The Champ's Long Wait for Classic Success... By Emma Berry "About bloody time," was Richard Hughes's response to his first British classic win aboard Sky Lantern in the 1000 Guineas after 25 years with a jockey's licence. It was very much a family affair for the reigning champion jockey, who turned 40 in January. His wife Lizzie, on hand to greet him with a hug as he was led back into the winner's enclosure, is the daughter of Sky Lantern's trainer Richard Hannon, while Hughes's father Dessie, Hannon Jr. and Hughes embrace who trains in Ireland on after win the Curragh, had travelled Racing Post to Newmarket to witness his son's milestone victory. Hughes first tasted success in the professional jockey ranks when winning aboard Scath Na Greine for his father at Naas in 1988. "I just went out there today feeling happy-go-lucky and it worked. It's a super day," said Hughes. "Things didn't go right the last day I rode her and I should have won on her in America. But I always believed in this filly and she came good. They didn't go over fast, but it was about getting her plenty of cover and then just trying to arrive there. They just got away from us in the dip but you have to come through horses on this filly." Richard Hannon Jr., assistant trainer to his father and the brother-in-law of Hughes, added, "I am delighted for 'Hughesie'--he deserves it. It is great for him and we are just delighted that he is one of ours. "She has done it really well,@ Hannon Jr. added of Sky Lantern. AWe might go further with her, maybe a mile and a quarter. Or there's the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas or the G1 Coronation S." For Hannon Sr., overseeing his runners at Salisbury while his son took charge at Newmarket, it marked a fourth British classic victory. He has won the 2000 Guineas on three occasions with Mon Fils (1973), Don't Forget Me (1987) and Tirol (1990), but this was a first in the fillies' version. Don't Forget Me and Tirol both doubled up to win the Irish 2000 Guineas, a race Hannon has also claimed with Canford Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}), ridden by Hughes. For several strides of the final furlong in the 1000 Guineas it looked as though the race would fall to Qatar Bloodstock's Just The Judge, who would have been a fitting winner being owned by the Al-Thani brothers, who sponsor the British Champions' Series through QIPCO. Success would also have gone some way towards compensating the filly's young trainer Charles Hills, whose first classic entrant in the same race last year, Gray Pearl (GB), was fatally injured in the starting stalls prior to the race. cont. p5 2013 Fee: $15,000 S&N FIRST YEARLINGS in 2013 DARBY DAN FARM Contact Ryan Norton: (859) 254-0424 3225 Old Frankfort Pike | Lexington, KY 40510 TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 5/6/13 • PAGE 5 of 13 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

Foals by: , MACHO UNO, REFUSE TO BEND, SHIROCCO, PEINTRE CÉLÈBRE, LINNGARI, AMIGONI, POUNCED, REDATTORE, IMPRESSION, SIPHON, TOP HAT, PIONEERING, and much more. “For the buyer, particularly the international buyer, a selected sale brings together a substantial number of exceptional, “hand-picked” individuals in one place at one time. Previously, buyers were forced to go farm to farm, which can mean many miles and lots of time. In Brazil, we gathered yearlings from 20 different farms from the three principal breeding areas: Bage, Curitiba, and Sao Paulo (covering well over 3,500 km on the ground, and more in the air).”

“In Brazil, the selections, averaged over the last four years, have produced 84% runners, 62% winners, and nearly 20% stakes winners. Champions Inchatillon (at three and four), Tenarin (at three), Alta Vista (at two and three), Uareoutlaw (at two), and GP Sao Paulo G1 winner Timeo were all products of this small, distinctive sale.” (Thomas Thornbury, TDN, 5/08/2012)

Joanne Nor: It is so refreshing and worthy that the Derby victory can go to a truly deserving team that allows the horse to dictate if he is ready to go in the Derby, and not a horse, who has been impatiently pushed beyond his growth limitations, in a hurry to make the Derby date. Orb is wonderfully bred, being a descendent of the great Ruffian, from the prolific sire line of A.P. Indy. Shug is one of the last of the great horsemen in racing from an era gone by when there was respect for the horse. It seems so many horses of today are simply treated as disposables. The lineage, and the owner/breeders of Orb have set the bar unusually high at a time when this industry needs a new hero. It wasn't just winning, it was the way he won on all levels. Superior jockey in Joel, superior training job, superior breeding, and just an all around team of consummate professionals. We need more of these old school leaders in our industry to carry on the sport of kings. Bravo!

Michael Bronzino, Palm Meadows Farm: As an owner and breeder--I live for Derby Weekend. It's been in my blood since I saw my first Derby in 1964. Why is it that a consortium of incompetents are trying to ruin it? Starting on Friday when I had to scramble to watch the Oaks on the Internet because our "leaders" put it on a cable station that no one watches. Then I found out on Saturday morning that the same people would not allow the early races from Churchill to be on TVG or HRTV except for tape-delay. Even though their main coverage didn't start till 4:00 p.m.! I was instantly transported back into the days of dial-up! It gets worse, I was asked my opinion during the week about who would win the Derby--I responded the same horse that will win the Triple Crown--Orb. So, I wanted to place a wager with my brother--for the umpteenth year in a row TVG had problems operating during Derby Day. You would think by now they would have enough software capacity to allow for the Derby crunch. How about the TV coverage itself: a boring Bob Costas piece on when he could have talked about Horse of the Year Wise Dan, another 20-something lady who had no knowledge of racing-- and absolutely no coverage of the New Mansion and all the private planes that jammed the airports. Folks that would bring a buzz to the public--to show our game is one of Kings and Queens--one in that overnight a small breeder can turn the tables on the giants in the game. It's one industry where people are trying to attain the highest levels of perfection for the sake of a majestic animal. Oh BTW did anyone say Shug for President? AROUND THE WORLD MONDAY, MAY 6, 2013
