Not only does Israel have to deal with world condemnation, the Jewish state also has to listen to the “armchair quarterbacks” in America who think they know how Israel should deal with the situation

Not only does Israel have to deal with world condemnation, the Jew- ish state also has to listen to the “arm- chair quarterbacks” in America who think they know how Israel should deal with the situation. While it may be human nature to voice opin- ions (and Jews have many opinions!) especially about things that we feel strongly about, we should be cau- tious. The fact is that few of these “experts” were ever in the military and are halfway around the world. Furthermore, there are many facts that are not for public consumption and that are only known to those in leadership positions. Also, the ex- pression of an opinion that is con- trary to the Israeli government’s pol- icy could be perceived as indicating a lack of support for Israel. Instead of telling Israel what it should do, a better use of our energy would be to daven with more kava- nah (concentration and focus) and increase our learning. That is some- thing that everyone can do. You do not have to be a military or political expert. Leave the decisions to the de- cision-makers. We should do our part and let them do theirs.

Next, Rabbi Marcus shared several incredible true stories that illustrated the power of t’fi lah. One story in- volved four Israeli pilots chosen for a very dangerous mission in 1982. They consulted the Steipler Rav for a brachah before they went. The Rav gave them a bra- chah, and in Bnei Brak signs were posted for bachurim to say t’hilim at the exact time of the mission. The four pilots returned safely and, after witnessing the power of prayer on their behalf, they decided to be- come more religious. Another story was from Rabbi ’s sefer. It involved Yeshaya Barda- kai who came to Israel in 1821 and was a well-known fi gure during that time period. A widower, he came by ship with his two small children. He let her go and she screamed, “Father, How can you let go of me? How can you let me die?” The father heard this plea and found some reserve of adrenalin. Somehow he was able to save her and swim to shore with both of them. Later, he told his young daughter, “Always remember that whenever you are in a time of trouble, turn to our Heavenly Father and pray, “Tatty, how can you let go of me? How can you let me die?” Rabbi Marcus explained that a prayer with this in- tensity and desperation cannot be ignored by Hash- em. He shared other anecdotes that illustrated this im- portant idea.
