next meeting Monday 17 September, 7.30 at the village hall.

Jen Larner, Clerk 01284 705548 [email protected]

‘Shoulder to Shoulder with all who serve”

Vice Chairman: Tim Hart ______

July and August were relatively quiet for the branch. However, this has not been the case for the Royal British Legion in general.

A decade after the end of WW1, the British Legion (as it was then known) arranged for veterans and war widows to visit the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8th August 1928.

Exactly 90 years later, thousands of Legion representatives created the 1928 Battlefields Pilgrimage and visited the same battlefields. On 8th August 2018, the Legion representatives paraded their branch standard and a wreath along the same route to the Menin Gate for the One Hundred Days ceremony to commemorate the last 100 days of WW1 and represent an entire generation that served while defending their country.

Unfortunately our branch was unable to attend for various reasons but I would like to imagine that the relatives of the 'lads' on our memorial took the opportunity to visit the locations in 1928.

Roy's monthly thought: " Never mind cycling from Lands’ end to John O’Groats wouldn't it be easier to cycle downhill from John O’Groats to Lands’ end"?

We need your support on the 8th September. Why? Because we have our annual quiz with BBQ food. You still have time to enter! Maximum of 6 per team at £7.50 per head and bring your own alcohol. Tickets available from Haughley Post Office or call Margaret on 01449 770353.

WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL

It’s a little known fact that National Fishing Month runs throughout the whole of August, with the aim of spreading the word and encourage more people to take up fishing as a hobby. We set our monthly Whist Drive for Friday 10th August, and it seemed as if Wetherden Village Hall was very much the “plaice” to be as we had eight and a half tables in play! We certainly had nothing to “carp” about anyway, and everyone seemed to be well and truly hooked on Whist , and to enjoy the evening. We waited with “baited” breath for the result of the Monthly Lottery, with the following landing cash prizes:-

1st Ivan Forsdyke £35

2nd Lynda Handyside £20

3rd Russell Tyte £10.25

PLEASE NOTE:- Our next Whist Drive will be held at Wetherden Village Hall on FRIDAY 14th September commencing at 7.30pm - admission price only £1, Why not test the water???? Whether you are a regular player, haven't played for years or have always wanted to play Whist, you will be made very welcome in a warm and friendly atmosphere!

News from your Mid Suffolk District Councillor

Visit from Chief Executive of Mid Suffolk District Council: On Friday 10th August I invited the Chief Executive, Arthur Charvonia, to visit Haughley to see what goes on in a typical Mid Suffolk village. He met several residents including the Chair of the Parish Council and Chair of the Playing Fields Committee and visited the Ron Crascall Pavilion (looking at the Football Club, Bowls Club etc), the School and the Village Hall. We walked through Haughley looking at the proposed development site in Green Road and generally at the services, shops, recent new housing, footpaths etc. I hope that the visit will help when needing support for future improvements in the area.

Review of Mid Suffolk Wards: The Local Government Boundary Commission for England has completed its review of electoral wards and decided that all the wards in Mid Suffolk should change. The Haughley & Wetherden Ward will now be the Haughley, Stowupland & Wetherden Ward which will include Old Newton, Gipping and Dagworth and will be represented by two district councillors. Once approved by Parliament, the changes will come into effect from the local elections in May 2019 so you will then be voting for two district councillors. Overall the number of councillors at Mid Suffolk will reduce from 40 to 34. More information is available via www.lgbce.org.uk and search for Mid Suffolk.
