A 5.8 RS earthquake (USGS 6.3 magnitude) struck SUMATERA SELATAN Province on Tuesday 06 March 2007, at 10:49 hours (Western Indonesia Time). The epicentre is located 16 km southwest of Batusangkar District at a depth of 33 km approx. Batusangkar is located 102 km north of Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra Province. The tremor was felt in surrounding areas such as District (around 64 km northeast of Padang), Padang city, Pekanbaru (Riau Province) and even in Singapore. The quake was followed by an aftershock of 5.8 RS 11 km southwest LAMPUNG of Batusangkar at a depth of 23 km at 12.49.

Local and international media have reported some 60 persons dead, while preliminary contact with local authorities indicate that buildings including a school, a local bank and hundreds of Sera houses have been heavily damaged or destroyed. Some schools and government offices were closed early to anticipate subsequent earthquakes. The Head of Solok district confirmed that one school in Solok was heavily damaged and landlines have been cut off in West Sumatra.
