SUNG

22ND MARCH 2020 - 10AM WELCOME In a development that feels particularly strange to us all, our churches are currently closed, due to the threat to both our worshipping communities and the wider community. We are a parish within the liberal Catholic tradition of the Anglican Church of Australia. We welcome people from all walks of life, and together we offer our praise to God. Whatever your faith or belief, particularly if you have little or none and are joining us to explore or find out more, we warmly invite you to take part as you can. If you are unfamiliar with the ritual customs of the Anglican Church, simply relax with the liturgy and let the rest of the congregation carry you in worship. If you would like to know more about our parish, please get in touch with us, either via the website, Facebook or email. You can find more information about parish life and activities on our website: www.fremantleanglican.com

ACCESSING THE LIVE-STREAM AND RESOURCES All the services held in the parish over the coming weeks will be behind closed doors physically, but accessible via the internet so you can take part in the worshipping life of the parish. Live stream: http://www.facebook.com/fremantleanglican You are invited to use the Facebook comment function to voice your presence at our services - either adding your “amen”, prayer intentions or a simple greeting of peace.

Resources for your prayer lives will be added over time to the parish website, and can be accessed here: http://www.fremantleanglican.com/covid19 We’re all feeling our way through this new development - please be patient as we come to terms with any technical issues!

2 | FROM THE PARISH PRIEST

Dear Friends,

The fourth Sunday in is known by a variety of names. In England it is - the Sunday that those in domestic service were allowed home to worship with their own families in their ‘mother’ churches. In this respect it becomes a little celebration in anticipation of . It is the mid- point of Lent, and traditionally the fast is temporarily relaxed, so is also known as . Lætare Sunday (literally Rejoice Sunday) comes from the idea that we start to lift our eyes towards the joy that is to come. This year, however, things are very different. We cannot gather together - and as we lift our eyes to the future it is a time of great uncertainty and anxiety. Liturgically we descend into the depths of despair, walking alongside Jesus as in the coming weeks we engage with his trial and death. Today we would normally lift our eyes towards the joy of Easter, reminding ourselves of the salvation that is coming, giving ourselves hope, that we might more fully and confidently engage with . Engagement looks different this year. We’ll feel our way through this together, looking after one another, while still assured that Jesus reigns, and new life is coming.

TODAY’S MUSIC

All our hymns are printed in this order of service, and are taken from Together in Song (TIS), the New English Hymnal (NEH) or Church Hymnary 4th Edition (CH4). Unless it means tampering with a classic, we endeavour to use inclusive language!

PROCESSIONAL HYMN | CH 462

The King of love my shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his And he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow, My ransomed soul he leadeth And, where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love he sought me And on his shoulder gently laid And home rejoicing brought me.

In death's dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spreadst a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure floweth!

| 5 And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never. Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise Within thy house forever.

Words: Henry William Baker (1821-77) Music: Dominus Regit Me, John Bacchus Dykes (1823-76)

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Minister Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled and wandered far off. Let us then ask for mercy, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence

All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

6 | (Translation: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.)

The Presider pronounces God’s forgiveness.

Priest Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: +pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

All Amen.

| 7 MINISTRY OF THE WORD

The people sit for the first reading from scripture. FIRST READING | 1 SAMUEL 16.1-13

The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ He said, ‘Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’ Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

At the end the reader says:

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God.

8 | PSALM 23

In response to the reading, the Psalm is led by the Cantor

All The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to rest in green pasture, and leadeth me by the still waters. /R 3 He restoreth my soul, and leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I should walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou dost prepare a [e]table before me in the sight of mine adversaries: thou dost anoint mine head with oil, and my cup runneth over. /R 6 Doubtless kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall remain a long season in the [g]house of the Lord. /R

SECOND READING | EPHESIANS 5.8-14

For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’

At the end the reader says:

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All thanks be to God.

| 9 GRADUAL HYMN | NEH 272

All for Jesus! All for Jesus! This our song shall ever be; For we have no hope, nor Saviour, If we have not hope in thee.

All for Jesus! Thou wilt give us Strength to serve thee hour by hour: None can move us from thy presence While we trust thy love and power.

All for Jesus! At thine Thou dost give us sweet content; There, dear Saviour, we receive thee In thy holy .

All for Jesus! Thou hast loved us, All for Jesus! Thou hast died, All for Jesus! Thou art with us, All for Jesus, glorified!

All for Jesus! All for Jesus! This the Church’s song shall be Till, at last, the flock is gathered One in love, and one in thee!

Words: WJ Sparrow-Simson (1859-1952) Music: All For Jesus, John Stainer (1840-1901)

10 | | JOHN 4.5-42

The people remain standing while the appointed minister proclaims the Gospel.

Minister The Lord be with you All and also with you. Minister The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All +Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see.

The neighbours and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ Then I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.”

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he dœs not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then dœs he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered,

| 11 “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God dœs not listen to sinners, but he dœs listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out.

Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” He said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped him.

Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.

Minister This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON | FR PATRICK

Following the sermon a short period of silence is observed.

12 | AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

The people stand.

Minister Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. All We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the +resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

| 13 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

The people may stand or sit for the prayers.

Priest Jesus, friend of all the world, we pray for courage to give up other things and to give ourselves to you this Lent.

The intercessor leads the prayers. The response is:

Intercessor Lord, in your mercy, All hear our prayer.

The intercessions are concluded with the words:

Priest Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. All Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

GREETING OF PEACE

The people stand.

Priest Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access to his grace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you All and also with you.

14 | OFFERTORY HYMN | NEH 184

The offertory hymn is sung during which the gifts of the people – at this time only bread and wine - are set on the altar. At home you might set your giving apart for the continued work of the church.

SHALL we not love thee, Mother dear, Whom Jesus loves so well, And to his glory year by year Thy praise and honour tell? Thee did he choose from whom to take True flesh, his flesh to be; In it to suffer for our sake, And by it make us free.

O wondrous depth of love divine, That he should bend so low; And, Mary, O what joy was thine The Saviour's love to know. Joy to be Mother of the Lord, Yet thine the truer bliss, In every thought and deed and word To be for ever his.

——

| 15 Now in the realm of life above Close to thy Son thou art, While on thy soul glad streams of love Flow from his . Jesu, the Virgin's holy Son, Praise we thy Mother blest; Grant when our earthly course is run, Life with the saints at rest.

Words: HW Baker (1821-77) Music: Coe Fen, Kenneth Nicholson Naylor (1931-1991)

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Priest Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. All Blessed be God for ever.

16 | THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Priest All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. He was tempted in every way as we are, yet he did not sin. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

| 17 Priest Merciful God, we thank you, for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

18 | On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Minister Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

| 19 Priest Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Priest As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

20 | BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND COMMUNION

Priest We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, All for we all share in the one bread.

The people sing the Agnus Dei

Priest Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The Presider begins the distribution of communion. At this time you may use this prayer at home:

In union, dear Father, with Christian people throughout the world and across the centuries gathered to make Eucharist, hearing your Holy Word and receiving the Precious Body and Blood, I offer you praise and thanksgiving. Even though I am exiled from tasting the Bread of Heaven and drinking the Cup of Life I pray that you will unite me with all the baptised and with your Son who gave his life for us. Come Lord Jesus, dwell in me and send your Holy Spirit that I may be filled with your presence. AMEN.

| 21 COMMUNION HYMN | NEH 294

The people remain seated to sing the hymn.

Just as I am, without one plea But that thy blood was shed for me, And that thou bidd'st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings within, and fears without, O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am (thy love unknown Has broken every barrier down), Now to be thine, yea thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.

Just as I am, of that free love The breadth, length, depth and height to prove, Here for a season then above, O Lamb of God, I come.

Words: Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) Music: Saffron Walden, Arthur Henry Brown (1830-1926)

22 | SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Priest Compassionate and loving God, through your Son Jesus Christ you have fed us and have reconciled your people to yourself. Following his example of fasting and prayer, may we obey you with willing hearts and serve one another in holy love. All Amen.

Priest The Lord be with you All and also with you.

Priest Grant, merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a quiet mind; through Christ our Lord, and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. All Amen.

| 23 RECESSIONAL HYMN | NEH 413

The people remain standing to sing the hymn, turning to face the as it passes to the west door

Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, in Whom this world rejoices; Who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us; And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed; And guard us through all ills in this world, till the next!

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, The Son, and Him Who reigns with Them in highest Heaven— The one eternal God, Whom earth and Heav’n adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
