Takolander What games writing teaches us about creative writing Deakin University Maria Takolander What games writing teaches us about creative writing: A case study of The Fullbright Company’s Gone Home Abstract: This paper challenges the popular perception of creativity as a characteristic of special individuals and, instead, proposes that creativity is an emergent event resulting from the dynamic interaction of a creative subject (or subjects), a social and cultural context, and the material artefact (itself embodying its own social and cultural history). This theory of creativity derives inspiration from the social psychology of creativity and, especially, the research of Vlad Petre Glăveanu, who analyses Romanian Easter-egg decoration to establish how creativity in all its manifestations occurs as a ‘distributed, dynamic, socio- cultural and developmental phenomenon’ (2014: 2, original emphasis). This paper focuses on games writing. Taking as its case study The Fullbright Company’s multi- award-winning computer game Gone Home (2013), and informed by an interview with The Fullbright Company’s Steve Gaynor, this paper attends to the ‘sociality, materiality and temporality of the creative work’ (Glăveanu 2014: 5). Having deliberately chosen a game with literary characteristics, the paper aims to arrive at a deeper appreciation of a new form of creative writing (conceived here in a way that accepts medial change as a fundamental part of literary history). It concludes with a reflection on the possibility for a less Romantic and elitist understanding of creative writing in its traditional forms. Laurie Duggan, The Epigrams of Martial Discussions of poetry's place in Australian public culture (especially those that appear in the mainstream press) generally propose two defining features of the condition of poetry. Firstly, there is the disjunction between poetry as something produced and as something consumed. Everyone, it seems, is a poet. No-one, apparently, reads poetry. If this is the case, then, it is no surprise that, as Simon Caterson put it recently in The Sunday Age, 'Poets have never been more numerous, and never less visible' (2005, p. 31). The idea that poets want to write but not read or buy poetry is a hyperbolic expression of the marginal status of poetry in the public sphere: its decline as a type of public speech, the withdrawal of mainstream publishers from the field, and the declining presence of poetry in secondary and tertiary curricula. Secondly, and in a related move, discussions of poetry as public culture tend to reify the role of the poet while highlighting, again, poetry's marginality. The anonymous piece from The Economist entitled 'Poetic Injustice' (which was reprinted in 1998 in The Australian) gives definitive expression to this: 'Whatever happened to poetry? Once poets spoke for the age and strutted the cultural stage as stars. What would European romanticism have been without Byron or Schiller? French symbolism without Rimbaud or Baudelaire? Anglo-American modernism without Eliot or Pound? It is easy now to forget just how ubiquitous poetry once was and how central to the cultivated life' (1998, p. -

Maria Takolander TEXT Vol 18 No 2 Deakin University Maria Takolander After Romanticism, psychoanalysis and postmodernism: New paradigms for theorising creativity Abstract While Romanticism, psychoanalysis and postmodern theory have provided the dominant paradigms for understanding creativity in the humanities in the past century, this paper argues that interdisciplinary engagement with sociobiology and the cognitive sciences might provide ground-breaking perspectives. Against the ‘supra-rational’, masculinist and solipsistic visions of creativity that have prevailed, the work of the sociobiologist Ellen Dissanayake and of the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio invite new ways of thinking about the role of the feeling body, femininity and mutuality in creative practice. This paper will survey Dissanayake’s and Damasio’s research to explore the possibility and desirability of a paradigm shift when it comes to understanding creativity, with poetry as a strategic focus for its argument. This paper is not interested in putting forward a new methodology for writing poetry but in recognising the embodied condition from which all poetry fundamentally arises. Keywords: theorising creativity, poetry, science Introduction It was upon studying WB Yeats’s poem ‘Long-legged Fly’ as a high-school- literature student that I was introduced to a mystical, ‘supra-rational’ theory of poetic creativity. The poem portrays Julius Caesar, Helen of Troy and Michelangelo channeling a mysterious and quiet genius as they work, in their respective ways, at preparing a battle plan, being beautiful and painting the Sistine chapel. Each stanza ends with the refrain: ‘Like a long-legged fly upon the stream / His [or Her] mind moves upon silence.’As a student I found the poem ethereal and compelling. -
