More information Small Press Expo SPX (Small Press Expo) 2017, the premier event for indie Credits comics, cartooning and graphic novels, presents Spanish Presented by SPX and supported by graphic novelist and 2017 Eisner Award Finalist, Albert SPAIN arts & culture Monteys.

Albert Monteys is a Spanish graphic novelist and illustrator, known for his works in El Jueves, a weekly satirical magazine that he directed from 2006 until January 2011. He became well-known in the early 90s with the comic Mondo Lirondo, which he worked on with other illustrators.

In 1996 he presented his work Calavera Lunar at the Barcelona Comic Hall, obtaining the Best New Author award. He also created the series Carlitos Fax for the children’s magazine Mister K.

After his departure from El Jueves, in 2014, he founded a satirical monthly publication Orgullo y Satisfacción (Pride and Satisfaction) with other cartoonists. That same year Monteys began to publish a science fiction comic ¡Universo! (Universe!) in Panel Syndicate, winning a 2017 Eisner Award nomination for Best Digital Comic.

His comics combine humor and surrealism with diverse influences, such as underground comics, Spanish children comics from the Bruguera school, and classic superhero comics.

Science fiction is a realm of exploration and for marginalized voices, a place to imagine and redefine futures where basic power structures are deconstructed and societies are decolonized. Moderator Sloane Leong will lead a discussion with cartoonists Albert Monteys (Universe!), Alexis Zirrit (Space Riders), Alex Alice (Le Troisième Testament) and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder) who work in this genre about how they continue to reinvent the world and their future.
