22 23 Set Designer’s Notes ANNOUNCING

I love practicing the art of deception……at least when it comes to dressing the stage. Trompe l’oeil, the French phrase for “deceive the eye”, is a painting technique used to create the illusion of three dimensions. It has captured our imaginations since the ancient Greek Zeuxis tricked the birds into pecking at his painted grapes. The technique was the favoured device of baroque theatre designers seeking to astonish their audiences with multiple scene changes and magical effects. Our production of Don Giovanni presents the opera as the comedy Mozart intended and as such, I felt CAMPAIGN for CREATION it allowed me to employ the technique with more playfulness than ever. Though the stage is set as a fully OPERA ATELIER’S FUND FOR OUR FUTURE realized 18th century courtyard, a troupe of players changes scenes with the aid of trompe l’oeil drops and flats that toy with the viewer’s perception of two We are thrilled to announce a special campaign with a goal of and three dimensions. $10 million dollars over 5 years to create new productions and In the first scene, a drop representing Donna Anna’s revive existing Opera Atelier productions. Later in the opera Don Giovanni’s ballroom is created by a pair of immense trompe l’oeil mirrored doors surmounted by the coat of arms of the Tenorio family (Juan Tenorio was the antihero in the earliest version of the story by dramatist Tirso de Molina. In fact, like “Don Juan” in English, “Tenorio” has come to mean “womanizer” in Spanish). Above the doors is the minstrels’ gallery where painted instruments have been abandoned by their players and sheets of music appear to drift to the floor forever suspended in mid-air. Don Giovanni is an opera in which the theme of masquerade plays a major role. When designing this production I felt there was no better way to reflect that charming duplicity than by creating a setting that repeatedly asked the question “What is real and what is an illusion?”
