A Night for Legends

here was much laughter and celebration in the air at Camp THess Kramer’s amphitheater on the warm evening of September 13. Gathered were alumni from many decades, joining friends, coworkers, and families of the event’s honorees, the newest camp Legends: John Bard, camp chef for 20 years; Howard Kaplan, former camp director and current executive director of the Temple; and Dr. Howie Reinstein, camp doctor and our current medical Camp Director Douglas Lynn director. Rabbi Steve Leder and former Camp Directors Steve Breuer John Bard, center, with event guests with Doc Howie Reinstein and Howard Kaplan introduced our Legends, each of whom was honored for his commitment to and impact on our camps and campers. Among the night’s special and moving moments were the speeches made by each Legend. They shared stories of their own camp experiences, many of which have had profound professional, as well as personal, impacts on their lives. Ari Kaplan (Leadership ’05, and Howard’s son) led Havdalah and performed his own music; and comedian Justin Berkman (Leadership ’95) worked his stand-up under the stars.
