Sustainability on Sea Festival of sustainable ideas

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Hastings & St Leonards 21–29 September Sustainability on Sea festival 21-29 Sept 2019 & St Leonards

Welcome to Sustainability on Sea festival 2019, Transition Town Hastings’s festival celebrating the projects and organisations that help the people of the Hastings and Rother region live more sustainably. Within this guide you will find details of over 60 events and activities spanning the area from Winchelsea in the east to Bexhill in the west, all exploring different aspects of sustainability.

The theme of this year’s festival is What We Can Do, showcasing the meaningful changes we can all make for the benefit of the environment and our communities. Sustainability is an increasingly serious and urgent topic but that’s not to say we can’t have fun! With activities from beach cleans to bike rides, activism to food sharing, and Hastings’s first ever Car Free Day (see page 5) there is something for everyone. The festival runs over nine days from Saturday 21–Sunday 29 September culminating in an all-day Big Green Fair (see page 15) at The Stade on 29 September. Sustainability on Sea brings together a wide range of sustainable projects organised under the globally recognised One Planet Living ten theme framework; ten simple principles that cover all aspects of social, environmental and economic sustainability.

Energise South has been set up as the new renewables investment arm of Energise Energise Sussex Coast and is a member of the Energy4All family of energy co-ops. South People are waking up to the urgent need to act on climate change. In our communities we can come together to reimagine and rebuild our world.

Transition is a movement that has been growing around the world since 2005. It’s about communities stepping up to address the global challenges we face by starting local. By coming together, we are able to crowd-source solutions. We seek to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other, both as groups or as wider communities. In practice, we are reclaiming the economy, sparking entrepreneurship, re-imagining work, re-skilling ourselves and weaving webs of connection and support. It’s an approach that has spread now to over 50 countries, in thousands of groups: in towns, villages, cities, universities, and schools. We really hope you feel inspired to take part, and Transition Town Hastings would be honoured if you joined us to help reimagine and rebuild our world.
