GROW A GARDEN TO REPEL MOSQUITOES • Lemongrass (also known as Citronella Grass) is the best plant for preventing mosquitoes. No need to crush or cut it. It’s fragrant enough to fend off pests as is. • Rosemary, basil and lavender also naturally repel mosquitoes. To make the most of your repellent, take portions of the plants and crush the leaves in order to further enhance the air with the fragrance. • In addition to keeping mosquitoes out of your yard, you can rub leaves from rosemary, basil or lavender on your wrists to keep mosquitoes at bay when you leave the house. • All the above plants can be planted in containers, as well as directly in gardens. Because we all tend to relax in the sitting area of our yard, patio pots are the perfect place for these plants. • The more plants in your landscape, the more birds you’ll attract and birds are the number one predator of mosquitoes. • Scented geranium is another great plant for keeping Oregon mosquitoes away. • Catmint is a plant that would be considered ‘hardy’ for the Oregon climate. The others should be grown as annuals and brought inside to a brightly-lit, warm room to survive winters. • All the above plants are available at the Hollywood Orchard Supply Hardware. “At Travelers’ House, they take care of the little details, like a plug outlet on the wall next to the top bunk to recharge my cell phone,” said Simon Phillimore, a guest visiting from Bournemouth, England. After earning a degree in international politics last July, the 22-year-old Brit worked briefly at a cafe in his hometown before embarking on a six-week journey that began in Australia and New Zealand. From there he planned a three-week tour of the United States west coast, starting in San Francisco, then Portland and ending up in Seattle. Phillimore booked his reservation for Travelers’ House on-line, along with approximately 65 percent of their guests, according to Travelers’ House owner Grant Williams. “We’re consistently rated the number one hostel in the Portland area,” said Williams who opened Travelers’ House in July 2014. His business partner at the time was Ethan Knight, former executive director of Carpe Diem Education, who purchased the 1910 Foursquare at 710 N. Alberta St. When Knight bought the house next door, 650 N. Alberta St., Williams proposed rezoning both properties as part of the 2035 Comprehensive Plan revision. Northeast Portland resident Dawn Nilson discovered Sauvie Island shortly after arriving in Oregon 20 years ago, but she often became frustrated while trying to find a birding area or a place to put her kayak in the water. The 26,000-acre island, about the size of Manhattan but with only one access bridge, isn’t criss-crossed with roads, and a newcomer may drive 30 miles in the wrong direction while trying to find a beach or boating area, she said. Available maps aren’t detailed, and the road system is hard to discern on most of them, said Nilson, an environmental consultant for the past 30 years. Several months ago, she was between assignments and decided to create her own guide with clear outlines of roads and the waters. The Sauvie Island Recreation Guide: Birding, Boating, Bicycling, Beaches, Berries & More, sized to fold into a back pocket, is printed on a recycled material that makes it water resistant and tear proof. The central section is a map, but most of the guide is filled with information, Nilson noted. She has listed five beaches, seven boat access points, two designated trails, and four birding sites. Other points of interest are part of the guide, too, including Howell Territorial Park, the James Bybee House and the Warrior Rock trailhead of the 7-mile, round-trip trail along the Columbia River Dawn Nilson, creator of the Sauvie Island Recreation Guide, is shown here with a bird-spotting scope on Sauvie Island. By James Bash For the Hollywood Star News Throughout the year, the Multnomah County Library offers informational classes on a variety of subjects. The classes, which are free and focus on everything from basic computer skills to resumé writing, are offered at various library branches throughout the system. One such class, Grow Your Own Hops taught by Pat Leavy, was held in March at the Albina library, 3605 N.E. 15th Ave. During the class, Leavy explained about plants, trellis requirements, fertility, common pests and harvest. Leavy, a tall and easy going fellow with a pillow of silver-white hair, knows hops like the back of his hand. He’s been raising hops for the past 38 years on his family farm located south of Portland near Champoeg State Park. Leavy’s 200-acre farm has been in the family since 1912. He grows organic and non-organic hops, and he was the first person in Oregon to grow organic hops, receiving certification in 2007. According to Leavy, as far as their root system, hops are perennial plants but hop bines, which grow above “By the end ground, die back to the ground of May, the every year. What an awesome neighborhood! I’ve loved it since the early 2000’s when I was the volunteer coordinator at the farmer’s market.” A New Belgium street party, adjacent to Velo Cult Bike Shop and Tavern, opens the festival on Friday, May 6 from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. The free event will feature live entertainment, a beer garden, food vendors, a video-confessional storytelling booth, a photo booth, parking lot games and a gigantic bike parking area. “Filmed by Bike presents the world’s best independent bike movies,” said Crotty. “We love hosting the festival in a city with an unbridled passion for two wheels and an appreciation for the cinematic side of the films with gorgeous footage and innovative film-making techniques.” Several neighborhood businesses will be participating in the festival. Velo Cult has a special New Belgium beer from their rare Lips of Faith series on tap all month long and Nectar Cafe in the Hollywood Mall will be offering a ten percent discount to all festival goers who show their ticket stub or helmet.
