BY GABRIELLE DECKELMAN Safe Ride and Designated Driver Shuttle are two free transportation methods available at night for University of Oregon students. DDS operates from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. every night of the week and can transport up to 10 students. All drivers are paid staff members from the University of Oregon. Safe Ride is open from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. on Sunday to Thursday and 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday during winter term. Times of service vary according to the term. Safe Ride can only transport three riders at a time. “They can only take three riders or less because their policy follows preventing domestic violence and safety,” Co-Director of DDS Lorin Anderberg said. “If you are in groups of three or more you are less likely than a group who’s smaller to have sexual assault or anything happen to you.” Designated Driver Shuttles’ mission is to prevent drunk driving and will transport students regardless of their level of intoxication. “As DDS we can’t take anyone to the bars or to the movies or anything like that,” Anderberg said. We can only give them one ride a night and it’s to their home address because we don’t want to be party shuttling or encouraging them to get more intoxicated and then even drive home later.” Gordon Friedman contributed to this report.
