3 Emergency Situation Report ESR (5) 5 November 2010

Source: BNPB as per 2 November 2010 09.00 Situation Analysis

 Despite earlier predictions by scientists that dozens of big explosions that followed Merapi's initial Oct. 26 blast would ease pressure building up behind a magma dome, eruptions appeared to be intensifying.  The eruption, which threw volcanic material, more than seven kilometers into the atmosphere, was five times stronger than the initial eruption on Oct. 26 that killed 42 people.  Towering clouds of ash shot from the crater with a thunder-like roar on Friday morning, sending soot 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) into the air and dusting towns up to 150 miles (250 kilometers) away, sending pyroclastic flows down the mountain.  Such clouds can reach temperatures of up to 1,400 degree Fahrenheit (750 degree Celsius), while racing down the slopes at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour).  Due to the expansion of exclusion zone to 20 km radius from the summit, IDPs are being relocated and more people are being evacuated, mainly to 3 sites in Yogyakarta: Maguwohardjo Stadium, Jogja Expo Center, and University of Gadjah Mada.  Activity at the mountain forced the local authority to close down the activities in Adisucipto airport in Yogyakarta start from 06 am to 09 pm on Friday. Flights were transferred to Airport in , and Adisumarmo Airport in Solo, Central Java. Heavy ash and volcanic debris has been known to affect visibility and clog engines.  There are currently total of 18 volcanoes on alert level two, 2 volcanoes (Mt. Ibu and Mt. Karangetang) on alert level three, and 1 (Mt. Merapi) on alert level 4.
