Sanctus-DoubleChorus Giuseppe Verdi conducted the first performance of his magnificent Requiem on May 22, Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Holy, Holy, Holy, 1874 at St. Marie's Church in Milan. It was inspired by the death of Verdi's close personal Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God ofSabaoth. II I friend, the writer Alessandro Manzoni. Not intended for ecclesiastical use, the Requiem Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. contains liturgical elements from the Mass for the dead, including the Dies irae, a major Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest. component of the work. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of The opening movement contains two distinct sections, Requiem and Kyrie. The first the Lord. section evokes the feeling of penitence and humility, sadness, mystery, and a sense of vast Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest. distances. The Kyrie introduces the soloists with the chorus in impassioned treatment The Dies irae, a sequence concerning the day of the last judgement, is a vast movement The dynamics range from.fff to pppp; the tempo is allegro agitato at one extreme (for the Dies V. AgnusDei irae) and adagio (for the Quid sum miser) at the other, and practically every major and minor I I key is used. Every opportunity is taken to achieve precisioa ia pictorial detail. The musical Agnus Dei-Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano and Chorus architecture is immense with ineluctable musical climaxes, whether of melody or harmony. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: 0 Lamb of God, that takes away the sins The Offertorio is a movement of great beauty for solo quartet. It has beea said that in such ofthe world, great beauty lies the true consolation of very deep grief. The relatively brief Sanctus is a dona eis requiem sempitemam. grant them everlasting rest. double fugue for two choruses with its subject laid out in an ascending arpeggio. The I I subsequent Agnus Dei begins uausually, with the soprano and mezzo-soprano in octaves VI. Lux aeterna accompaniment, a long, flowing, solema prayer which is repeated by the choir. la the Lux aeterna, set as a vocal trio, Verdi seizes oa the immediate vision of supernal Lux aeterna-Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor and Bass brightaess. The movement is poetic, infused with quiet beauties and serenity. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine: Let eternal light shine upon them, Lord, 11 I The work coacludes with Libera me, a movemeat that survived from a project for a Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum and on Thy saints forever, memorial mass for Rossini. Included in the movemeat is a recapitulation of the openiag quia pius es. for Thou are merciful Requiem and the Dies irae. It concludes with a fugue using stretto and augmeatatioa and Requiem aetemam dona eis, Domine: Grant them eternal rest, Lord, resolviag into the final utterance of the soprano on the Libera me text above a sustained ppp et lux perpetua luceat eis. and let perpetual light shine upon them C major chord in the voices a cappella.
