21 September 2018 Dear Bridge House families

Term three reports While it is always a daunting task to carry out the final check and sign-off of a term’s academic reports, it is also a wonderfully uplifting experience. With very few exceptions, comments and results are positive, constructive and optimistic. I see numerous reports from other schools almost weekly. The thoroughness, attention to detail and sense that our teachers know their students and care about their progress in a Bridge House report, are all very pleasing to see. Please do take the time to engage constructively with your sons and daughters about the penultimate report of the year. Please see disappointments not as failures or personal affronts, but as opportunities to heed advice, reflect honestly and try harder or differently next time. Please also take the time, if you can, to attend the parent-teacher meetings on Tuesday 16 October. For distant boarder parents please do feel that you can contact the school to consult your son or daughter’s teachers.

A good place to be I write this to you the morning after a wonderful Benefit concert to assist our past pupil, Odwa Bongo to raise fees for the completion of his Music studies. It was an evening of memorable cameo moments before an almost-full theatre, where the sense of community and generosity of spirit in our Bridge House family were very evident. I write this just a week after an astonishingly professional Junior Primary major production, packed with colour, melody, movement and sheer magic. I write this just a week after 37 inspiring, insightful Student Leadership Council election speeches (37 equals half of the grade willing to stand to represent the student voice!). I write this after two days of student voting, with close to 90% of all college students registering votes, and the joyous reception of the announcement of our Student Leadership Council for 2019. I write these two days before a delegation of four represent South Africa, Bridge House and their families at the International Conference at in Ottawa, Canada. (In addition, I write that thought almost a year to the day in which we co-hosted about 1250 delegates from around the world at our own Round Square International Conference!) This is indeed a good place to be.

SLC 2019 Congratulations to the following students on their election to the SLC for 2019: IDEALS Portfolio holders: Sebastian Breitenbach, James Clark, Jessica Dendy-Young, Lizalise Luxande, Ross Millard, Joshua Oates, Matthew Pols and Adam Sendzul.

House leaders: Alexandria: Amy Davids and Grace Dicey Helios: Silchy Almeida and Courtney Roux Olympia: Soqhama Mpontsane and Tyler Ruiters Student Heads of Boarding: Bellegam (boys): Silchy Almeida Waterfall (girls): Refiloe Msibi

Start of Term 4 You will be aware that all students and staff return for the fourth term on Monday 8 October, with boarders returning late afternoon/early evening of Sunday 7 October. We will go straight to homerooms that Monday morning. On Tuesday 9 October, the normal assessment period will be replaced with an opening school assembly for the term. The school day on Tuesday will start with homeroom at 08.00, followed by the assembly in the theatre.

Two major events of the year in the first week, and a special appeal The first week of the last term of our year sees two of our biggest moments in the Bridge House calendar: Senior Awards (and the 2019 SLC induction) on Thursday 11 October, and an emotional Matric Valedictory the following morning. Times and details for both events have been published under separate cover, and will be repeated at the start of the new term.

The school is now bigger than it has ever been before. There are over 80 matrics in this Class of 2018, and the theatre will no doubt be filled to capacity – if not beyond that – for both occasions. We did consider using the gym, but atmospherics, tricky logistics, huge expenses for the kind of sound and lighting required for these auspicious occasions -- and a good dose of tradition, I think -- have convinced us, for 2018 at least, to hold both celebrations in the theatre as usual. We are very loath to exclude junior grades from what should be an inspirational and aspirational spectacle. There will be seating inside the theatre for the maximum allowed audience. We will provide limited spill-over seating on the theatre verandah (school side) for latecomers. I must therefore appeal to parents that we restrict parental attendance to Grade 12 parents and SLC parents only. Please cooperate with us on this. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Borehole update The great news is that the first borehole, sponsored by PA fund-raising, struck water about 80 metres down, adjacent to Huguenot House. While final testing and analysis is currently under way, the yield is strong, seems sustainable, and the quality of the water is encouragingly good. Many thanks to the PA, the Trust and the Board for supporting this project, which is certain to save the school copious amounts of water (and money) in the years to come.

Uniform shop The school’s executive (EXCO), Board and Trust are pleased to inform you that, as of 1 October, the running of the school uniform shop will be outsourced. The decision follows a thorough process of going out to tender, deliberations and negotiations. We are absolutely confident that the shop will continue to provide excellent service, and its outsourcing does allow school personnel to focus on core business. Mr Stuart Downie is the successful bidder and we look forward to Stuart’s innovative, customer-centred management in the years to come.

Farewells The staff has bid some sad farewells to three of our colleagues this week, and will do so in writing more fully in the 2018 magazine. We wish Mrs Cath Michell (Educational Psychologist), Mrs Rose Cockcroft (Learning Support Specialist) and Mr Ruben Jefthas (IT Technician) nothing but the very

best as they head off into new territory and begin new chapters. Their contributions have been selfless and invaluable, as has been their growth in their time here. News of replacements or redefinition of posts will be published in due course. We welcome Mr Kobus Roux to the IT Network Manager’s position, replacing Mr Cameron Malcolm who seized a wonderful growth opportunity in the private sector, commencing on 1 September. We also said goodbye to a wonderfully energetic bunch of University student teachers, who leave us after a whole term at Bridge House. They have been a real credit to the US Faculty of Education, throwing themselves confidently and wholeheartedly into all aspects of the school’s life. We wish them everything of the best in their teaching careers.

Once again, I record my personal thanks to the school’s Trust, Board, PA, EXCO, Bridge House staff in whatever capacity, our parents and our students for what they bring to this very special place. I wish all a restful if short break, and safe travel if you do manage to get away. To our Jewish families, “Chag sameach” for Sukkot and “Happy Shemini Azeret” during this break; to all of us, enjoy Heritage Day and reflect on what it means!

Kind regards

Mike Russell Head, Bridge House School
