Value Added Exceeds

at Lord Grey

Value Added is a government measure that looks at how much

progress students have made from the beginning to the end of their Level 3 qualification.

The Lord Grey Sixth Form team are very pleased with the recently released positive figures on ‘Value Added’ for their Post-16 courses. David Smith, Head of the Sixth Form said; “Our Sixth Form are not only judged on the results, of which ours in the summer were very strong with a large number of the very top grades, but also on Value Added. This measures how much students have progressed since their GCSE re- sults and for us to have a really positive figure for this shows that we have helped the students accelerate in their education.

Aspire,Learn, Achieve We also have courses which include re-sit English GCSE and the students achieved half a grade higher than similar students, nationally. This is extremely good and helps them to move on successfully.

Lord Grey News Grey Lord We recruit many students who were not at Lord Grey for their GCSEs and they are also showing solid Value Added in their studies.”

2016 BIG MK Youth Debate A Lord Grey Win...

Students from schools across joined forces to debate important issues and get their voices heard on key subjects that affect young people. They had the opportunity to question key decision makers on issues such as mental health and how Milton Keynes supports healthy lifestyles.

Lord Grey School hosted the first round of the debating competition on Friday 14 October. The evening was chaired by Iain Stewart, our local MP and he brought an impressive team of local politicians and personalities to judge the debating teams, representing five local schools and the college.

Our team, Deborah Winter and Barbara Naughton-Ammon had to go first, which is always much more difficult, and proposed a motion supporting the possible new grammar schools. They were opposed by students from MK College but overcame them with impressive research and argument.

The other winners on the night were St Paul’s Catholic School and . This enables them, along with our team, to go to the next round which will be held at the end of November.

Many congratulations to the winning debaters.

David Smith, Director of Sixth Form.

THE WINNING POEM

If Only (Sonnet)

If only I could warn you ‘bout the road’, the risk and toy of playing with your life, the dangers of the life and modern code, the choice you choose when flirting with a knife. If only you would listen to your mum, your gang is not your blood - its just a lie, you think you’re bad because you hold a gun, your blood will spill and none of them will cry, if only you would put aside your drill, big bangs begin to haunt the silent night, the cost of life is different to a bill,

I pray and hope you do what’s really right.

If only - you would listen to my voice.

Only if - you make the correct choice. By Johnathan Mavuela, C05

The winners:

1st – Jonathan Mavuela, C05 2nd – Mashkura Begum, L02 3rd – Caira Clark, E15 4th – Amir Bari, C07 5th – Saima Bari, C08 6th – Madison Bylmer, U08 th 7 – Sophie Mollison, M15

It was National Poetry Day on 6 October 2016 and the theme was Autumn. Ryan was inspired to write his poem during a lesson after looking at the leaves on the trees, and seeing them falling to the ground...

The Life of a Leaf

The life of a leaf is easy, just hanging from a tree all day. We have to work sometimes to collect sunlight. Life-giving, beautiful sunlight.

It’s coming to that time of year when I go away. As my colours change, I become dim. The light goes away as I fade away.

My connection with the oak tree splits as our paths separate, and I fall for eternity.

I loved it.” tomorrow’ amongst others, plus some that they may have Blake Tibble heard on old films. “It was a great experience at Caton House. COLOSSUS HOUSE

What a busy end of Autumn 1. Colossus pulled in a dynamic strong first half term! Look what we have been achieving…

SPELLING BEE - Over the period of a week, two members from Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 each had to correctly spell the words dictated by Mrs Bowen, Head of Lorenz House.

Our amazing entrants were ALL champions, we won every year category! Fantastic! Here they are beaming for joy.

Congratulations to Joe Osborn, Hermione Woodhams, Maame Atu, Daniel Black, Connie Wiltshire, Owen Alford, Chloe Osborn, Jonathan Mavuela and Mrs Enright, Head of Colossus House Captains Colossus House. - Grace and Brandon.

Not content with winning the Spelling Bee, Colossus set forth to grab another trophy - Boys Dodgeball.

Our wonderful, energetic and fierce teams competed, slamming those balls, making it very difficult for other teams to dodge. We put up a brave and strong defence, but were pipped right on the last point - coming in second place. Well done boys, you were fantastic! The team: Spencer Wilkins, Blake Tibble, Billy Morgan, Ubayedul Haque - Triumphant after they beat Enigma!

Some fantastic moves!

The team: Connor McCarthy, Prince Mafuta, Kevin Opuku and fantastic Morgan Wiltshire smashing it!

COLOSSUS HOUSE On Friday, 21st October 2016 our House Captains and a number of students went along to the Milton Keynes Food Bank to see the operation. It was amazing what they found, a tightly run operation feeding over 14,000 families a year, in Milton Keynes. The surprise was that the families don’t need food as much as little luxuries; like soap, washing-up liquid, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, spices, salt, pepper and toilet rolls.

On Monday 14th November, Colossus House will launch their appeal in House Assemblies asking students for any donations that they are able to give. Twenty five pence buys two toothbrushes; forty seven pence buys a tube of toothpaste. All the items contributed will be taken to the Food Bank Centre during the last week of term and the team are looking forward to helping to create parcels and packages.

So please dig deep Lord Grey and let us make Christmas more enjoyable for those in need.

Thank you for all your support.
