Kirschbaum and Laura R.H. Biewick Introduction This report provides an overview of the geologic setting, distribution, and quality of coal deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Colorado Plateau contains more than 40 individual coal fi elds within the four-State region of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah (fi g. 1). This chapter summarizes data for 47 coal fi elds of the Colorado Plateau and provides basic information on the location, general geology, coal resources and quality, and what we consider the most useful references for these areas. Each summary is essentially an annotated bibliography of the coal fi eld. The coal fi elds can be accessed individually by scrolling through the text, by selecting from the bookmarks provided in Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher, or by clicking on the appropriate heading in the chapter B table of contents. The summaries can also be accessed from the Colorado Plateau ArcView project, which resides on both disc 1 and disc 2 of this 2-CD-ROM set (the ArcView project on disc 1 may be queried by means of ArcView Data Publisher; the ArcView project on disc 2 provides for full

Early Play Development and Reported Results One of Encana’s wells, the Lybrook #H36-2307 (located in se se 32-23n- 7w, Figure 1) was reported flowing at a rate of 838 mcfgpd (natural gas) and 786 bopd (oil) from a lateral leg in the Gallup sandstone formation. Daily production through the initial 30-day period was around 440 barrels of oil per day. This well is a horizontal well with a 4,100 foot lateral section.

Total damage repair costs from an engineering judg- ment prediction are provided. Spectral Matrix Method calcula- tions are now in progress. Also included are general safety recommendations. A summary of predictions follows: Structural Response Damaging motions are probable in the region inside 25 kilometers. Structural hazards exist in Grand Valley, at the Anvil Points Research Station, and at various small ranches out to a distance of 14 ki lometers from Ground Zero (GZ) . The area is much more densely populated than would appear from initial project informa- tion. Earth Structure Hazards Rockfall and hazards to slope stability create major problems.

WESTWOOD ON FEBRUARY I7, I889, RICHARD DALLIN WESTWOOD, twenty-six years old, left Mount Pleasant, Utah, bound for Moab, a settlement in the far eastern edge of what was then Emery County. He was looking for a piece of farm land on which he could build a home for himself, his young wife, Martha, and their baby daughter, Mary Ellen. It was just ten years since the first permanent settlers had moved into "Spanish Valley" by the Grand (Colorado) River in the southeast part of the territory. Manos, metates, arrow­ heads, stone weapons, and ancient bean, maize, and squash seeds have all been frequent finds throughout the area, attesting to early Indian cultures. The Spanish Trail through here was used first by the early Span­ iards as a route from New Mexico to California.^ Later it was used in part by Mexican traders, trappers, prospectors, and various Indian tribes. The first party traveling the entire trail apparently was led by WiUiam WolfskiU and George C. Young in the winter of 1830-31.2 In 1854 Brigham Young sent a small expedition under William D. Huntington to trade with the Navajos and explore the southern part of Utah territory. They used this route. The next year Young called forty- one men under Alfred N.

Humphrey, Department Head Department of Geology and Geological Engineering ii ABSTRACT The basal Niobrara sandstone in the eastern San Juan Basin is an important oil producing reservoir. The West Puerto Chiquito (WPC) Field has produced approximately 18 million barrels of oil from Fort Hays age equivalent sandstones. Most of the Late Cretaceous oil producing stratigraphic traps that have been identified in the Rocky Mountain region are associated with unconformities. The boundary between the Carlile Shale and Niobrara is a well- known regional unconformity that has been extensively studied on the west side of the San Juan Basin in association with large oil fields such as Bisti and Horseshoe. A study of well log correlation, outcrop, core and source rock analysis was conducted in order to identify the resource potential of the Niobrara sandstone in the eastern part of the San Juan Basin. The Niobrara Sandstone is encased within 2000 feet of organic-rich, thermally mature Mancos source rock. Core analyses, including petrographic thin sections help to characterize the porosity and permeability of this tight reservoir. Surface lineaments were studied in order to identify reservoir connectivity.

The fauna of the Kaiparowits Basin is represented by 7 species of salamander, toads, mnphihians (1 5 and 1 tree frog), 29 species of reptiles (1 turtle, 16 lizards, and 12 snakes), 183 species of birds (plus 2 hypothetical), and 74 species of mammals. Geographic distribution of the various species within the basin are discussed. Birds are categorized according to their population and seasonal status.

    !People of the Book Cliffs The Book Cliffs rise as if startled out of the Mancos Shale desert. This bright edge stretches east-west, two hundred miles between Grand Junction, Colorado and Price, Utah, stair-stepping four thousand feet up from the desert to a summit that’s cloaked in aspen, fir, and spruce. Erosion has dissected the cliffs into isolated canyons, carved by intermittent streams that all flow south toward the Colorado River. Even so, the cliffs and canyons are considered part of the !Uinta Basin because their rock layers, like the Green River Formation, are tilted north. Pockets of true wilderness still exist within the Book Cliffs. Black bear, bighorn, mule deer, and cougars are at home in these canyons. People have lived in and moved through this country for thousands of years−the Utes most recently, the Fremont before them, and the enigmatic Barrier !Canyon people with their alien pictographs staring at us as if from outer space. Wolf Bennett and his daughters came here from Colorado to see the pictographs and to clamber around the rocks of Sego Canyon. Wolf’s spent his life as a guide and values what these canyons !offer his family−opportunities to discover, a diversion from cityscapes, a sense of wonder. A mile down canyon, Bob Holloway and his two adopted children were watering fruit trees at the ranch he’d recently bought. The roof needed work. Bob and his wife wanted to get out of the rat race in Green River. That town’s population of 900 might swell if a proposed oil refinery and nuclear power plant are built.

This paper is a preliminary statement of the results of work in the coal fields of northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah during the summer of 1907.° In 1905 a preliminary reconnaissance of the Yampa coal field, of Routt County, was made.6 In the summer of 1906 similar work was extended southwestward from the Yampa field, and the Danforth Hills and Grand Hogback coal fields, of Routt, Rio Blanco, and Garfield counties, were mapped.6 The work of the past season was a continuation of that of the two preceding years, extend­ ing the area studied westward through Routt and Rio Blanco counties, Colo., and including some less extensive coal fields in^Uinta County, Utah, and southern Uinta County, Wyo. ACCESSIBILITY. At present these fields have no_ railroad connection, although surveys for several projected lines have recently been made into the region. Of these lines, the Denver, Northwestern and Pacific Railway ("Moffat road") is under active construction in .the eastern part of Routt County and bids fair to push westward not far from the lower Yampa and White River fields in the near future. An extension of the Uintah Railway has been surveyed from Dragon to Vernal, Utah, crossing the projected route of the "MofFat road" near Green River. The Union Pacific Railroad has made a preliminary survey south from Rawlins, Wyo., intending to reach the Yampa Valley in the vicinity of Craig. a A more complete report combining the results of the preceding season's work in the Danforth Hills and Grand Hogback fields with those of last season's work as outlined here, together with detailed contour maps of the whole area, will be published as a (separate bulletin of the Survey.
