Anne Faith Wright ii Abstract This study, "Worship Experiences in Church Schools: Towards a More Effective and Ethical Model", is directed to re-assessing the concept of school worship in the light of the increasingly secularised population of schools sponsored in Western societies by Christian denominations; i.e. a population in which a significant proportion of attendees may not come from a consciously embraced background of religious faith or may belong to an alternative faith tradition. The main issues addressed were: (1) What is the nature and purpose of worship in the church school context? (2) What place can it play in the life of the school? and (3) How should worship activities be conducted, if they are to continue to occupy a place in the life of the church school? First, the relevance of this enquiry was established through a literature survey of thought and practice in some comparable countries, and an analysis of findings obtained from empirical studies of contemporary Australian youth. Second, an ethnographic enquiry using grounded theory research methods illuminated worship practices in nine denominationally sponsored schools in Western Australia, drawing upon both staff and student perceptions. Third, the enquiry then sought to generate a model for the conduct of school worship consistent with a biblical view of Christian worship and with the educational and ethical parameters of the school context. To this end, issues of indoctrination, education and enfaithing were also considered, leading finally to the formulation of a set of guiding principles for conducting worship activities in church schools. iii Worship Experiences in Church Schools: Towards a More Effective and Ethical Model.     Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017 to this edition of the prayer diary, following the Feast St Michael and All Angels until the first Sunday of Advent.   • Annual Review 2018-2019
    Annual Review 2018-2019 Churchwardens’ Report The year 2018 proved to be a very eventful one for us wardens at St Mary’s. After nearly 8 very happy years of having Richard Sewell’s ministry at St Mary’s, Richard accepted a new posting. We are grateful to Richard and JulieAnn for all they have invested in St Mary’s and our congregation and all the initiatives from which we are now benefitting. We are now a much healthier, happier and welcoming church. On our Patronal Festival, September 16th, we had Richard’s Farewell service where we had Bishop Richard Cheetham preaching. This service also included Richard’s Commissioning service as Dean of St George’s College in Jerusalem, with Southwark as his sending Diocese. This was followed by a reception attended by many. Following Richard’s departure we have had the ongoing support of Sister Margaret Anne and Bishop Richard Harries whose presence and support has been most valuable. We owe them a huge amount of gratitude for supporting us through our interregnum which have contributed to the high number of people continuing to worship at St Mary’s. We have also welcomed a number of interesting and stimulating visiting clergy. We have also had the support of the clergy at St Michael’s., who have taken services at St Mary’s including presiding at marriages which have taken place at our church. We are equally grateful to the support of our readers Geoffrey Barnett and Christabel Gairdner, who have taken on many more duties in the vacancy, guiding us and taking many funerals and interments.

    City of Subiaco Heritage Place Record Name Uniting Church Address 315-317 Bagot Road Subiaco Lot Number 404/45 Photograph (2014) Construction Date 1897 Architectural Style Federation Gothic Historical Notes This building was constructed in 1897 for the Presbyterian Church and opened on 9th March 1898. The church was designed by architect James Husband McFarlane. Little biographical information has been found relating to this architect. He was born in Tasmania in 1863 and after a brief stay in Western Australia in 1898 he was back living in Tasmania by 1899 before relocating to Victoria. No comparative work by McFarlane was found in this research. A foundation stone was laid on Saturday 11th December 1897 by F. A. Mosely, a senior member of the Presbyterian Church. At the time of this ceremony The Western Mail described the plans for the church as follows. The building, when complete will be 45ft long by 30ft wide and 14ft high to the wall plate. The roof will be ceiled with diagonally-laid matchboards and the interior of the walls will be plastered. The windows will be of cathedral glass. The estimated cost of the church will be about £450. Several donations of materials have been made, including one of 10,000 bricks, given by the Mayor of Subiaco, Mr Doyle. The work of the erection is being carried out by day labour under the supervision of the architect, Mr J. H. McFarlane. The decision to build a Presbyterian church in Subiaco was part of a broader extension work of the Presbyterian church. The population of Perth in Western Australia during the 1890s grew rapidly in response to the gold discoveries.

    ROSS DEMPSEY BLANCHARD Chapter 1: December 1922 to 1927 I have a very strong belief that I was a gleam in my mother and fathers' eyes about Xmas 1922 or New Year 1923, for I arrived on the scene about 17:30 Western Standard Time on 28 September 1923 at Hay Street, West Perth, Western Australia. I have absolutely no personal recollections of this very important occasion. (Not sure where the name Ross came from, but second name, Dempsey, was the maiden name of my grandmother.) I was the second child, having an older sister, Margaret born in 1920, and a younger sister, Lesley born in 1928. My father had been appointed in 1919 to Ross Memorial Church, West Perth and in 1922 was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Western Australia. My mother used to tell me, some years later, that she had to be very careful to keep our front gate shut, otherwise I would get out and run like crazy down Hay Street with her in very hot pursuit. I have only two recollections of this period, and both of these were on board the steamship which took us to live in Wellington, New Zealand, in early 1927. The first of these was being a bit cheeky to one of the crew, and as a gesture to put me back in order, he grabbed me by the ankles and held me over the side of the ship. I was very excited at the sight of the white waves whistling past below, with absolutely no fear, but a little bit sad as my halfpenny fortune slipped out of one of my pockets and disappeared for ever.

Bishop Mouneer Anis’s contribution to the work of peace and reconciliation is invaluable. He has been instrumental in creating an ambitious, internationally acknowledged project, ‘The Imam Priest Exchange’, which has brought hundreds of Priests and Imams together to learn about one another’s traditions and beliefs and to commit to working alongside one another. His vision and efforts have enabled this programme to consist not simply of meetings, but of tangible follow up projects at grassroots level. Bishop Mouneer has made a unique contribution and example through his ability to establish deep relationships - largely through his openness, creativity and ambition to move people towards reconciliation. At times, this inevitably makes him a counter-cultural voice within his setting. Particularly of note is his role as a bridge builder in the Anglican Church’s most important official international Christian/Muslim dialogue with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and he is a most highly trustworthy representative for Archbishop Justin to the Grand Imam himself. Moreover, Bishop Mouneer is incredibly generous with his time: cultivating relationships with those from different faiths and background whilst running the Cathedral in Cairo, all within a context in which Christians are a vulnerable minority. He also maintains good contact across different institutions, with charitable and political leaders and brings together all these networks for the common good.
