As on cultural art area important dependent castes are Dakkali and Pabbada. The Dibbida copper plate inscription of Mastya Arjuna, dated S.119l (A.D. 1269) refers to a tank intended for the use of Antyas (Antyajataka) while delineating the boundaries of the gifted village. This clearly suggests that those who belonged to the lower status of society were not allowed to use the common tanks of the village and that separate tanks were excavated for their use. Chandalas were often expected to render service without any special remuneration, a practice which is known as Vetti (free labour). However, some land was allotted for their subsistence as evident from the term Chandala Kshetramu mentioned in the Chevuru plates of Eastern Chalukya Amma.     PROFILE OF ANANTAPUR DISTRICT The effective functioning of any institution largely depends on the socio-economic environment in which it is functioning. It is especially true in case of institutions which are functioning for the development of rural areas. Hence, an attempt is made here to present a socio­ economic profile of Anantapur district, which happens to be one of the areas of operation of DRDA under study. Profile of Anantapur District Anantapur offers some vivid glimpses of the pre-historic past. It is generally held that the place got its name from 'Anantasagaram', a big tank, which means ‘Endless Ocean’. The villages of Anantasagaram and Bukkarayasamudram were constructed by Chilkkavodeya, the Minister of Bukka-I, a Vijayanagar ruler. Some authorities assert that Anantasagaram was named after Bukka's queen, while some contend that it must have been known after Anantarasa Chikkavodeya himself, as Bukka had no queen by that name. Anantapur is familiarly known as ‘Hande Anantapuram’. 'Hande' means chief of the Vijayanagar period. Anantapur and a few other places were gifted by the Vijayanagar rulers to Hanumappa Naidu of the Hande family. The place subsequently came under the Qutub Shahis, Mughals, and the Nawabs of Kadapa, although the Hande chiefs continued to rule as their subordinates. It was occupied by the Palegar of Bellary during the time of Ramappa but was eventually won back by 136 his son, Siddappa. Morari Rao Ghorpade attacked Anantapur in 1757. Though the army resisted for some time, Siddappa ultimately bought off the enemy for Rs.50, 000. Anantapur then came into the possession of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

    International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) ISSN (Online): 2319-7064 Index Copernicus Value (2013): 6.14 | Impact Factor (2014): 5.611 Environmental Degradation and Landscape Management of the Nallamalai and Erramalai Hills of the Rayalaseema Region, Andhra Pradesh, India Using Geospatial Technology Kommu Somanna1, Mendu Sambasiva Rao2 1,2Dept. of Geography, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapuramu, Andhra Pradesh, India Abstract: The Nallamalai and Erramalai hills of the Rayalaseema region posses rich biotic and mineral resources. They are formed of structural hills and cuesta hills enclosing the Kadapa and Kunderu valleys. They are also formed of Proterozoic formations consisting of shales, dolomite, limestone and quartzite. The Nallamalai hills raised to a height of about 600 to 900 meters above MSL and are covered with thick dry deciduous forests. The Erramalai hills range in height from 300 to 600 meters above MSL and are covered with scrubs and shrubs. The IRS IB Geo-coded data on scale 1:50,000 and Survey of India topographic sheets on scale 1:50,000 are used to map the ecologically disturbed zones in Nallamalai hills and land degradation due to over exploitation of mineral resources of the Erramalai hills. The intensity of soil removal, Sediment Yield Index and Erosion Index are worked out at sub-basin level and the environmental degraded zones are delineated. Based on the intensity of ecological and environmental degradation a few suggestions are made for better landscape management of the Erramalai and Nallamalai hills.
