The North Texas Athletic Communications Department welcomes your interest in Mean Green athletics. We will make every effort to aid your press coverage of our programs. For information on softball student-athletes or coaches, to set up interviews or photo shoots, please contact Aaron Salazar at 951-565-6561.

Media Credentials All requests for media credentials must go through Aaron Salazar at 951-565-6561 at least 24 hours before a game.

Interviews All student-athlete and coach interviews must be coordinated with the athletic communications department. We ask that all interview requests be made at least 24 hours in advance. No interviews are conducted on game days until after the game. Players’ cell phone numbers will not be given out. Generally, players and coaches are available for interviews after practice at Lovelace Stadium.

Photographers Credentials will only be issued to accredited photographers and should be requested in the same manner as general media credentials. Please make sure you read the guidelines about shooting a softball game at Lovelace Stadium, which are located in the softball pressbox and are available upon request.

Kozlowski was also instrumental in developing Kelli Schkade into an all- conference selection. In 2016, Schkade hit .393 with 70 hits, 26 doubles, 13 home runs and 42 RBI. Schkade’s .393 average is the second-best mark in program history. Prior to her stint at the NFCA, Kozlowski spent 12 years with the East Carolina Pirates, including the last six as an associate head coach, working primarily with the offense and outfielders. In addition to her on-field work, Kozlowski was the Pirates’ recruiting coordinator, scouting director and conditioning coach. There, she coached alongside head coach Tracey Kee and also coached fellow assistant Christina Merrida, who played there from 2007-10. Kozlowski was part of two NFCA Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year awards. The staff she was a part of guided the Pirates to consecutive NCAA Tournament regional final appearances and Conference USA Tournament championships while capturing the program’s first C-USA regular season crown in 2010. In addition to sharing the NFCA regional honor, Kozlowski has been an invaluable asset to Kee when the latter was named the C-USA Coach-of-the-Year in 2005, 2009 and 2010. From 2001-12, the Pirates amassed a record of 482-280-1 with Kozlowski as an assistant or associate head coach. In eight of those seasons, the team reached 40 or more victories. Prior to arriving at East Carolina, Kozlowski was an assistant to the softball team for one year and to the basketball team for two at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. She also spent two years as an assistant with the George Mason University softball program in Fairfax, Virginia, before her stint at Towson. Kozlowski gained additional experience coaching softball and basketball for three years at Smith Academy High School in Hatfield, Massachusetts. Kozlowski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Hofstra University, where she was a member of the basketball and softball teams for four seasons. On the basketball court, she led the Pride in assists as a junior with 78 after being named the team’s most improved player a year earlier. Merrida comes to North Texas from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where she was an assistant coach. She worked with the outfielders and the slappers for the 2013-14 season. Merrida also served as a volunteer assistant at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, from 2012-13. While at ECU, the centerfielder was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team as a senior. She went on to bat .269 that season, posted 50 hits and stole 21 bases. She was a part of team that won the school’s first Conference USA regular season and tournament championships and won a pair of NCAA Tournament games, including knocking out host and No. 7 national seed Texas. Merrida was a four-year starter at centerfield for the Pirates. Over the course of her career, she was one of the team’s leaders in runs scored and stolen bases. She finished fourth on the team in 2009 with a .281 batting average and 26 runs scored. As a sophomore, shed led the Pirates in runs scored with 37 and was second in stolen bases with 17. Merrida earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from East Carolina University in May 2011.

The new era of Mean Green softball started with a big swing of the bat. As a team, the Mean Green hit 44 home runs in 60 games in 2006, almost doubling last year’s total of 23. Sopho- more Kristina Fowler hit the team’s 44th home run during the tournament. The three-run home run helped defeat Western Kentucky for the second time. Fowler proved to be a thorn in the Hilltoppers’ side; she posted the game-winning hit in both wins against Western Kentucky. She also picked up both of the wins in the circle in those games. She finished the tournament with a 2-1 record and was named to the all-tournament team. She led the team with five runs batted in during the tournament and batted .400 in the four games.

Classmate Katya Muller joined her on the all-tournament team. She finished the season on a 13-game hitting streak, setting a school record. She posted three two-hit games and led the team with seven hits in the tourna- ment. The shortstop batted .538 in the tournament and finished her sophomore season hitting with a .332 average. The .332 average is a single-season best. Her 69 hits during the season is also a single-season record, surpassing Stephanie Cranmer’s 66 hits set in 2004.

2007 In 2007, the Mean Green played in its brand new softball complex: Lovelace Stadium. Located in next to the soccer field, Lovelace Stadium provided a true home-field advantage for the Mean Green. The team also had a locker room and training faciliites near the field.

Also in 2007, North Texas picked up two historic wins. The Mean Green defeated Texas Tech, 4-2, on the road. In the Sun Belt Tournament, NT upset top-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette. The victory against the Ragin’ Cajuns was the first in the series for the Mean Green and handed ULL its first loss in Sun Belt tournament history.
