PROCESS AND OUTCOME MEASURES 25 APPENDIX: BERGEN/HUDSON COMPARISON OF HEALTH FACTORS/OUTCOMES INTRODUCTION The Bergen County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) was a joint project of the five Bergen non-profit acute care hospitals (Christian Health Care Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center, and The Valley Hospital); the Bergen County Department of Health Services; and The Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) of Bergen County. The group worked collaboratively for over a year in conjunction with John Snow, Inc, a vendor expert in community health needs assessments. This joint project provided the information needed to identify, prioritize and address the significant health needs throughout Bergen County, where Holy Name Medical Center (and the majority of its service area) is located. The Bergen County CHNA document thus is incorporated by reference in this document. The Holy Name Medical Center CHNA extracts findings from the Bergen County CHNA that are significant to the service areas of the Medical Center. -

HEALTHY March 2021 HEALTHCARE HEALTHY BEVERAGE POLICIES CASE STUDY Holy Name Medical Center HOSPITAL PROFILE Holy Name Medical Center • Located in Teaneck, New Jersey (Bergen County) stopped offering and selling sugary • 361 bed, private, not for profit, acute care facility; and artificially sweetened beverages admits about 32,000 patients each year throughout its facilities on July 7, • 4,900 employees 2020. This case study showcases how • Food service managed by Sodexo they developed this new policy and highlights key lessons for hospitals and • holyname.org health systems that are considering similar initiatives.1 Initiative Timeline 2015–2019: Laying the groundwork. Several years of food environment improvements preceded the hospital’s sugary drink reduction effort. These included eliminating deep fat fryers from its cafeteria, reducing the number and location of cafeteria soda fountains, and promoting healthy drinks through an employee newsletter. The cafeteria also introduced healthier food options using the Mediterranean diet as a framework following an internal study of hospital employees, which evaluated health changes associated with different dietary patterns. The Public Health Law Center and the American Cancer Society have partnered to develop resources to help organizations create healthier food environments, with a special focus on hospital and healthcare settings. www.publichealthlawcenter.org March 2021 October 2019: Coalescing. Holy Name joined the Learning Lab convened by the Public Health Law Center and the American Cancer Society along with nine other hospitals and health systems, with a goal of developing a new sugary drink policy.2 Holy Name assembled a team of administrative clinicians, food service representatives, and the organization’s director of human development. -

Its mission is to advance social justice and democratic values in the Korean-American community by advocating for policies and civic engagement that places educational access, preservation of cultural heritage, cross-cultural coalition building, and community prosperity at the forefront. Additionally the Foundation promotes equitable treatment of and outcomes for similarly situated underrepresented and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities across the United States and its territories where the Foundation is a major stakeholder in the community. 2020 was expected to be a watershed year, with the decennial U.S. Census and the Presidential Elections, and worldwide commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. It proved to be an earth-shattering year with the global pandemic bringing the world into a standstill and the civil unrest in the United States. Despite these challenges, the Foundation was able to effectively launch three successful initiatives that not only addressed these historic events but also generated both immediate and lasting positive impacts -- on a regional, national and global scale.
