Professional Affiliations: o Colorado Community Colleges System o Colorado Commission on Higher Education o Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Occupational Outlook Handbook -- Carpenters OR Construction Laborer or Helper Work Environment and Physical Demands Occupations often can be performed by those with disabilities when provided with appropriate adaptations.  Work both indoors and outdoors - may work in muddy, dusty, or noisy conditions.  Work involves standing, climbing, crouching, and stooping.  Medium physical demands - includes frequent lifting or carrying from 10 to 25 pounds; occasionally from 20 to 50 pounds.  Frequent use of arms, hands, and fingers for reaching and handling materials and tools.  Must have use of feet, legs, hands, and arms to climb and/or balance on ladders and scaffolding  Occasional ability to see things far away, to use color vision, to focus sharply, and to use field of vision is needed.  Ability to focus on close things and to use depth perception is needed.  Hazards include falls, cuts or amputation from sharp tools and power equipment with moving mechanical parts, and exposure to the sun and to dust and chemical fumes. Some specialties frequently risk injury.  Workers usually wear protective clothing and devices, such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, and safety shoes.  Work is seasonal and workers often move to job sites in the state or region.  Overtime may occur during peak construction season.  Tools used include hand and power saws, hammers, screwdrivers, and sanders.
