WHAT IS IT?

Description of the tool The installation of eight multimedia information points in the town halls of the municipalities of major towns in the mining districts (, , Villablino, , , Guardo and Barruelo), in addition to one for the Junta of Castilla and León, in order to facilitate access to information for all the municipalities and users.

The activities of these multimedia kiosks will primarily consist of the following: Presentation of interactive and multimedia information. Access and utilisation of communication technologies and the Internet. Possibility of using the Internet browsers Explorer or Netscape. Maximum facility of use. Maximum facility of maintenance. Autonomous operation. Flexible system modularity. Multiple possibilities of expansion and integration.

Objectives and target groups Young people affected by long-term unemployment. Young people seeking their first job. The unemployed aged between 25 and 29. Women, particularly those aged between 24 and 29, and others seeking their first job or wishing to return to the job market. The handicapped. The long-term unemployed or those affected by the conversion of the mining industry. Workers with a potential risk of losing their jobs. Directors and technical staff of companies (operational or newly created) in the mining districts.

WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED?

Innovation The act of bringing the new communication and information technologies closer to very isolated areas and a population lacking this type of tool. Making the Public Authorities accessible to citizens.

In addition, it has provided the possibility of informing the inhabitants of the mining basins of the content and measures adopted by the Pact.

Results realised and expected Employment: Activities developed and jobs generated

The information points will provide access to all the existing lines of help in the Junta of Castilla and León for developing employment, forming new companies, etc. This section cannot be quantified.

Health and Social Services:

The information points will provide information on the health and social services of the Community, as well as about the investment made in these sectors in the scope of the Territorial Employment Pact in the mining basins of León and Palencia, which are as follows:

Construction and renovation of 15 sites destined for local consulting premises in the various municipalities throughout the provinces of León and Palencia. Endowing the local consulting premises with equipment according to their individual needs with regard to general furniture, clinical furniture, clinical-surgical material, etc. Reconditioning and enlarging the health centres of the mining basins. Due to increased duties and services being provided by several of these health centres and because of the deterioration caused to facades and roofs of other health centres, as a result of meteorological conditions, it has been decided to undertake four reconditioning projects in four different municipalities of the mining basins.

Environmental activity in Colinas Total budget 364,828,532 ptas. Training: Interested parties have had the possibility of being informed of the training on offer.

Industry and crafts: Activities developed and jobs generated.

In this domain, information is also provided concerning the activities developed by the Pact. The creation of a marble workshop in (León). This project will also lead to the creation of 1 full-time job for an entire year. A project concerning the construction of an inn located in Cármenes (assuming the creation of two jobs) A Regional Tourism Centre in Vega de Viejos () (assuming the creation of seven jobs) The renovation of a building destined to be used as a one-star inn located in Velilla del Río Carrión (assuming the creation of three jobs)

WHAT IS THE COST?

Initial investment (material, fixed assets) and sources of funding: The total cost of the project is 77,440.41 euros, of which FEDER provided 58,080.31 euros and the Junta of Castilla and León contributed 19,360.10 euros

Other characteristics: There is an ageing population due to the gradual exodus of young people who have been affected by the reduced labour market in the mining industry.

Territory: The area is mainly mountainous and the climate is extremely cold during the winter months, with frequent snowfalls and icy roads hindering access to a significant part of the municipalities.
