ORGAN PRELUDE Mrs. Marietta Turner at the organ, HYMN Once to every man and nation Comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with falsehood, For the good or evil side: Then to side with truth is noble, When we share her wretched crust; Ere her cause bring fame and profit, And 'tis prosperous to be just.

Though the cause of evil prosper, Yet 'tis truth dlone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, And upon the throne be wrong. Then it is the brave man chooses, While the coward stands aside, Till the multitude make virtue Of the faith they have denied.

PRAYER RESPONSIVE READING Behold the dark hour came upon me, And I seemed as a child alone in the night; The tempest of evil raged within me, The darkness covered me as a cloud.• Man seemed unto me but as a straw upon the wind And as a leaf from a tree in a stormy blast. Then in my distress I recalled the unshakable . prophets, And my hope was renewed from the deathless courage of martyrs, Lo 1 through all the ages they have been the light of the future; In them was man shown the creative spirit incarnate. Whenever the past hath seen man in the grip of despair, Whenever evil hath laid hold upon him, There hath not lacked strength to bear the pain Or vision to redeem the failure; From out the past voices cry unto us, Courage i And from the future the spirit beckons, Hope I 0 my soul, dare to walk in the pathway of spirit; Let thy fellowship be with the great of aH ages. They call us into the communion of the immortals; Theirs are the songs of the wagr of the blessed. They stood the strain of earth's anguished in ages past, Keeping a 3pirit serene and unfettered. FOURTH ANNIVERSARY SERVICE

Sunday April 20, 1952

11 AM

ABRAHAM LINCOLN CENTRE 70C OAKk'OOD BOULEVARD

Guest Speaker . Dr. Edward J, Sparling President, Roosevelt College

Minister President Lewis A. McGee Jesse A. Reed, Jr. ORDER OF SERVICE

PRELUDE. Miss Marietta Turner OPENING SENTENCES MEDITATION VERSICLES: (all standing) Peace be with you. AND WITH ALL MANKIND. Lift up your hearts. WE LIFT THEM UP IN JOY AND PRAISE,

HYMN Life of ages, richly pour'd, Love of God, unspent and free, Flowing in the prophet's word And the people's liberty.

Never was to chosen race That unstinted tide confined; Thine is every time and place, Fountain sweet of heart and mind.

Breathing in the thinker's creed, Pulsing in the hero's blood, Nerving simplest thought and deed, Freshening time with truth and good.

READING RESPONSIVE READING The spirit of man shall reign over all the earth: He is the heir of all the ages since the dawn of time.

HE IS THE FULFILLMENT OF PROPHECY AND THE GOAL- OF GREAT HOPES BORN IN HIGH DESIRE,

Man's beginnings were in lowliness; his body and appetites bore the marks of the brute.

HE KNEW NOT HIS DIVINE ORIGIN, NOR SAW THE VISION OF MAT HE MIGHT BECOME In moments of blind passion he has destroyed the work of his own hands, the fruit of centuries he has trodden under foot.

YET IN HIS SOUL WAS THE UNQUENCHABLE SPARK OF DIVINE FIRE,

Though the way of his ascent has been through struggle and pain and defeat, out of conflict with evil has he found strength for victory.

THEREFORE WILL WE NOT DESPAIR OF THE SPIRIT OF MAN, FOR IN HIM IS POWER TO BLESS HIS OWN TIME AND TO BEQUEATH A HERITAGE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

Through knowledge he shall obtain mastery over his own life.

THROUGH BEAUTY HE SHALL SEE THE VISION OF ALL THINGS GOOD AND FAIR,

Through the spirit of love he shall dwell in peace and good will.

HE SHALL GLORY IN THE COMMON WELFARE OF MANKIND, HE SHALL TRIUMPH IN WISDOM AND EQUITY,

This is the goal of the ages that have been, of the centuries that are to be,

FOR THE DAY SHALL COME WHEN THE SPIRIT OF MAN SHALL REIGN OVER ALL THE EARTH.

CHORAL GROUP "Lead Kindly Light" Godard - Parks REMARKS Dr, James Luther Adams ADDRESS "ARE IDEALS PRACTICAL" Dr, Edward J. Sparling President, Roosevelt College PIANO SOLO "Hark, Hark, the Lark" Schubert Mrs. Lenamae Ingram OFFERTORY Cello Solo Mr. Harold Jefferson ANNOUNCEMENTS .'•-..- HYMN These things shall be, - a loftier race Than e'er the world hath known shall rise With flame of freedom in their souls, And light of knowledge in their eyes.

They shall be simple in their homes, And splendid in their public ways, Filling the mansions of the state With music and with hymns of praise.

Nation with nation, land with land, Unarmed shall live as comrades free; In every heart and brain shall throb The pulse of one fraternity.

Eugene and Lloyd Washington TO OUR FRIENDS:

In an effort to foster a more liberal religious body, to fur ther the movement of brotherly love, to move toward a more per fect human interrelationship, to reach for the goal of perfected human personality thru an intellectual rather than an emotional approach to religious activities—the Free (Religious Fellowship was organized in April, 1948.

In presenting this group to you today, the Laymen's League of F. R. F. is attempting to keep these desires alive in our mem bership and friends. Our membership is open to any person interested in attaining these objectives. Thank you for your participation.
