4 1950’S AT BEAMISH A flavour of the 1950s arrives at Beamish this February! Beamish Museum has spent the last few months researching the history of County Durham in the 1950s, focusing on the controversial 1951 County Development Plan, which resulted in villages across the region being classified as ‘Category D’. The Museum will be running activities and events from the 16-24 February for visitors to learn more about what happened and get an insight into what living in a Category D village was like. Beamish has been working with schools and community groups in the , Crook and Spennymoor districts to explore the changes that took place in these areas in the 1950s and to examine the emotional and physical impacts of Category D. The project has had vital support from members of the History and Heritage Forum, with people from local history societies and groups doing research, running tours and working with their local communities. The Category D project is part of a wider plan to begin actively collecting objects from the 20th century in order to recreate more recent time periods at the Museum. If you have objects that you would like to donate please Kathleen Parkin from Howden-le-Wear Local History Society check the press or our website closer to the time for more details taking the local Primary school on a History walk Copyright 2013 Beamish Museum Beamish is open every day 16-24 February, from 10am-4pm
