LIFE ITSELF Sundance Press Kit V5.Docx 1 HAYATIN KENDİSİ / LIFE ITSELF ÖZET Tarihin en ünlü film eleştirmeni Roger Ebert’in sinemadan daha fazla sevdiği tek şey HAYATIN KENDİSİ… “Hoop Dreams”, “The Interrupters” gibi ödüllü filmleriyle tanıdığımız, belgesel sinemanın ustalarından Steve James’in kamera arkasında olduğu “HAYATIN KENDİSİ / LIFE ITSELF”, sinema tutkunlarını efsane eleştirmenin hayatına dair samimi ve duygusal bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. Kariyerine 25 yaşında Chicago Sun-Times’ta başlayan, film eleştirmenliğinin ciddiye alınması ve kurumsallaşmasında öncü bir rol üstlenen, bütün eleştirmenlerin kullanacağı bir yöntem olacak yıldız sisteminin yaratıcısı Ebert’ın son yıllarında blog’unda kaleme aldığı otobiyografisi, “Life Itself: A Memoir” adıyla kitaplaşmıştı. Bu kitaptan yola çıkan film, Roger Ebert’in sinema tarihinin yarısına yayılan serüvenine odaklanıyor. 2 ROTTEN TOMATOES SKORU: %97 (TOPLAM 183 ELEŞTİRİ) METACRITIC SKORU: 87 (TOPLAM 35 ELEŞTİRİ) 3 AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA The Hollywood Reporter Total Film The New York Times AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA Entertainment Weekly Variety Indiewire AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA Rolling Stone Chicago Sun-Times Village Voice AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA New York Daily News HitFix New Orleans Times-Picayune AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA ReelViews Portland Oregonian RogerEbert.com AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA Tampa Bay Times The Dissolve Chicago Tribune AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA St. Louis Post-Dispatch Miami Heald Christian Science Monitor 4 Yönetmenin Notu Roger Ebert’i ben de Amerika’nın büyük bölümü gibi Gene Siskel’la beraber yaptıkları çığır açan TV programı Sneak Previews ile tanıdım. Roger Ebert’s Film Festival 2017 April 19–23, 2017 Chaz Ebert, Co-Founder, Producer, and Host Nate Kohn, Festival Director Casey Ludwig, Assistant Director More information about the festival can be found at www.ebertfest.com Mission Founded by the late Roger Ebert, University of Illinois Journalism graduate and a Pulitzer Prize- winning film critic, Roger Ebert’s Film Festival takes place in Urbana-Champaign each April for a week, hosted by Chaz Ebert. The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Life Itself – Roger Ebert, In Memoriam: Two Thumbs Up Sophia Stein · Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014 Life Itself is such a poetic and fitting way to honor Pulitzer-Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert, a man whose life was the movies and who brought the pleasure and power of the movies to so many of us. The phenomenal documentary is directed by Steve James (Hoop Dreams), with executive producers Steve Zillian (Moneyball) and Martin Scorsese (The Departed) at the helm. With such an accomplished core creative team interpreting his memoir, life and death, Roger Ebert is in great hands. The film offers insights about the function of cinema, the symbiotic relationship between artists and critics, the cut-throat professional competitiveness, the transformative power of love at any age, and how to stare death in the eye and meet that final curtain call at the end of the “third act” with acceptance and grace. “The movies are like a machine that generates empathy,” Roger instructs. It is impossible to leave the cinema without feeling such deep empathy, respect and appreciation for this luminary. Roger’s passion for cinema was infectious, and thanks to him, we all caught the cinema bug. I felt privileged to have seen the film for the first time during its premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I took the opportunity to watch it a second time, just before conversing by phone with Roger’s equally brilliant wife, Chaz Ebert. Chaz spoke of how much she is looking forward to seeing the film in a theatre with a regular audience finally! — this Friday, July 4.

  • Introduction an Owner's Manual for Television
Introduction An Owner’s Manual for Television Ethan Thompson and Jason Mittell Imagine that you just purchased a brand new television, and inside the box, along with the remote, the Styrofoam packaging, and various cables, was this book: How to Watch Television. Would you bother to open the cellophane wrapper and read it? Sure, you might scan through the “quick start” guide for help with the connections, and the new remote control may take some getting used to, but who needs instructions for how to watch what’s on screen? Do- it- yourself manuals abound for virtually every topic, but TV content is overwhelmingly regarded as self- explanatory, as most people assume that we all just know how to watch tele- vision. We disagree. Thus, this is your owner’s manual for how to watch TV. First, a word of warning: this particular manual is not designed to tell you what to watch or not watch. Nor does it speak with a singular voice or seek to produce a consensus about what is “good” and what is “bad” on all those chan- nels. In other words, the forty writers who contribute critical essays don’t all agree on how to watch television. Despite the hundreds of years of cumulative TV- watching and dozens of advanced degrees among them, you can rest assured that, in many cases, they would disagree vehemently about the merits of one TV show versus another. This collection draws upon the insight of so many different people because there are so many different ways to watch TV and so much TV to watch.

  • Ray Solley Executive Director Tower Theatre Foundation
Ray Solley Executive Director Tower Theatre Foundation Ray Solley is the Executive Director of the Tower Theatre Foundation (TTF), a nonprofit organization that owns and operates the historic theatre in downtown Bend, Oregon. The Foundation promotes, programs, raises funds for, and rents the renovated Art Deco Moderne venue for a wide variety of performing arts events and organizations. Since Ray was hired in April 2009, the Tower: • established a four-month operating reserve fund • raised its membership and volunteer numbers to record highs • increased theatre usage and attendance In November 2010, the Foundation received a capacity-building grant from Oregon Community Foundation—the largest single amount awarded the Tower since its renovation in 2004. In 2011, Solley launched an educational outreach initiative called LessonPLAN (Performing Live Arts Now). Fueled by donations to the Stover Fund, the Tower enhances school curriculum and literature-based studies by bringing performing artists from around the world to the theatre and into Central Oregon classrooms. In 2012, LessonPLAN reached 3,500 students and families, receiving the Arts, Beautification and Culture Award for “substantially contributing to Bend’s culture.” Ray has invigorated the Tower, bringing the world’s best performers to the Bend Surgery Center’s “CenterStage Series,” and showcasing the finest community theatre productions in the “Marquee Series,” sponsored by BendBroadband. Solley moved to Bend after 26 years in Southern California. From 2005-2009, he was Executive Director of the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Foundation, overseeing all programming, marketing, fundraising, and day-to-day operations of the nonprofit. The diverse acts and personalities Solley has brought to Torrance and Bend include: Ed Asner, Spike Lee, Martin Short, Jo Dee Messina, Rita Moreno, Molly Ringwald, Peking Acrobats, Vienna & Moscow Boys Choirs, Hector Elizondo, Mariachi Divas, Celtic Tenors, Tower of Power, Peter Yarrow, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Geraldine Ferraro, B.D.
