Wyndham on Sunday. The two sides met just twice this season, with one win going each way. The Magpies held control from early on, but were plagued with inefficient goalkicking, finishing with seven goals and 18 behinds. Their last game, in round 13 at Wootten Road saw the Suns steal a big 60 point upset, so all eyes will be on the decider on Sunday. Both teams looked even around contests, but Parkside’s forwards were more composed and organised going forward. The season’s leading goal kicker, Matthew Radziejewski, was immense yet again, commanding his teammates around the forward line and bullying opponents with his size and muscle. The Titans looked threatening in the final quarter, but struggled to get effective ball usage going forward. Tarneit’s defence should stand tall despite the loss however, as keeping a team like Parkside to just 60 points for the game is an accomplishment, particularly given their recent form and attacking firepower. UMPIRES CORNER

TEAMWORK THE KEY FOR UMPIRES By GRAEME HODGART Pre-season, mid-season and on the eve of the finals the message from Mark Westgarth has remained the same. On quite a few occasions throughout this season he has been reminding everyone about the need for all umpires to work together. Although the duties and roles of field umpires, boundary umpires and goal umpires differ markedly, they need to work together in order for games to progress smoothly. As for all teams within the WRFL, teamwork is a very important aspect. The local umpires work hard at officiating all games while displaying firm and precise teamwork between each other. It’s all about teamwork. It might be the case of one field umpire knowing exactly the right moment to hand over play to another field umpire. The boundary umpire may need to rely on the goal umpire to give an assist and indicate that the ball went out of bounds next to the behind post and didn’t sneak in for a behind. It may be the goal umpire giving a loud call of ‘Mine’ to alert both the field umpire and the boundary umpire that the ball just crossed the behind scoring line before being knocked back into the field of play. It’s all about teamwork. One aspect that the goal umpires have introduced this season is the Two Vees. In a bid to ensure that field umpires, in all grades, give a clear and precise ‘All Clear’ to the goal umpires after a score, the umpires are reminded about the Two Vees. This stands for visual and verbal. To avoid any confusion, when there is a score, the field umpires are asked to give the All Clear by looking directly at the goal umpire, and while giving a hand signal, calling out All Clear loud enough for the goal umpire to hear. It’s all about teamwork. Mark Westgarth has also constantly reminded all umpires that during games, whether they are practice games, home-and-away matches or games in the junior finals or senior finals, they need to demonstrate control, composure and communicate effectively with each other. This also includes showing these attributes with players and officials. Hopefully during the finals played this weekend you will be able to see positive example of umpires demonstrating control, showing composure in all circumstances and communicating effectively with each other and also with the players when called upon to do so. QUIZ In a senior WRFL final the siren goes to end the game and the goal umpires confirm that both teams have the same score. What happens next? (a) The two teams come back next week for the replay. (b) The teams play extra time until one team scores and is awarded the win. (c) The teams play extra time which is divided into two halves of five minutes. The team scoring the higher score wins. If the scores are level after the extra time then the process is repeated until a winner is declared. The correct answer is (c).
