Tonight is one of my favourite foodie stops on the trip: the Māori Hangi - a traditional feast cooked underground in a hangi pit. We arrive at Mitai Māori Village and learn all about the culture and observe customary traditions. After a formal welcome we listen to songs, watch dancing with Poi’s & what we’ve all been waiting for - the famous haka.. Then appetites ready to go - we feast! Fresh kumara (sweet potato), veggies & fall-off-the-bone, tender meat are delicious, infused with the smokey, earthy flavours of the hangi pit. Going back for seconds is definitely encouraged.
