July 1968 Volume One Number Seven the message of the Masters O Beloved Sawan Thy sight, O Sawan, gives light to the eyes, Thy love takes the soul through space immeasurable, Thy memory, O Beloved, remains fresh with us all the time. The entire nature, with Suns and Moons, is envious of Thee. All the flowers and buds and the cypresses tall rival Thee, in vain. Beautiful is Thy form, revishingly enchanting is Thy sweet smile. Thou art a sure guide to all on the Path of Salvation, Thou art a fountainhead of bubbling love for all and sundry; The words of wisdom, chase away pain and affliction, Those who take Thy name get absorbed in ecstasy divine. Thou art an endless ocean of beauty and grace, O Master. Thou art an ever-expanding flood of Light, O Lord Thou art Light embodied for all in the sea of life, Thou art the lighted Lamp unto our feet, here and hereafter. Thou art a living embodiment of compassion, beauty and grace. Thy light steps are faster than sound and light Even the grandeur itself bows low before Thee. The Grace of Thy face puts the blooming rose garden to shame, A Beloved with all humility, Thou hast a dignity that is life inspiring Every act of Thine enlivens the soul and enriches the heart. The Master’s message Dear Ones, I convey my love and best wishes to each one of you on this auspicious birth anniversary of Hazur Maharaj Baba Sawan Singh Ji. You are fortunate to have man-body which is the highest in all creation. I wish you all to live a life worth living—the life in the Spirit. Master used to say that there is little use of talking-about or writing about it— words without actions are empty and futile. One should learn to live such a life in true sense of the word. It is not what we say that matters. It is what we are and how we live. Let the words and thoughts we have read so far become a part and parcel of our whole being. He enjoined we should live up to them from day to day. What we have lived in our lives goes along with us—an illiterate man cannot become learned after death. We should be constantly on the watch we do not stumble and fall when obstacles come on the way. Even if you fall, never allow such falls to throw you off balance in any way. Pick yourself up and continue on your way with patience and perseverance with full trust in the Master working over your head. Kabir says: “Anyone who falls while walking is not to blame; but if he remains fallen, a long journey is still ahead of him.” Make up your mind whether you would like to con form to the dictates of our mind or to the commandments of the Master. The choice lies in your own hands. You are free to choose; no one else can make the choice for you. The world may condemn you, who choose the Master’s way. You need not worry because you have taken up the right way. 2 Master is ‘Word-made-flesh’. He is Light, Life and Love. If you live and move in him, He will be your very life and give you more Light and Love. The Word is the ‘Bread of Life’ and ‘Water of Life’. When you are hungry and thirsty, enter into the inner stillness and receive amply of these, which give the life eternal. This is within you, none is barred from it. Forget the past, forget the future—relax fully. Be still, be alone to your own self, giving yourself wholly to the Master—Light and Love will be generated through you to all the world over. Every day and every time convey thanks to the Master—the God in him, who has put you on the way— and for all other gifts you enjoy. In this way you will be aware of the Master all the time. Without him you can do nothing and with him you can do all things. The more time you will spend with the Master, your every-day life will become smoother. Kabir says: “If the initiate lives this side of the ocean and Master lives across, direct your surat (attention) to him. You will receive all blessings because the Master is ‘Word-made-flesh’ and is everywhere.” When one is initiated the Master-power resides in him and does not leave him till the end of the world. Kabir says: “Always be conscious of the Master power within you and live up to his commandments. You have nothing to fear in the three worlds.” All love, 3 THE MASTER SPEAKS Gurbhakti – a lesson in love HIS day we have gathered together we spend together in this congregational T in the loving memory of the Godman service to the memory of the Godman (Hazur Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj) who will be amply rewarded and should, there revived the age-old perennial science fore, be considered a great blessing. which we had forgotten. The Five Dacoits The Five Perversions of Mind From The Path of the Masters by Julian Johnson Sant Kirpal Singh Ji, Hazur Baba Sawan Singh Ji, and others We are constantly beset by five foes - passion, anger, greed, worldly attachments, and vanity. All these must be mastered, brought under control. You can never do that entirely until you have the aid of the Guru and are in harmonic relations with the Sound Current. But you can begin now, and every effort will be a step on the way. (Baba Sawan Singh, Spiritual Gems, 339) Swami Ji has said that we should not hesitate to go all out to still the mind. We do not fully grasp that the mind takes everyone to his doom. It is like a thousand-faced snake, which is constantly with each being; it has a thousand different ways of destroying the person. The rich with riches, the poor with poverty, the orator with his fine speeches – it takes the weakness in each and plays upon it to destroy him. • The Ascent Within Esoteric Instructions by Swami Ji Maharaj & Baba Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj
The Ascent Within Esoteric Instructions by Swami Ji Maharaj & Baba Sawan Singh Ji Maharaj No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him. (Saint Paul) Every region and everything is utterly beyond words. What beauty and glory! How can I describe them? There is nothing here on earth to convey the idea. I am helpless. (Swami Ji) Introduction In the Hidayatnama, Swami Ji extols the spiritual practice of Surat Shabd Yoga, meditation on the inner Light and Sound under the guidance of a genuine Sant Sat Guru. Baba Sawan Singh, in commenting on a poem by Kabir, describes the inner journey in similar detail. Both selections are included within these pages. Also included are excerpts from the book The Enchanted Land written by professor and researcher David Lane who provides a nice description of Surat Shabd Yoga and a commentary on Swami Ji’s Hidayatname, which some may find interesting. The following is Lane’s description of Surat Shabd Yoga: Unlike other yogic disciplines in India, such as kundalini, Surat Shabd Yoga does not advocate breath control (pranayama) or a series of physical postures (asanas/mudras) as part of its practice. Rather, it is concerned with withdrawing consciousness from the nine apertures of the body (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, genitals, and alimentary canal) and transcending the corporeal frame and its limitations altogether. This is accomplished by attaching the mind's attention to an inner light and sound which is believed to be radiating behind the proverbial "tenth door" (the "third eye" of the Hindus), anatomically located behind and slightly above the physical eyes.

  • Radhasoami's Version of Science and The
THE GOD EXPERIMENT: RADHASOAMI’S VERSION OF SCIENCE AND THE RHETORIC OF GURU SUCCESSION David Christopher Lane Introduction The Radhasoami tradition has almost since its formal inception in 1861 in Agra, India, attempted to explain its practices and teachings as a higher form of spiritual science. But in so doing, Radhasoami has developed its own unique understanding of how science operates which at times is at odds with more conventional definitions of how to systematically study nature. In this article we will examine the history of Radhasoami’s ver- sion of science and how and why it has attempted to legitimize its religious practices in light of the latest discoveries in astronomy, phys- ics, biology, and psychology. We will also be particularly interested in exploring how and why Radhasoami’s defintional use of science often contradicts a more conventional scientific worldview. Radhasoami is the all-purpose name given to a system of teachings first propounded by Shiv Dayal Singh, a local guru in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, who lived from 1818 to 1878. Shiv Dayal Singh, other wise more honorifically known as Soamiji Maharaji, was raised in the teachings of Sant Mat, as propounded by the relatively obscure Hathras guru, Tulsi Sahib. What precisely Shiv Dayal taught during his lifetime is still disputed till this day and has led to several varying schisms in the movement. However, all branches which claim a gene- alogical connection to Shiv Dayal Singh agree that he taught surat shabd yoga and emphasized a strict lacto-vegetarian diet. After his death in 1878, several disciples worked as gurus and in turn this led to even more branches over time.
