BAM announces January BAMcafé Live lineup

Fri, Jan 2 at 9pm Sean Schulich’s Phunky Phloot and Alpha Mosaic Jazz flutist Sean Schulich has played with artists including the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Bernie Worrell, and Meshell Ndegeocello; venues and festivals including Jazz Fest in New Orleans and The Mint in ; and at B.B. King's, Webster Hall, and the Bowery Ballroom in . Schulich’s uniquely soulful playing will be accentuated at BAMcafé Live by his formidable fusion ensemble, Alpha Mosaic.

Sat, Jan 3 at 9pm Judd Nielsen New York City-based pianist and organist Judd Nielsen—a master of 70s jazz and funk—has worked with artists including Trombone Shorty, Melvin Sparks, and Big Daddy Kane. At BAMcafé Live he performs smooth, soulful songs from his latest album, Blossom Showers, with and jazz guitarist Solomon Hicks and drummer Austin Williamson.

Fri, Jan 9 at 9pm California King California King, a trio of alt-rockers, has released two albums. Its indie sound has garnered shows at both the Northside and Urb Alt festivals. Featuring vocalist and guitarist Mike Mills, bassist Yohann Potico, and drummer Howard Alper, the band performs songs that are both thought-provoking and musically captivating. Mills’ emotion-laden vocals paint a detailed lyrical picture, melding seamlessly with Potico's and Alper’s dance and hip-hop stylings, forming deep rock grooves.

Sat, Jan 10 at 9pm Rhythm Republik with special guest Jahstix Rhythm Republik mixes old-school funk, socially-conscious lyrics, and rousing chants in a blend designed to get audiences both moving and thinking. Having shared the stage with legends like Brian Jackson, Steel Pulse, and The Last Poets, as well as helped raise funds for global causes, Rhythm Republik creates electrifying grooves with a mission. Reggae singer and guitarist Jahstix will open the BAMcafé Live show with his signature blend of rasta-rock.

Fri, Jan 23 at 10pm Erik Deutsch and the Jazz Outlaws Erik Deutsch has performed and recorded with , , Shooter Jennings, Alice Smith, and Rosanne Cash, to name a few. He released his psychedelic soul jazz record Demonio Teclado in 2012, and his forthcoming record, Outlaw Jazz, will be released in February.

Sat, Jan 24 at 9:30pm Steve Sullivan and the Board of Directors Steve Sullivan and the Board of Directors make unabashedly fun, laid-back garage rock that harkens the raw, stripped-down sounds of 1970s power pop. The six-piece outfit performs bluesy originals with a hint of swirling psych-rock. Their covers include songs by legends including Bill Withers and The Rolling Stones.

Fri, Jan 30 at 9pm Emilio Teubal Ensemble New York-based Argentinean pianist and composer Emilio Teubal has released three albums as a bandleader. His latest, Música Para un Dragon Dormido, has been hailed by critics and listeners alike, and features Moto Fukushima, Sam Sadigursky, John Hadfield, Erik Friedlander, and Satoshi Takeishi. Teubal’s latest project, Emilio Teubal Ensemble, is a seven-piece ensemble that features some of New York City's most prominent jazz musicians.

Sat, Jan 31 at 9pm Lachi Lachi is a soul-pop artist who mixes empowering lyrics with soaring vocals and unapologetic grit. A performer, author, and arts activist, she is an Independent Music Awards nominee who has played major festivals around the country, and opened for Patti Labelle and Questlove. Lachi has been featured on CBS Radio, MTV.com, the E! and Style Networks, and Oprah Radio.

General Information BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, BAM Rose Cinemas, and BAMcafé are located in the Peter Jay Sharp building at 30 Lafayette Avenue (between St Felix Street and Ashland Place) in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn. BAM Harvey Theater is located two blocks from the main building at 651 Fulton Street (between Ashland and Rockwell Places). Both locations house Greenlight Bookstore at BAM kiosks. BAM Fisher, located at 321 Ashland Place, is the newest addition to the BAM campus and houses the Judith and Alan Fishman Space and Rita K. Hillman Studio. BAM Rose Cinemas is Brooklyn’s only movie house dedicated to first-run independent and foreign film and repertory programming. BAMcafé, operated by Great Performances, offers a dinner menu prior to BAM Howard Gilman Opera House evening performances. BAMcafé also features an eclectic mix of live music for BAMcafé Live on Friday and Saturday nights with a bar menu available starting at 6pm.
