Greeting from the Office of the Mayor…

On behalf of the residents of Vallejo, the City Council and City Staff, I welcome you to our city. Vallejo is rich in culture and history, from our early days in the 1800’s to our current offerings. They include the fun and excitement of the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park, 135 acres of thrilling rides, wildlife shows, interactive animal encounters and exhibits. Our history includes Mare Island, a former naval base that will give you a scenic glimpse into our past. Visit the Mare Island Museum, Alden Park, Commandant’s Row with its majestic mansions, and the famed Mare Island Chapel with its beautiful Tiffany stained glass windows. Stroll along the promenade on Mare Island to see the beauty of our waterfront. Hike the Baylands and the open space and marvel at the varied wildlife that inhabit the Island. Mare Island is also the home of Vino Godfather, a vintner that is open to the public and hosts live music in its private garden during the spring, summer and fall. For the golfer, Vallejo offers three courses that will surely challenge your skills. Enjoy our eclectic downtown with the monthly Artwalk when galleries are open and vendors line the sidewalks. The Vallejo Naval Museum documents our rich history and its gallery shows are not to be missed. And for the Burning Man crowd, visit Obtainium Works for the latest on Steampunk news and art. Take a look at our weekly and year round downtown farmers market where fresh and organic produce is sold. Vallejo is known nationally as “America’s Most Diverse City.” We celebrate our many cultures with events throughout our City and pride ourselves with our richness of diversity. Vallejo is also a transportation hub offering ferry service aboard high speed passenger catamaran ferries to and from San Francisco. On your return visit from the City, stop by our excellent waterfront restaurants or the Mare Island Brewery for a bite to eat before heading home. All in all, you will find Vallejo an exciting place to visit. You can also find more information at VisitVallejo.com. Thank you for choosing Vallejo and hope to see you soon!

/ 9 HISTORY THE RICH HISTORY - VALLEJO & MARE ISLAND Vallejo, California is the first permanent home of California’s state government and is the 142-year home of the first and most famous naval ship building and repair facility on the west coast. A city whose rich history is intertwined deeply to both the state in which it was born and to the country it served through the Civil War two World Wars and the Cold War. In 1850, after California had been admitted to the Union as the 31st state, Mexican General Mariano Vallejo donated 156 acres of his land and promised the sum of $370,000 to create his dream of a thriving new state capital. Vallejo wished the site to be called Eureka, but his fellow citizens insisted upon naming the city in his honor. Thus Vallejo became the first permanent seat of California state government in 1852. The city’s glory was short-lived though as members of the legislature quickly became unhappy with the living and working conditions in the pioneer city. As a result, the capital moved to Sacramento just a few weeks later. But inconvenienced by floods there, the restless legislature moved back to Vallejo - and then later to Benicia - before returning to Sacramento, where the capital has remained ever since.

10 VisitVallejo.com | 800.4.VALLEJO With the establishment of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1854, Vallejo began to flourish. Mare Island grew into the largest ship construction and repair facility in the world during WWII. In the five war years, as the production rate at the shipyard increased, so too did the population of Vallejo, growing from 26,000 to nearly 100,000. Mare Island had a tremendous impact on Vallejo and the surrounding areas for almost 150 years by employing much of the city’s population as it built and repaired ships. And although the shipyard is now officially closed, Mare Island’s future is extremely bright. Over time, a combination of reuses has brought Mare Island back to the center of Vallejo’s economic activity. What is today known as the city’s multicultural diversity began much earlier in Vallejo than many other California cities. The Navy’s longtime presence at Mare Island has attracted people from all over the world to settle in Vallejo making the city the most culturally diverse in the United States.* *nerdwallet, July 2013

Lynch Canyon Open Space With habitats ranging from steep grasslands to the riparian corridor of Lynch Creek, the property is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Buckeyes, oaks and wetland meadows provide shelter for deer, fox, bobcat, waterfowl, and many raptors, including red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, and the majestic golden eagle. Also of interest are excellent specimens of native grasses and spring wildflowers such as Johnny jump-ups, California poppies, brodiaea, milkmaids, yarrow and lupine. A small reservoir provides a home to muskrats, great blue herons and endangered California red-legged frogs. Trails climb to a series of hilltops and subsequent descents into wide canyons make this a vigorous trip with around-the-compass views. Lynch Canyon is open to the public year-round, Fridays through Mondays, from 9am to 5pm. It may be closed on short notice, however, due to extreme weather or other safety concerns. www.solanolandtrust.org/lynchcanyon.aspx

56 VisitVallejo.com | 800.4.VALLEJO Hiddenbrooke Trail Part of the 550 mile Bay Area Ridge Trail, these rolling grasslands offer expansive views of San Francisco and San Pablo bays and the mountains that encircle them, from Mt. Tamalpais to Mt. Diablo. You'll gain 550 feet on short, steep climbs along this broad, exposed trail. Take this trip on cool summer mornings or late afternoons; some spots are muddy after heavy rains. www.ridgetrail.org/hiddenbrooke-trail Vallejo Benicia Buffer Trail Also part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail, take this varied trip along the ridge line greenbelt between Vallejo and Benicia. Begin on a short round-trip to a rocky ridge, and return to the rolling green lawns and shady picnic areas of Blue Rock Springs Park to follow a paved path or bike lane to the Buffer Trail. Meander through the open space easement, up and down hilly grasslands, toward Benicia State Recreation Area. www.ridgetrail.org/vallejo-benicia-buffer Vallejo Benicia Waterfront Trail Take a trip through Mexican and early California history on two routes that follow the Carquinez Strait waterfront through the thriving towns of Benicia and Vallejo. Enjoy brisk breezes and occasional fog as you watch the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers funnel into San Francisco Bay. This route travels mostly level trails, including sidewalks, paved and unpaved trails, and foot paths. www.ridgetrail.org/vallejo-benicia-waterfront

/ 57 VALLEJO HIKING/BIKING Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve The Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve is a 215-acre park located at the south end of Mare Island on land that formerly served as the U.S. Navy's first Naval Ammunition Depot, founded in 1857. Hikers can enjoy the southern "original" Mare Island Hill and historic shoreline, both unique park lands. Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays from 10:00 a.m. to one-hour after sunset. www.mareislandpreserve.org

Mare Island San Pablo Bay Trail The Mare Island San Pablo Bay Walking Trail is located on the western side of Mare Island with exquisite panoramic vistas of San Pablo Bay, Mt. Diablo, the Carquinez Strait, the East Bay hills, Mt. Tamalpais and the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. It also offers a totally unique perspective on the Mare Island Naval Shipyard seen by few including long-time shipyard workers. The up to 4-mile roundtrip trail is an easy walk on all flat terrain. See a seasonal wetland chock full of waterfowl and shorebirds. The rare treat is the number of raptors in the sky above. The trail has 12 interpretive panels and benches along the way. www.mareislandpreserve.org/Walk_Mare_Island/Mare_Island_ Walking_Trails_WEST.html
