ROSWELL SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE 9 Adaptive Recreation The following adaptive recreation programs are designed for individuals with developmental and/or physical disabilities. Therapeutic Recreation Through our various programs and events, we focus on what is known as therapeutic recreation which extends beyond short-lived activities and works to stimulate physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure development through consistent activi- ty so that individuals may participate fully and independently in chosen life pursuits. Recreational therapy, provided by qualified professionals known as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS), is extremely individualized to each person by the participant’s interests and lifestyle.

Support and Volunteer Opportunities Adaptive Recreation Support Scholorships are available for those who need finan- cial assistance in order to participate in our adaptive programs. If you would like an application please email us at [email protected].

Adaptive Giving Campaign We continue to partner with the Friends of the Roswell Parks group to provide recreational opportunities to all members of our community through the Adaptive Giving Campaign (AGC). One $16 donation will allow an individual to participate in our adaptive social program for an entire year. Unique Therapy Services, Llc (UTS) Unique Therapy Services, LLC provides adaptive aquatics, specialized swim instruction, or individual aquatic physical therapy for children and adults with special needs. Licensed physical therapists and well- trained, experienced staff will guide individuals who need 1-on-1 instruction to improve their function, learn to swim, and be safe around the water. UTS utilizes many therapeutic techniques and specialized equipment to facilitate skill development. Adaptive Cultural Arts Art This art program enables each participant to be creative and innovative, working on three different mediums over the course of six weeks. Students will explore clay, painting, and multimedia art projects. Ages 12+

Clay Students will have sensorial fun experimenting with clay, creating lasting pieces, and engaging within a space that supports each person. Class will focus on discovering hidden strengths, special gifts, and building self-esteem. While each person’s needs and requirements are unique, together we’ll uncover what works best for each individual. Ages 18+

The facility serves citizens ages 25+ and children/adults with disabilities. A variety of Swim Pass options and aquatic fitness classes are available throughout the year, as well as lap swimming/walk- ing. Adult Indoor Swim Team/Adult Fitness Swimming This is a fitness program for Roswell Rapids Adult Swim Team participants. Coaches will group swim- mers by level of ability (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). Current or former competitive swimming experience is not required. The goal is to prepare for the upcoming summer season for both recreation and competitive swimmers.

Aqua Class Descriptions AI CHI A simple water exercise and relaxation class using a com- bination of deep breathing and slow, broad movements of arms, legs, and torso in flowing patterns. Beneficial for balance improvement and pain management.

Aqua Aerobics A faster-paced cardio workout that uses the resis- tance of water to add intensity and enhance strength. Noodles or handheld weights may also be used to develop muscle and core strength, joint range of motion, balance, and coordination.

Aqua Balance And Flex Low-impact core-based pilates and yoga aquatic exercises to improve abdominal and back strength, dynamic balance, flexibility, and posture. This class is great for those looking for easy to moderate intensity.

Aqua Fit A cardio-based workout that uses the resistance of water, hand buoys, and noodles to build cardio endurance and muscular strength. It’s the optimal mix of cardio, strength, and core training.

Aqua Fusion A challenging and exhilarating cardio workout with body toning. Water shoes are recommended.

Aqua Sculpt This low-intensity class will focus on range of motion, using aqua weights to increase core strength.

Aquatic Joint Conditioning A low-impact class designed for those with arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, Fibromyalgia, or MS. Exercises will focus on pain relief, flexibility, range of motion, and muscular strength. Water shoes are required.

ROSWELL SPRING PROGRAM GUIDE 17 Athletics Tennis Talk The four tennis courts at Hembree Park, 850 Hembree Road, have been resurfaced and look and play like championship courts again. This project was made possible through a United States Tennis Association Facility Assistance Grant. Come out, hit the ball around, and give them a try! Tennis is a sport that can be played very safely during these challenging times.

Baseball News Hembree 5 underwent con- struction during the past summer months. Improvements were made to the infield area, pitching mound, and home plate. Regrading and new sod makes this field look and play like a Field of Dreams!

Fastpitch Softball The new batting cage at Roswell Area Park Field 5 has been an awesome resource for the Roswell Crush Players to advance their skills!

On the Pitch with Roswell Soccer The Roswell Soccer Club will fund an estimated $300,000 project to install lights on the Grimes Bridge soccer fields. This project has been in development for several years. The new field lights will allow Roswell Soccer to provide more soccer opportunities to participants.

More exciting changes have happened for our travel level Roswell Santos teams. They are now participating in the Southeastern Club Cham- pions League (SCCL). Roswell Volleyball The Roswell recreational volleyball program is partnered with Phoenix Rising Volleyball Club. They provide coaches for our teams and run extra clinics for our players. Phoenix Rising does a wonderful job at promoting volleyball in the area.

Debbie Vann is one such volunteer that has been a consistent pillar of loyalty to the homes since 2004. She also happens to be a cur- rent officer of the Roswell Garden Club and was first introduced to Smith Plantation through a garden club project when she first moved to the area. She quickly became invested and recog- nized the importance of landscape to historic properties and what they can mean to people and a community.

When asked why she has stayed involved, Debbie replies, “The grounds at the homes are very important and I know visitors from all over enjoy them. The Forge at Art Center West Tucked just behind Art Center West in Leita Thompson Park, this specialized facility offers blacksmithing, knife making, and welding classes for participants ages 16 and older. The Forge is a relatively new addition to our programming and is quickly growing in popularity.

Your experience in our forging classes will be an instructional journey through tools and equip- ment, material selection, body mechanics, design considerations, forging techniques, basic heat treating principles and finishing methods. You will experience a very active class with an emphasis on hands-on learning with hammer, heat, and iron.

After receiving a B.A. from the Univer- sity of South Florida, Oros continued to take work- shops and classes to expand her skills. June currently teaches Oil and Acrylic Painting, Inspired Acrylics, Drawing and Painting Studio, and Figure Workshops at the Visual Arts Center.

Mary Booth Cabot Mary Booth Cabot’s art is a combination of talent, creativity, and love of both beauty and life. She has been, for over 38 years, known for her botanical paintings and lithographs. Since then, she has added native birds to her repertoire.

It all started in a private garden tended by her and her grandmother who supplied the sanctuary at the church they attended with bouquets of flowers each Sunday morning. Mary learned much in that garden and prides herself in carrying the fourth generation of family gardeners. Most of Mary’s inspiration comes from a lovely and private Gary Weiss garden that she tends regularly. Mary currently teaches Gary Weiss was born and raised in Decatur, Georgia watercolor and drawing classes and workshops. at a place and time when a boy and his dog felt comfortable roaming and exploring the acres of woods Evelyn Breit and streams backing up to his neighborhood. Gary Whenever possible Evelyn has raised his two sons and taught classes at Portfolio draws and paints from life Center in Atlanta, where he has served the last 13 years because it enhances sponta- as Illustration Department Chair. She is inspired by classical Follo us and contemporary figurative o social media! art and other subjects such as landscape, still life and abstraction. Her paintings have received numerous awards in national and international exhibitions. She is a Member of Excellence and a past president of the Southeastern Pastel Society and Atlanta Artists Cen- ter, where she is a weekly life drawing facilitator since @RoswellRecAndParks 2012.
