Though not exclusively Christian, the graphic novel, The Beast Within, will educate its target audience by using attractive illustrations, relatable issues, and understandable morals in a fictional, biblically inspired story. This thesis will include character designs, artwork, chapter summaries, and a single chapter of a self-written, self- illustrated graphic novel along with a short summary of Christian references and symbols. The novel will follow six half-human, half-animal warriors on their adventure to restore the balance of their world, which has been disrupted by a powerful enemy. Many believers almost immediately equate evangelism to Sunday morning services, church mission trips, or distribution of witty, ever-popular salvation tracts; however, Jesus utilized other methods to teach His people, such as telling simple stories and using familiar images and illustrations. -

I believe in the story of Wonder Woman. I always have. Not the literal baby being made from clay story, but the metaphorical one. I believe in a story where a woman is the hero and not the victim. I believe in a story where a woman is strong and not weak. Where a woman can fall in love with a man, but she doesnʼt need a man. Where a woman can stand on her own two feet. And above all else, I believe in a story where a woman has superpowers that she uses to help others, and yes, I believe that a woman can help save the world. “Wonder Woman was created as a distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to ʻa world torn by the hatred of men.ʼ”1 While the story of Wonder Woman began back in 1941, I did not discover her until much later, and my introduction didnʼt come at the hands of comic books. Instead, when I was a little girl I used to watch the television show starring Lynda Carter, and the animated television series, Super Friends. -

Li Bradley University Singapore Management University Laura Crysel University of Florida The Dark Triad of personality is composed of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. Despite the common belief that these traits are undesirable, the media is awash with characters that embody the Dark Triad. Characters like Gregory House, M.D., Batman (a.k.a. the Dark Knight), and James Bond all embody these traits and are some of the most popular media franchises today. As entertaining as these characters are, they provide us with a window into the dark side of human nature. Instead of treating the dark side of human nature as inherently maladaptive, we provide an alternative view that, despite their costs, traits like these can confer reproductive and survival benefits for the individual. In so doing, we review the research on the Dark Triad traits and provide a theoretical account for how these traits can confer some positive benefits. To facilitate comprehension, we provide examples taken from the media to show how evolutionary psychology and popular culture intersect. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

At Eventbrite, we estimate that fandom conventions in North America grossed $600M in ticket sales in 2013 alone. Ka-pow! The economic impact of those events to local communities, as reported by convention centers and local chambers of commerce, is often a multiple between 5x and 20x gross ticket sales. That means fandom events are potentially a multi-billion dollar enterprise—and everyone has a stake in keeping the fun rolling on, and the money rolling in. But who are the fans? What draws them to these gatherings? And what opportunities does the surge of fan enthusiasm hold for retailers, media companies and organizers? In June of 2014, Eventbrite conducted an online survey of more than 2600 customers who had purchased tickets to fandom events through their platform in the past two years. The purpose of the survey was to gather data to help organizers, exhibitors, attendees, local communities and other interested parties better understand the opportunities that fandom conventions really present, as compared to old stereotypes about nerds, costumes, and the Simpson’s “Comic Book Guy.” Better information can lead to better events that connect with today’s fans and provide more relevant social and selling opportunities for everyone concerned. Achieving rave reviews in critical and commercial acclaim, these films have also introduced some of the most complex superheroes to ever grace the silver screen. It not only marks a new milestone in black cinema, but in the field at large, for creating stories with the budget, impact and cultural power to inspire generations and share stories of all backgrounds.
