In Support Of Keeping Houses Of Worship Nonpartisan August 16, 2017 Dear Senator: As a leader in my religious community, I am strongly opposed to any effort to repeal or weaken current law that protects houses of worship from becoming centers of partisan politics. Changing the law would threaten the integrity and independence of houses of worship. We must not allow our sacred spaces to be transformed into spaces used to endorse or oppose political candidates. Faith leaders are called to speak truth to power, and we cannot do so if we are merely cogs in partisan political machines. The prophetic role of faith communities necessitates that we retain our independent voice. Current law respects this independence and strikes the right balance: houses of worship that enjoy favored tax-exempt status may engage in advocacy to address moral and political issues, but they cannot tell people who to vote for or against. Nothing in current law, however, prohibits me from endorsing or opposing political candidates in my own personal capacity. Changing the law to repeal or weaken the “Johnson Amendment” – the section of the tax code that prevents tax-exempt nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates – would harm houses of worship, which are not identified or divided by partisan lines. Particularly in today’s political climate, engaging in partisan politics and issuing endorsements would be highly divisive and have a detrimental impact on congregational unity and civil discourse. I therefore urge you to oppose any repeal or weakening of the Johnson Amendment, thereby protecting the independence and integrity of houses of worship and other religious organizations in the charitable sector. -

Research Note James Luther Adams Bibliographies JARED A. FARLEY James Luther Adams (1901-1994) is widely considered the twentieth century’s leading Unitarian theologian. Serving as professor of theology and ethics at Meadville Lombard Theological School and the Federated Theological Faculty in Chicago, IL (1936-1957), and at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, MA (1957-1968), Adams authored innumerable sermons, essays and book chapters. Among scholars, he is known for having translated the works of Paul Tillich and Ernst Troeltsch into English. Among students of ministry, he is recognized for his arguments concerning the religious efficacy of voluntary associations, derived from his experiences confronting Nazism in pre-World War II Germany. An intellectual with an uncanny ability to recall information and see connections across diverse subjects, Adams drew deeply from the well of theological, historical, and social concern that was his life. His writings preserve much of what he came to believe. The following two bibliographies came about as a helpful by- product of my research on James Luther Adams. These titles list and cross-reference the sermons, essays and addresses of JLA that have been reprinted in the various edited volumes of his writings, including the recently published Prophet to the Powerful (2008). Exploring Boston’s Religious History It is impossible to understand Boston without knowing something about its religious past. SOCRATES TRIES CITY MAXAGEMEXT BY WM. S. BAILEY FROAI a sample of mud to the spirit of Socrates seems a far cry, yet seventy-five years ago the mud and the scholarly ghost of the ancient philosopher led to the founding of a wondrous city in the western end of X'ew York State. The city was to have been of unimaginable splendor and was to have ushered in a new civili- zation. Today its site is marked by a few circles of half-buried stones, and its memory is forgotten. Harmonia was the name of the dream city, and its cathedrals and stately halls were to have towered heavenward from the valley of the Kiantone, a small stream that rambles through a region of pastoral beauty but a few miles from Lake Chautauqua. Hither came, in 1852, a Milwaukee physician who, while in Xew York City, had heard of a spring of miraculous healing power on tke bank of Kiantone Creek and who "turned aside from my home- w^ard journey to examine the whole matter for myself," as he says. This Dr. Greaves was vastly impressed by what he saw and more particularly by what he was told. He learned that the curative value of the waters in the valley was known to the white settlers as far back as 1795 and to the Indians of a far earlier day. It was but a few years before the coming of Dr. Greaves that the two little Fox sisters at Hydesville, near Rochester, X^ew York, after becoming a village wonder with their rappings, had developed into the founders of modern Spiritualism, and during his visit to the Kiantone, Dr. -

UUCP Ministers Lon Ray Call Organizing minister 1946 to 1947 Lon Ray Call was our organizing minister. He was the American Unitarian Association's minister-at-large. Born in Advance, North Carolina, Call trained as a Baptist, entered the Unitarian ministry in 1923 and served churches in Louisville, Kentucky; New York City, and Braintree, Massachusetts before entering denominational work in 1933 and becoming minister-at-large in 1941. During the decade he served in that position, he personally founded thirteen churches. The fellowship program he conceived and initiated in 1947 resulted in the formation of 216 lay-led religious societies in its first decade. The First Unitarian Church of Phoenix arose out a relationship between Rev. Call and a woman he had first met when both lived in the Midwest, Isabelle Johnson. Laurence Plank Sept 1947 to Aug 1949 The Rev. Laurence Plank was called to be the first settled minister of the new church in March 1947. He was born in Sauk Center, Minnesota, attended Minnesota and North Dakota universities and received a masters degree from Columbia University in New York. He had served churches in Duluth, Minnesota; Dayton, Ohio, Rochester, New York, Omaha, Nebraska and St. Louis. He was an eloquent speaker and attracted many people to the church. He was instrumental in establishing a Sunday evening inter-racial discussion group at the YWCA.that may have influenced the Arizona legislature by constitutional amendment to desegregate Arizona Schools. He was a Theist but left the ministry in 1949 to write and to marry the former pianist at the church. -

American Liberal Pacifists and the Memory of Abolitionism, 1914-1933 Joseph Kip Kosek Americans’ memory of their Civil War has always been more than idle reminiscence. David Blight’s Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory is the best new work to examine the way that the nation actively reimagined the past in order to explain and justify the present. Interdisciplinary in its methods, ecumenical in its sources, and nuanced in its interpretations, Race and Reunion explains how the recollection of the Civil War became a case of race versus reunion in the half-century after Gettysburg. On one hand, Frederick Douglass and his allies promoted an “emancipationist” vision that drew attention to the role of slavery in the conflict and that highlighted the continuing problem of racial inequality. Opposed to this stance was the “reconciliationist” ideal, which located the meaning of the war in notions of abstract heroism and devotion by North and South alike, divorced from any particular allegiance. On this ground the former combatants could meet undisturbed by the problems of politics and ideological difference. This latter view became the dominant memory, and, involving as it did a kind of forgetting, laid the groundwork for decades of racial violence and segregation, Blight argues. Thus did memory frame the possibilities of politics and moral action. The first photograph in Race and Reunion illustrates this victory of reunion, showing Woodrow Wilson at Gettysburg in 1913. Wilson, surrounded by white veterans from North and South, with Union and Confederate flags flying, is making a speech in which he praises the heroism of the combatants in the Civil War while declaring their “quarrel forgotten.” The last photograph in Blight’s book, though, invokes a different story about Civil War memory.
