THE UK has one of the poorest savings rates of all developed economies, resulting in a growing ‘savings gap’ – the difference between what people need to save for retirement or long term future, and what they actually are saving. At Simple Solutions we believe this is understandable and is a direct result of misguided government policy, over regulation of savings and investment and under regulation of borrowing. People are encouraged to borrow, and discouraged to save, primarily because of over complicated products that are caught in the net of regulatory disclaimers and uncertainty. We firmly believe that, rather than regulate the activity of thousands of advisers, the regulator should instead pay much closer attention to the products in the first place. For the past three years Simple Solutions has helped campaign for change. Last December I had a meeting with David Mowat, MP for Warrington South. During the meeting he asked me what I would recommend to the chancellor if I were advising on pensions. I told David that I would scrap the requirement to purchase an annuity. I must admit I never thought that would actually happen! People need to take responsibility for their own money, their own futures. This has started to happen since the March budget.

We have long wished for a time when an enlightened chancellor could, with the stroke of his pen, simplify the savings market. Allowing people to access their own money at retirement is in the UK, revolutionary. What it signals is a dispensation of red tape and unnecessary bureaucracy that has put people off pension investment as the primary way of saving for retirement. We believe that the recent changes to ISA’s and pensions announced in the 2014 budget are of great significance and will encourage people to make better provision for their long-term financial well- being. Hopefully it is the end of the nanny state regulation. Our goal based technology will allow clients to set goals not only for their retirement, but any future event, such as savings for university fees for example, and will track that progress against that goal daily. And if they are falling short, a client can with one click, close the gap by putting money in. We call this process Impulse Save. It is the antitheses of the impulse borrowing of the payday loan movement that is belatedly getting attention. Without sounding condescending, people have to be shown how to save effectively. Personal finance should be taught in schools and colleges. People should understand what the implications are if they only pay the minimum balance on a credit card for example. Once people are shown the right way to save, they should be fine. But as long as it is easier to borrow the money than it is to save it, then the payday loan people will flourish!
