A Religious Census was taken in 1766 in the Diocese of Cloyne There were no CUDDIGAN‟s listed in Cloyne but there were 2 CADOGAN‟S which is an older form of the surname. Both surnames are found in but in Cloyne it is now CUDDIGAN. NAME TOWN or COUNTRY RELIGION 75 Cadogan, John Town Papist 133 Cadogan, Michael Town Papist

I applied the numbers, to show the order in which they appeared in the database, as it was not recorded alphabetically No townlands were mentioned, the only distinction made was between the Town of Cloyne or the Country (surrounding townlands). Religion was either PROTESTANT or PAPIST.

1851-53, Griffith’s Valuation was completed for Co. Cork. It was for Taxation purposes and listed each “tenement” or dwelling and gave details of the buildings, land etc but listed only the “Head of Household”. Again no CUDDIGAN‟s listed in Cloyne but there were 4 CADDOGAN‟S in Ballycroneen and 1 CADOGAN in Church St., Cloyne. Griffith‟s Valuation was recorded by CIVIL PARISH which is more akin to the (Protestant) Parish and bears little resemblance to the Parish. Ballycroneen is in the Civil Parish of Cloyne but is also in the Catholic Parish of Cloyne. (this is not always the case with townlands).

5/ Cadogan, Thomas Church Street, Town of Cloyne Thomas resided at No. 63 of the 99 houses in Church St. He had “House, offices & garden” [offices was the term used to describe any kind of outhouse, barn, shed etc.] Lessor or Landlord was “Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross” The garden was 15 perches in area, valued at 5/- and the House was valued at £2- 5-0 This may have been the father of the John Cuddigan b. 1828 in my database.

BALLINTEMPLE is another name for CHURCHTOWN being a direct translation from the Irish “Baile an Teampaill” Baile = Homestead or townland.(Anglicized as BALLY, this is why so many townlands in Ireland begin with BALLY). Teampall = Church.

Norah was the mother of the local butcher, Michael Cuddigan who retired last year but whose premises still bears the Cuddigan name even though under new ownership. It is now CUDDIGAN‟S DELI. Michael is still frequently in Cloyne at the old house just below the Round Tower. He lives near Cork City. He has one daughter, who I think is married in New York. Mary & Anna were his sisters.

In my own database I recorded any instance of the surname MEADE which I came across in CLOYNE and neighbouring parish AGHADA, because my father‟s mother was Meade. In the course of this I came across a woman called Catherine Meade, the same name as my grandmother but obviously not her as this Catherinne was married to John Cuddigan. I decided to keep note of her in any event in case the name would crop up again and cause confusion with my own grandmother. I‟m glad I did now as the Cuddigan‟s involved may be distantly connected to be your family. Even though the first Cuddigan in my database is John Cuddigan m. Ellen ?, they appear to be later than your John & Ellen. Here are the details

Nos. 492/3 In 1766 John and Michael Cadogan were residents of Cloyne. No name spelt Cuddigan appears in the Census of that year. James Cuddigan (1828 - 1 890) by his wife Ellen (b. 1832) had James (1876 - 1912) and John (1862- 1906), both victuallers. John married Catherine Meade (1879 - 1955) as her first husband (she married secondly James McCarthy, vintner, Church St. and was the mother of Michael V. McCarthy (1919 - 1975) who served on from 1950 to his death in 1975; see No. 111) and had James (1898 - 1968) who by his wife Nora (1895 - 1981), both buried in the new cemetery, had James (1927 - 1938. see No. 112), and Michael who is the current owner of the still flourishing victualling business. The Cuddigan family has had a long association with butchering in Cloyne, at least since 1870 when James Cuddigan surfaces as a victualler, and possibly going back to Thomas Cadogan who was in a way of business not defined at 63 Church St. in 1853. One might expect danger climbing a tree or putting a halter on a bull but surely not when driving sheep along Church St. on a quiet Sunday morning in Feb. of 1893 while service was being conducted in the Cathedral. The drover was a young fellow named John Driscoll, the sheep belonged to butcher John Cuddington (sic) who had land near-by, and the unexpected happened when 100 ft. of the graveyard wall collapsed, Driscoll miraculously escaping death. This year of 1893 seemed peculiarly unlucky for the youth of Cloyne for a young lad named Walton (his father, an ex-RIC policeman, was the Cathedral caretaker) broke his arm incautiously leaping the Cemetery wall and John Collins broke a leg near the National School when trying to extricate himself from the ground known as "The Bog".
