Arts Residency: Response ​ ​ 1-24 June 2018 , Bressay, Shetland

Shetland Arts is offering a three-week residency for an artist of any discipline to stay in the artist accommodation at Bressay Lighthouse, to create and present work in response to both the location and the work of exhibiting artist, Amanda Welch.

Location

Bressay Lighthouse is a 19th century lighthouse situated on the small island of Bressay, Shetland, UK. It is owned and managed by the Shetland Amenity Trust.

Bressay lies just off the east coast of mainland Shetland, a five minute ferry journey from the main town of . The Lighthouse is at the south end of Bressay, approximately 3 miles from the ferry terminal. It has self catering cottages, a live-work artist studio space and an exhibition space comprising three exhibition rooms that adjoin the live-work space.

Project overview

Shetland Arts will rent the live-work studio space and exhibition rooms from 1 May to 30 June 2018. As part of our off-site gallery programme for 2018 an exhibition by London-based visual artist Amanda Welch will take place at Bressay Lighthouse during May and June, (3 May - 24 June TBC) http://www.amandajanewelch.co.uk Her exhibition will focus on maps - mostly but not exclusively linked to Shetland.

Amanda will be resident during May, both to install her show, to invigilate the space during opening hours (probably Thursdays - Sundays 10am-5pm TBC) and deliver school workshops and/or talks (TBA).

For the first three weeks of June (1-24 June 2018) Shetland Arts is offering a residency for an artist of any discipline to stay in the artist accommodation at Bressay Lighthouse, to create and present work in response to Amanda’s show and the lighthouse’s unique/remote location. The resident artist will be required to invigilate the show during opening hours (above) but will have no time restrictions beyond this. He/she may wish to present work alongside Amanda’s exhibition e.g. in the adjoining studio space, online or as a performance outside.

Fees and costs

Shetland Arts will provide accommodation and studio space at Bressay Lighthouse for the month of June 2018 for one person (or a couple) and use of a bicycle on Bressay. Shetland Arts will also provide up to £300 towards flights/ferry to Shetland and travel within Shetland, and a residency fee of £300. All other costs are ​ to be borne by the successful candidate(s).
