More recently, the superhero narrative has moved from cinema to television, which allows for the narratives to address more pressing cultural concerns in a more immediate fashion. Furthermore, millions of viewers perpetuate the televised narratives because they resonate with the values and stories in the shows. Through Fantasy Theme Analysis, this project examines the audience values within the Arrow’s superhero fantasy and the influence of posthumanism on the show’s superhero fantasy.

Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2020 Seeing the Invisible: Batman’s Gotham and Green Arrow’s Star City Unmasked Anders, Lisann Abstract: ”[...] individuality in the modern city becomes a staged production of superficial effects” (Suhr 240-241). This performative aspect that André Suhr describes when he talks about the individual’s role in the city is predominantly emphasised in superhero comics, in which the hero is dressing up in order to take on the persona of ‘hero’ and or ‘vigilante.’ In this regard, two examples protrude, namely The Batman and The Green Arrow. For both the city is transformed into a stage on which they can perform their heroism. However, in doing so, they are at the risk of losing their identity as Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen, respectively. In the article, I explore the creation and loss of identity within the city space by means of the Green Arrow comics by Mike Grell as well as the TV show Arrow and Batman: Broken City by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. In these texts, the struggle of wearing different masks is shown in the characters’ identity formation but also the city since the latter, like its heroes, is torn between anarchy and law, between despair and hope. • Haunted Detectives: the Mysteries of American Trauma
HAUNTED DETECTIVES: THE MYSTERIES OF AMERICAN TRAUMA DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian R. Hauser, B.A., M.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Jared Gardner, Adviser Professor James Phelan ____________________________________ Professor Linda Mizejewski Adviser English Graduate Program Copyright by Brian R. Hauser 2008 ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I investigate American motion picture narratives from the 1990s in which detectives encounter the supernatural. These narratives did not originate during this decade, but there were a remarkable number of them compared to previous periods. I argue that the supernatural is often analogous to personal, national, or cultural trauma. I further suggest that a detective investigating the supernatural stands in for the psychoanalyst, who studies and treats this trauma. I then trace the origins of the supernatural detective in history, as well as in British and American popular fiction. To begin, I discuss Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999) as an example of a supernatural detective, who is himself traumatized but who also manages to solve the supernatural mystery in the eponymous village. That solution points to the obscured narrative of women’s rights in the early-American republic. Next, I suggest that spaces can be traumatized like people. I introduce the concept of the chronotope of the traumatized space, which I then apply to Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and its various film and television adaptations to argue that these influential haunted house tales have helped repress scientific research into the paranormal as a reputable field of inquiry and the paranormal researcher as an admirable calling.

  • 'Seeing the Invisible: Batman's Gotham and Green Arrow's Star
SEEING THE INVISIBLE: BATMAN’S GOTHAM AND GREEN ARROW’S STAR CITY UNMASKED LISANN ANDERS UNIVERSITY OF ZÜRICH Cities in comics are often represented as confining and liberating at the same time. They promise opportunity and prospect embodying the American Dream which, nonetheless, comes at a cost. The downsides can be diverse: the loss of family and friends due to crimes, an overwhelming anonymity, or the loss the self. André Suhr sums this aspect of the city up by outlining that On the one hand it liberates the individual to concentrate on him- or herself […]; on the other hand this very liberation may produce loneliness and isolation. In an atmosphere of general indifference it gets harder and harder to be recognized as an individual. So, according to Simmel, individuality in the modern city becomes a staged production of superficial effects. (Suhr 2010, 240-241) This performative aspect of the urban setting is predominantly emphasized in superhero comics, in which the hero is dressing up in order to take on the persona of “hero” and/or “vigilante.” In this regard, two examples stand out, namely the eponymous protagonists of the comic series The Batman and The Green Arrow. For both, the city is transformed into a stage on which they can perform their heroism. However, in doing so, they are at the risk of losing their unmasked identity respectively as Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen. In the following article, I would like to explore the creation and loss of identity within the city space through the analysis of the comic miniseries Batman: Broken City (2004) by writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso, and Mike Grell’s comic series Green Arrow (issues 1-12) from 1987–1989 (later republished 1 JULY 2020 POPMEC RESEARCH BLOG «» POPMEC.HYPOTHESES.ORG as collected editions in 2012-2013)1, as well as the TV show Arrow seasons 1-52.
