he spectacular Muniellos Biosphere Reserve (Europe’s most important biosphere T reserve and one of the Principality of Asturias’ five natural biosphere reserves) offers all kinds of activities. These include horse riding in the Somiedo Nature Reserve (also declared a biosphere reserve along with the Redes, Picos de Europa and Oscos-Eo nature reserves), ascending the Angliru, a famous cycling route, canoeing down the River Sella, climbing the rugged Picos de Europa or practising the different types of winter sports available at ski resorts such as the historical Valgrande-Pajares Ski Resort (Lena) or the recently inaugurated Fuentes de Invierno Ski Resort (Aller). The extraordinary orography in Asturias has provided it with a magnificent nature trail network, from the coast to the mountains, ideal for hikers of all levels. The common denominator here is, without a doubt, the protection and conservation of the environment. Asturias’ protected nature areas will shortly be linked together creating a spectacular 420 kilometre nature trail that will connect from east to west a large number of existing trails. A 180 kilometre coastal nature trail is already available for hikers and cycling enthusiasts. Other activities available here include scaling, potholing, scuba diving, surfing, paintballing, bungee jumping, canoeing, mountaineering, rope bridging, quad riding, ziplining, orienteering etc. Have we forgotten something? La modalidad deportiva consiste en hacer cero durante dos días y poder pasar a la final; en la final tienes que hacer cero en dos mangas para poder llegar al desempate y hacer el recorrido en el menor tiempo posible.

Yes, I won an individual gold medal and team silver medal last year in Segovia in June and an outright winner gold medal in Castellon in September. This type of competition basically consists of making clear rounds for two days prior to the final. The actual final consists of achieving two clear rounds prior to the final phase where the rider with the best clear round time wins.

El Infanta Elena que se disputará en marzo de 2010 en el S.E.K. de Madrid. ¿A que edad empezaste a saltar? Empecé a montar a los 7 años y a saltar con 8, cuando mis padres me compraron mi primer pony B que se llama “Jolie Jumper Star” al que tengo un gran cariño, aunque sólo lo monto de vez en cuando; con 9 años por fin participé en mi primer concurso ecuestre. Tu hermana también salta, ¿no? ¿Quién os llevó a iniciaros en este deporte? Sí, mi hermana Belén también monta en la misma categoría que yo. Tiene un pony que se llama “Piko Star”. Desde pequeñas nos gustaban mucho los caballos y en los viajes familiares siempre buscábamos la ocasión de ir a alguna hípica y disfrutar con los caballos. ¿En qué consiste tu entrenamiento? Tengo que montar como mínimo 3 días a la semana. Los fines de semana que puedo voy también a entrenar. Cuando se acercan las fechas de algún concurso procuro intensificar el entrenamiento. ¿Y el de tu caballo? El entrenamiento del pony consiste en pasearlo durante diez minutos, trotarlo dos minutos y medio a cada mano, luego galoparlo cinco minutos a cada mano y saltar un día sí y uno no. Además, los fines de semana nos preparan en la hípica un recorrido. ¿Cual es el proceso para llegar a conformar un binomio jinete-caballo tan eficaz como el tuyo con “Luciano”? Pasar tiempo con Luciano, cuidarlo, hablarle y procurar transmitirle seguridad y tranqui- lidad. A un caballo hay que quererlo. ¿Crees que en España hay buenos amazonas y jinetes? ¿Tienes algún refe- rente? Sí, hay bastantes jinetes y amazonas que se les da muy bien la equitación. Resulta emocio- nante competir con los jinetes de Córdoba. ¿Hay algo que hagas siempre antes de competir? No hago nada especial, intento estar tranquila y concentrarme antes de salir a la pista. Después de hacer el recorrido, le doy caramelos a Luciano. ¿Con que competición sueñas? Con el Infanta Elena y el próximo Campeonato de España.

I began riding when I was 7-years-old and started jumping when I was 8-years-old which was when my parents bought me my first B section pony called “Jolie Jumper Star” of which I am still very fond even though I only ride him once and a while now. I took part in my first competition when I was 9-years-old. Your sister is also a show jumper, is that correct? Who introduced you both to this sport? Yes, my sister, Belen, competes in the same category as I do. She has a pony called Piko Star. We liked horses even when we were very young and always looked out for a riding school when we went on holiday with the family where we could go and have some fun with the horses. What about the horse’s training? Horse training consists of walking for ten minutes, trotting for two-and-a-half minutes each side, galloping for five minutes each side and jumping every other day. The riding school prepares a weekend training programme. How have you managed to create such a close relationship with your horse, Luciano? I guess by spending a lot of time with him, looking after him, speaking to him, transmitting confidence and tranquillity etc. A horse needs a lot of love. Do you think Spain has good riders? Who are your favourite ones? Yes, there are quite a lot of good riders here. It is very exciting competing against the riders from Cordoba for example. Do you have any particular quirks when competing? No, I do not really do anything special. I just try to remain calm and collected while waiting my turn. After we finish, however, I normally reward Luciano with some sweets. Which competition do you dream of winning? I would love to win the Infanta Elena Trophy and the next Spanish Show Jumping Championships.

Along one of the arteries of the old bed of the river Turia we find the City of Arts and Sciences, designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela.
