INTRODUCTION RESOURCES GEMSTONE MARBLE METALIC INDUSTRIAL RKS ENERG Y MIN GEODATA MTL INTRODUCTION

NWFP is dominated by occurrences of variety of Gemstones, metallic minerals (Gold & base metals) and variety of dimensional stones and industrial minerals, covering a total area of 74,521 Km² in the northwest of the country. The 27000 Km² of FATA is in addition, having separate entity.

National Mineral Policy, 1995, envisages institutional reforms. The Government. of NWFP, created the Directorate General Mines & Minerals (DGMM), NWFP in August, 2001 by integrating the three mineral related agencies i.e Mineral Wing of DICMD, Mineral Wing of SDA and Inspectorate of Mines, with the aim to provide one window facilities to attract as well as facilitate national and overseas investment in the mineral sector of the province.

HOME INTRODUCTION RESOURCES MARBLE METALIC INDUSTRIAL RKS ENERG Y MIN GEODATA R ACTIVITIES ON GEMSTONE RESOURCES

Government of NWFP developed two major Emerald resources viz: Mingora and Gujar Killi Emerald deposits in 70’s. The known resources have over 50 million carat reserves.

The entire gemstones resources of NWFP & were explored and mined by GEMCP w.e.f. 1979 – 1994 including Swat emeralds. GEMCP extracted 791,000 carats emeralds, 160,722 carats topaz. But despite depletion of resources, sustained a financial loss of about Rs.210 millions due to policy shortf alls.

The major emerald deposits/prospects have now been reserved for sizeable investment under 10 years mining leases in private sector.

In the year 2001, the EPD, DGMM launched a scheme for exploration and evaluation of Swat Emerald Belt , the geodata so generated is being placed for private investment.

Also initiated systematic exp loration of Chital reg ion for evaluation of known gemstones.

The Govt. of NWFP constituted the NWFP Gems & Mineral Promotion Committee having participation from both the public and private sector.

The DGMM has so far granted more than 50 Mining Leases under the said policy.

Initiated two PSDP funded projects sponsored by MPNR, to provide training for systematic prospecting and mine development of small gemstone leaseholds.

Establishment of a Gems Testing Section in MTL to facilitate exploration, mining, value addition and trading of gemstones in the private sector.

The activities are to facilitate the production and establishment of Gemstone Trade Centre including the GGIP in , being the hub of gem business.

On systematic Trade and Marketing of raw and cut/polished Gems in Peshawar, the present level of Exports worth about US$ 12 million are expected to be enhanced to about US$ 100 million in near future.

The Marble/Granite resources are rated in billion of tonnes, warranting systematic exploration and quarry development for block extraction, in private sector. The major Marble resources are ; Three (3) parallel belts of marble in Rashun, Gahriat & Drosh, estimated resources about one billion tonnes in Chitral. Extensive marb le belt of Mardan-Buner of more than one billion tonnes. Pink marble near Nowshera, of about 100 million tonne. Various other occurrences in NWFP. Extensive marb le in Bajour, Mohmand and Warsak areas of FATA.

Dark coloured Granites dominated by green shades ;

Mafic/ultramafic outcrops in Chitral, Swat and Kohistan, estimated resources are about 500 million tonne. Green metabasites and dark coloured diabase dikes in Chitral, Dir- Timergara, Swat and Kohistan, estimated to about one billion tonnes. Metasedimentary rocks in Chitral, Hazar a regions, estimated to be about 500 million tonnes.

Tirich Mir and Karakorum Batholith/granitoids in Chitral region, estimated resource about 500 million tonnes.

Kohistan Batholith in Dir, Swat and Kohistan, having sizeable outcrops for extraction of granite blocks, estimated resources about 1000 million tonnes.

Indian Mass Granitoids in Swat, Buner and Hazara regions, estimated to about 1000 million tonnes.

The Government of NWFP is plann ing systematic exp loration and Quarry development for Marble & Granite block extraction.

The DGMM is facilitating systematic geological survey and evaluation of marble & gran ite potential of NWFP to enh ance private sector investment.

A pilot marble quarry has been proposed for development in Buner (Swat), as a training institute to be operated jointly by the public/private sector.

A systematic training programme would be launched for skill development of the workers and the staff of the private mining concerns in block extraction.

The exercise is to enhance Marble & Granite exports from present level of US$ 4 million to about 80 million in near future in Pakistan.

Systematic exploration and geo-data generation through regional exploration programme (1992-2003) interpreted into 34 target areas of gold & base metals, covering 40000 sq kms area, warranting foreign investment. These are : Six targets over an accumulated area of 1000 Km² for gold, tungston, lead, zinc and nickel along the Pamir Block in Chitral. Five target areas of gold, copper, lead, zinc & silver as well as gold- platinum suit along the Karakorum Block, over an accumulated area of 800 Km². Fourteen targets over an accumulated area of 3000 Km² separately located in Drosh-Chitral, Dir, Timergara and Kohistan, along the geological belt of Kohistan Island Arc sequence of northern part of NWFP. Nine selected targets of gold, lead, zinc and other base metals over an accumulated area of 1300 Km² along the geological domains of Indian Mass in Swat and lower Hazara. Discovery of phorphyry type Gold-Copper mineralization upto 80 PPM gold values, copper upto 0.4 % values in one of the host rocks in Mirkani/Ushrait Drosh Chitral, over an area of 80 sq kms.
