Parish Mission St. Stephen is a Catholic community of faith striving to witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation call us to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work places, and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent, and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. We seek a sense of unity in Christ that leads us to be an open and welcoming people and a sense of joy in being graced by the gifts of God’s love. FATHER TOM’S TIDBITS Dear Friends, It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas everywhere you go. It is hard to not notice the excitement and fervor that is around us everywhere as we come closer to the Christmas holidays. This week we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. The Third Sunday of Advent is also known as “Gaudete Sunday." Gaudete means "rejoice" in Latin. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, "The Lord is near." This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose colored. The rose candle is burned beginning with the third week of Advent to symbolize the "half-way" point in the dark time of waiting. . This Sunday's Gospel continues last week's focus on John the Baptist and his role in preparing the way for Christ. Recall that last week's reading described John's appearance in the desert and established his connection with the prophetic tradition of Israel. If we were to read Luke's Gospel continuously, we would learn about John the Baptist challenging the crowds who came to him and calling upon them to show evidence of their repentance. John tells his listeners that they cannot rely on their lineage as Israelites because children of Abraham can be raised up from stones. Repentance, rather, must be observable in one's actions. Here, Luke is continuing to set up two important themes of his Gospel message: the Christian faith is expressed in one's actions, and the call to salvation is extended to everyone, Jews and Gentiles. In today's Gospel reading, the crowds ask John the Baptist for specifics. What evidence of repentance is required? John replies by naming concrete actions: crowds should share their food and cloaks; tax collectors should be just; soldiers should act fairly. The concern for justice is a hallmark of Luke's Gospel. When the crowd begins to wonder if John the Baptist might be the Messiah, John interprets his baptism and makes it clear that his ministry is in preparation for the Messiah. John the Baptist knows his place and role in God's plan of salvation. By encouraging the crowd to act similarly in accordance with their stations in life, John's teaching suggests that each person has a role to play in God's salvation. It is the great mystery of our salvation that God permits and even asks for human cooperation in his divine plans. It is beginning to really look like Christmas everywhere you go. The Christmas frenzy is exploding all around us. It is hard to believe that next weekend we will celebrating Christmas. Wasn’t is just yesterday that we were sitting down at the Thanksgiving table? As we make our last minute preparations for Christmas, I want to remind and invite everyone to join us for our Christmas Liturgies on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This Christmas Season gives us the perfect opportunity to once again make attending Mass the centerpiece of our holiday celebrations. I hope you will respond favorably to Christ’s invitation by joining us for our special liturgies this Christmas Season. I am inviting everyone to come home to our parish and share your holidays with us. I am also asking you, in the spirit of Christmas, to reach out to your family members, friends and neighbors and invite them to come with you to Church on Christmas. There are often many reasons why someone has stopped coming to Church for Christmas. Often the reasons are very simple to address. Maybe they are new to the neighborhood and they don’t feel comfortable going to a Church where they don’t know anyone. Or maybe they have been away from the Church for a while and they are unsure how to come back or if they would be welcome to come back. Or, in many cases, the reason they give is that no one asked them or invited them to go with them to Church on Christmas. So, for this Christmas, I am asking all of our parishioners, and those who attend Mass here, to reach out to anyone you may or may not know, who is not attending Mass here, and invite them to come with you to Mass on Christmas Eve or Day. Please tell them we want them to join us and be a part of our parish family as we come together to celebrate Christmas. Tell them they are welcome and we are looking forward to their joining us for Christmas. If everyone brings just one person, imagine what a powerful sign that would be and what a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas. It is also important for us to include our children in our Christmas Masses as well. Often too much emphasis is placed on Santa Claus and not the Christ Child. Children can easily identify Santa Claus, but how many of them recognize Jesus, Mary & Joseph? We are having a special Family Mass on Christmas Eve and we are inviting all the young children of our community to come to Jesus’ Birthday Party starting at 5PM. This celebration is especially appropriate for young children as a way for them to be a part of the Christmas celebration. The Christmas Story will be reenacted so that our children can watch and better understand what is really important at Christmas. All of our families with young children should make every effort to attend this Mass. This is a great way to pass on the story of Christmas to our children. We have much to do in a short amount of time. But if we all work together we will have a wonderful celebration of Christmas, our church will be filled, and gift of Christ’s coming in a stable in Bethlehem, which we celebrate at Christmas, will truly be a gift that we can all share, cherish and celebrate ogether as a parish family. Let’s make this happen. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel! SAINT STEPHEN’S ŚWIĘTA BOŻEGO NARODZENIA CHRISTMAS/NEW YEARS I NOWY ROK SCHEDULE W PARAFII ŚW. SZCZEPANA

Szerzył zasady życia wewnętrznego i dążenia do doskonałości ludzi świeckich. Był też rozchwytywanym kierownikiem duchowym. Pewnego razu przyszła do niego pobożna niewiasta, pytając, co ma robić, aby zostać świętą. Spodziewała się długich i poważnych rozważań, precyzyjnych wskazówek, nadzwyczajnych, wyjątkowych ćwiczeń ascetycznych. Tymczasem święty powiedział jej prostolinijnie: „Niech pani uważa, aby na przyszłość ciszej zamykać drzwi”.

Ta anegdota pokazuje ogromne zainteresowanie człowieka wskazaniami moralnymi. Jana Chrzciciela, pytały go: „Cóż więc mamy czynić?”.

Chodzi więc o likwidację egocentryzmu i znieczulicy.

Jednocześnie poprzez to nieograniczone dążenie do posiadania dochodzi do samounicestwienia.

Ile trzeba mieć pokory i wierności poleceniom Boga, by powiedzieć: „Idzie ode mnie mocniejszy, któremu nie jestem godzien rozwiązać rzemyka u sandałów”.

Zabijałeś, mordowałeś i wciąż przemyśliwasz, jakby to robić lepiej. Efrem:

Mistrzu i Panie mego życia, oddal ode mnie ducha lenistwa, rozproszenia, chęci górowania nad innymi i próżnego gadania. Udziel twojemu słudze ducha wstrzemięźliwości i pokory, ducha cierpliwości i miłości. Panie mój i Królu, daj mi zobaczyć własne błędy, a nigdy nie sądzić mego brata. Bądź błogosławiony, mój Panie, przez wszystkie wieki wieków. Amen.

But the pink candle is used today Monday, December 17th - 7:30 pm to represent joy. Today is called Gaudete Sunday, Our Lady of the Woods, 10731 W. 131st St., Orland Park - from the Latin word for “rejoice.” On the Tuesday, December 18th - 7:00 pm third Sunday, the pink candle is lit to announce Gaudete Sunday, a Sunday of rejoicing for Incarnation Church, 5757 W. 127th St., Palos Heights - Christ is coming near. SIMBANG GABI CELEBRATION Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition. It is a series of nine dawn masses. The mass starts as early as 4:00 a.m. It begins on December 16th and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December, which is the Midnight Mass. This tradition was introduced by the Spanish friars to allow the farmers to hear Mass before going to the fields early in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster.'' In the olden days, the church bells start ringing as early as three o' clock, waking people up so they can get ready for the four o'clock dawn Mass. The Roman Catholic churches across the nation start to open their doors shortly before the break of dawn to welcome the faithfuls to the Simbang Gabi Mass. Today, the tradition of Simbang Gabi continues whether you live in the city or in the province, although it is celebrated in new ways. Most churches are decorated with colorful lights and beautiful parol lanterns to welcome the church goers. The Nativity Scene or Belen is displayed in preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It shows baby Jesus in a manger with Mother Mary and Saint Joseph. There are shepherds and farm animals. A complete scenario of the Belen includes the three wise men carrying their gifts to the Infant Jesus and the star of Bethlehem that guided them in their journey. Shortly after the Mass, traditional delicacies awaits the church goers, there are food stalls right outside the church, popular favourites are , (rice cakes), puto bungbong, sa pasko, suman sa ibos, and usually served with tea or coffee. Hot (breakfast rolls) are also very popular. Simbang Gabi is a spiritual preparation for Christmas, in commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebration is also seen as a way of requesting blessings from the Lord, as most people believe that if one completes the whole series of nine dawn masses, wishes will be granted. Over the years, Filipino communities have made some changes in the way that this event is celebrated. Some urban parishes now celebrate Misa de Gallo around 8pm—9pm in the evening in order to accommodate the needs of the members of the community who have different work schedules. Simbang Gabi is also recognized by Catholic Filipino communities who are living elsewhere in the world. No matter how or when this celebration takes place, Simbang Gabi provides a strong indication of the depth of Catholicism among the Filipino people. The Asian Catholic Initiative Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago invites you to the Simbang Gabi Novena Masses in preparation for the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. Blessings to you and your loved ones during this Advent Season. Local celebrations will be held at 7PM in the following parishes. Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice in the peace that Jesus our Savior offers.

An Advent calendar is a special calendar which is used to count or celebrate the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. The calendar windows open to reveal an image, a poem, a portion of a story (such as the story of the Nativity of Jesus), or a small gift, such as a toy or a chocolate item. Often, each window has a Bible verse and Christian prayer printed on it, which Christians incorporate as part of their daily Advent devotions. Through the four weeks of Advent, we encourage you to use this devotional calendar to prepare for the celebration of Christ's coming into the world. The Parish Worship Team is providing our parish with daily suggestions throughout the Season of Advent, as suggestions to help make this time of Advent a true time of preparation for the Lord.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Advent is a season of preparation: we shop for gifts, plan parties, and decorate our homes for the coming of Christmas. Sometimes it is easy to forget the real mission of Advent: preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ. We are bombarded by commercial messages in which the reason for Christmas—Emmanuel, “God with us”—is absent or overlooked. However, the rituals and practices of our Catholic liturgies during this season can join us together with the People of God. United, we can offer messages of challenge and hope and express our desire for God's presence in our midst. Advent blends penitence, preparedness, and joy. We are called to consider our lives and to repent—or turn around—from those things that keep us from God. In this way, we repent and prepare for the Second Coming of the Lord. This theme of preparedness permeates the liturgies of Advent. Lastly we are called to be joyful as we get ready to celebrate the incarnation of our Savior in Bethlehem. We wait for the coming of Christ in human history at Bethlehem, in our hearts each day, and at the end of time. The readings of Advent direct us to be prepared as we “do not know the hour or the day” of Christ's coming. But it is the present to which we should give our attention. Christ comes to us each day in word and sacrament, in prayer and grace, and through the people in his Church. Can we try to be aware of his presence and power within our lives? Can we be open to his call and let him work through us in the world? What is the message of Advent? For what are we waiting? Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! Help us to know you, love you, and serve you. Increase our faith. Help us understand. Let us be your eyes, ears, and hands on earth. Let us show your love. Come!

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT PRAYER

We give thanks for the Child whom we celebrate this Advent Season — the Child Who came to earth as an infant, died and rose as our Savior, and for Whose coming again we wait with anticipation and love. All loving and powerful God, we rejoice with the glad song You have placed within our hearts. As we continue to celebrate Advent, remove our fears and help us to stand strong in Your ways. We pray for those whose hearts are frightened, whose bodies are weak from lack of the basic necessities in life. Help them to be strong, and to feel You O God even in their sorrow. Remind us that we await a mighty Savior, an infant child that will bring gladness to all. Open the eyes of all who are blind. Open the ears of all who have yet to hear Your Word. Please pray for those who are sick and in need of healing from our Time Intention Requested by: Divine Healer: Monday, December 17th 8:00am Phyllis Kabat Family Marilyn Alvarado Rex Knapp Jack Spedale Family Pearl Alvin Margaret Kulpinski Tuesday, December 18th Maria Ariza Howard Kuzelka 8:00am Gerardo Montalvo Family Kristen Caldwell Rex Knapp
