  • John Ballingall (1824-1912): Fife’S Oldest Agriculturalist by His Distant First Cousin, Michael T
John Ballingall (1824-1912): Fife’s Oldest Agriculturalist By His Distant First Cousin, Michael T. Tracy The day after the death of John Ballingall the Dundee Courier Newspaper wrote: “Dunbog is mourning today the loss of its grand old man – honest John – who had gone out and in amongst its people for 80 years, and whose warm heart and kindly disposition was only known to those with whom he came most closely in contact. Mr. Ballingall was born a farmer, having inherited the farming instinct from a worthy sire, and having devoted all his life to the art of making two blades of grass grow where only one grew before. For many years his acreage on the farms of Dunbog, Higham, and Rumeldry exceeded 1,500, and at the same period he managed the adjoining farms of Glenduckie, Aytoun, and Balmeadie, another 1,000 acres, for Mr. Carnegie, and the work seemed to lie lightly on his shoulders. It might be truly said of him that he never touched any land without adorning it so far as high cultivation and fertility were concerned. He was an outstanding example of one who knew how to bring crop and stock to perfection. His worth and experience were recognized by his holding the position of director of the H. [Highland] and A. [Agricultural] Society for many years. For several generations he was the life and soul of his district, and one of the kindest and best friends and neighbours that one could conceive. Possessed of a ready wit and repartee he made himself agreeable, and even fascinating to young and old, and evinced great interest in the welfare and happiness of others.

  • The Place Names of Fife and Kinross
1 n tllif G i* THE PLACE NAMES OF FIFE AND KINROSS THE PLACE NAMES OF FIFE AND KINROSS BY W. J. N. LIDDALL M.A. EDIN., B.A. LOND. , ADVOCATE EDINBURGH WILLIAM GREEN & SONS 1896 TO M. J. G. MACKAY, M.A., LL.D., Advocate, SHERIFF OF FIFE AND KINROSS, AN ACCOMPLISHED WORKER IN THE FIELD OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH. INTRODUCTION The following work has two objects in view. The first is to enable the general reader to acquire a knowledge of the significance of the names of places around him—names he is daily using. A greater interest is popularly taken in this subject than is apt to be supposed, and excellent proof of this is afforded by the existence of the strange corruptions which place names are wont to assume by reason of the effort on the part of people to give some meaning to words otherwise unintelligible to them. The other object of the book is to place the results of the writer's research at the disposal of students of the same subject, or of those sciences, such as history, to which it may be auxiliary. The indisputable conclusion to which an analysis of Fife—and Kinross for this purpose may be considered a Fife— part of place names conducts is, that the nomen- clature of the county may be described as purely of Goidelic origin, that is to say, as belonging to the Irish branch of the Celtic dialects, and as perfectly free from Brythonic admixture. There are a few names of Teutonic origin, but these are, so to speak, accidental to the topography of Fife.

Creich Flisk and Kilmany Church of Scotland Scottish Charity No. SC001097 Locum’s Letter Dear Friends I am enjoying getting to know the linked parish of Monimail, Flisk, Creich and Kilmany, a lovely part of Fife which, until now, I knew very little about. My contract is for one day a week in addition to the Sunday services and I hope to get to know you better and to be able to help where I can in an unsettling time. Like many parishes in Scotland today, you are involved in vacancy procedures at a time when numbers coming forward to serve the Church are at an all time low. I have been involved in ministry for 46 years, the first 20 years as parish minister in Dunfermline, followed by 2 years as Deputy Secretary in the Committee of Education for the Ministry, with specific responsibility for the recruitment and training of candidates. These were exciting times, with numbers training for ministry the highest they had been for years. In the late 1980s I was working with about 200 students in the four colleges, while today numbers are in the low 60s.

DESCRIPTION (in text form) DESCRIPTION OF SURVEY OF SCOTTISH WITCHCRAFT DATABASE INTRODUCTION The following document is a description and guide to the layout and design of the ‘Survey of Scottish Witchcraft’ database. It is divided into two sections. In the first section appropriate terms and concepts are defined in order to afford accuracy and precision in the discussion of complicated relationships encompassed by the database. This includes relationships between accused witches and their accusers, different accused witches, people and prosecutorial processes, and cultural elements of witchcraft belief and the processes through which they were documented. The second section is a general description of how the database is organised. Please see the document ‘Description of Database Fields’ for a full discussion of every field in the database, including its meaning, use and relationships to other fields and/or tables.
