Julian Fellowes, the show’s creator, was in attendance, as was iconic television and film actress Susan Hampshire OBE. The real-life owners of Highclere Castle, The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, kindly hosted the evening during which guests were transported back to the 1920s and were able to bid on exclusive and unique prizes in a silent auction. All proceeds from the evening went to type 1 diabetes charity JDRF and the National Osteoporosis Society. An incredible total of £170,000 has been raised so far for these causes. JDRF funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. The 400,000 people in the UK who live with type 1 diabetes - including 29,000 children - rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive. The condition is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. The National Osteoporosis Society is the only UK charity dedicated to ending the pain and suffering caused by osteoporosis and fragile bones. Around 3 million people in the UK are affected by osteoporosis and every two minutes someone over 50 breaks a bone as a result of the condition. Mr Fellowes – whose full title is the Lord Fellowes of West Stafford – is a strong supporter of both causes.
