JUAN RAYNER RELATES GAYOSO HOTEL RAID - Contributed by Earl Pat Davis, 4515 Poplar, Suite #221, Memphis, TN 38117

Mr. Davis was given a copy of this letter in the late 1940's by Judge W.W. HUGHES, who maintained a law office with his father, Wi1s Davis.

Juan RAYNER was the son of Eli Rayner and Mary Ann C. JONES, who married in Fayette Co TN on 18 August 1841. She was the stepdaughter of Marcus B. REAGON. Eli (1815 28 Feb 1892) was born in Bertie Co NC. He migrated to Fayette Co TN and owned a cotton plantation near Oakland. However, around 1853 he decided to build a house closer to Memphis in order for his children to attend school. The house, which is still occupied, was built on a farm between the Memphis & Charleston railroad and Pigeon Roost Road. By the 1860 census index Eli 45 and Mary 33 had the following children: Joan 16, Lou (f) 13, Irene 11, Ada 8 and Eliza 6. Juan, about 16, was not listed in the household at that time. When he died Eli left five children Irene TURLEY (Mrs. Thomas Battle), Louisa HODGES (Mrs. W.R.), Juan, Eli and Whit.

His full name was Juan Timo1eon Rayner and he usually signed his name Juan T. to distinguish from another Juan Rayner. In the 1870 census Juan, age 26 born TN, was living in Haywood Co TN with his wife Mary, age 20, and daughter Catie, age 3. He enlisted in the Civil War at Randolph 14 May 1861 by Col. CAMPBELL in the 153th Senior Infantry, Co. E, as a private. Juan's Muster Roll cards give the following data: May 18; 1861 New Madrid, present; Aug-Oct 1861 absent, on sick furlough; May Jun 1862 present but absent 7 days without leave; Sep-Oct, Nov-Dec 1862 and Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr 1863 present; May 5, 1863 Shelbyville, TN present; Ju1-Aug, Sep-Oct, Nov Dec 1863 absent sick; Jan-Feb 1864 absent sick.

"500 West Orman Avenue Pueblo, Col. July 25, 1926 My dear Sister: You have asked me for an account of Forrest's ride into Memphis. It has been a long time ago since it occurred, as I was a boy of nineteen and now I am eighty years of age. General Forrest's command was encamped around Oxford, Mississippi, I think it was in August, 1863. Across the Ta11ahatchie River, a short distance from the town of Oxford was encamped A.J. Smith, who was on his way with a Federal army to raid Mississippi. We were totally unable to stop him with our small forces. The Talla hatchieRiver was a raging torrent from heavy rains and this condition delayed him from crossing. My regiment, known as "Forrest's Old Regiment", was ordered to Lamar, a small station a few miles North of Holly Springs, to tear up the track and cut off the enemy's communication with Memphis. In order to reach this point, we had to go around Holly Springs by the way of New Albany. At Holly Springs a large command of Federal cavalry was stationed to protect this communication. While a company of ours was engaged in tearing up the track, they were attacked by a company of Federal cavalry. Our regiment being drawn up about 100 yards from the station house and the night very dark, the enemy did not see us but attacked the men on foot tearing up the track. Our men ran towards us, the enemy followed and were almost entirely destroyed. Some of them however, got away and we had to make a rapid retreat in order to pass by Holly Springs. We retreated to Oxford the same way we came and arrived there the early part of the night in a downpour of rain. 4 "Ansearchin'" News

Family Gatherings (continued)

We learned that General Forrest with a part of his command had left that morn ing with a raid on Memphis by way of Grenada, at which point there was a bridge across the Tallahatchie River. He left a part of his command on the south side of the River to hold the enemy. The General left word that if any of the Memphis boys whose horses were in condition wanted to join the raiding party, they should follow, and seven or eight men, I among the number, who had unusually fine horses, decided to go. We had a hasty supper and then divested ourselves of all equipment except arms, saddles and bridles. We went down the River three or four miles from Oxford through the bottoms in intense darkness and the River running bank full and there swam across and made a bee line for Memphis, swimming the small streams on the way. We overtook General Forrest on the Hernando Road in the south edge of Nonconnah Bottom and reported to him. He instructed us to go forward with his brother Bill, who he said had the post of honor and would lead one mile ahead of the command into Memphis. We found Captain Bill before he got out of the Bottom and reported to him. By chance I got the first 4's in his command, our formation being in column of fours. We started from the bottoms at a fast lope to get the proper distance from the main army. About three hundred yards from the old Poston house, we encountered the enemy's videtta on top of a hill. He challenged us and we answered that we were a detachment of the 7th Illinois Cavalry returning from a scout. On his order to "Advance One," which is customary in such cases, John Kirk was sent forward by Cap tain Bill to kill or capture the vidette, on account of the rain John's pistol snap ped and the vidette immediately wheeled his horse and ran. John jumped his horse out of the road and four of us fired at the vidette, who fell to the ground. We then swept down on the picket posts who were camped at the corner of Poston's front yard, rode over them before they had time to get out of their beds, and I think most of them were killed. We then proceeded on the Hernando Road towards Mem phis, and when we came to the Old Ford house, we found a large body of ninety day men in camp. We were not challenged by their sentries but some of them asked what command it was. We replied that we were "Forrest's Cavalry" and they laughed at uS in a jeering manner and told us to go to hell. From this point we proceeded without firing a gun until we came opposite the old Provine place. Here we found a Federal battery which we captured by firing a few shots. We were told by some of the battery men that a regiment of negroes were in barracks down in the hollow. We left the battery telling the men to remain there until we returned, which, however, we didn't expect them to do, and raced dovm to the negro barracks. The next morning's Memphis papers reported that some two hun dred negroes were killed but it was too dark for us to make a count. We then proceeded towards the City, going in on DeSoto Street and then up Gayoso Street to the Gayoso Hotel to capture General Hurlbert, who was then in command of the city. Arriving at the Gayoso Hotel, we threw open the door and as many as the rotunda would hold, rode in. The only persons in the office were the night clerk and a Federal officer, who immediately surrendered. One of the boys broke into a cigar stand in the rotunda, took out a box of cigars and passed them around, all of uS being then dismounted. The Federal officer, speaking in a very pompous manner, said that ...hen he surrendered he supposed we were soldiers, "But now," he continued, "I see that you are a lot of damned guerillas." A boy about my own age jerked his gun to kill the officer but Captain Bill caught him by the arm, made him put up his gun and ordered him out of the Hotel, telling him that if he didn't know how to behave himself he had better stay out. Two or three minutes afterwards a shot was fired through the office window from the street and the officer fell dead, but we did not see who fired it. In the clipping you sent me about the raid, the writer stated that the man was killed by Captain Bill Forrest, This is an error for to my certain knowledge Captain Bill did his best to prevent it. Spring 1991 5

Family Gatherings (continued)

We failed to find General Hurlbert, although we searched the entire Hotel room by room. From the Gayoso Hotel about twenty of us went down to the Irving Block which was being used as a Federal prison to release the prisoners, but the doors were too strong. We pounded on it with our carbine butts without effect and having no battering ram we retreated in a hail of fire from second story windows and from the south end of Second Street. We went up Jefferson Street to Main Street and down Main Street back to the Gayoso House. As we passed Court Square a company of Fede rals kept a constant fire on us from across the Square. Luckily only one of the party was wounded, a boy by the name of Rhodes. On our arrival at the Gayoso Hotel, Captain Bill had his company drawn up in the street and we retreated over the same route that we came in. General Forrest with his main command had stopped to destroy a force camped around the old State Female College. There he had quite a battle, a good many men being killed and wounded on both sides. When we got opposite the battle near the Hernando Road, General Forrest withdrew his force and retreated across Nonconnah Bottom, our com mand bringing up the rear. The raid on Memphis accomplished what General Forrest intended, which was to force General A.J. Smith to retreat into Memphis instead of continuing on a raid into Mississippi. Your affectionate brother, Juan Rayner

HUMPHREY BATE ESTATE - Memphis/Shelby County Archives, 33 S. Front, Memphis, TN 38103

The Humphrey BATE estate papers are contained in Folder #5813 for 1859. There was such an important paper to genealogists in this folder that we wanted to share the information. A deposition was taken by John S. SWANEY 12 Sep 1859 in Sumner Co TN of Ann F. Bate which lists her children and heirs of husband Humphrey Bate, along with their birth dates, marriage dates and names of their husbands. Ann F. states her age as fifty-five and that she lives at Pleasant Grove, Sumner County TN near Castalian Springs where all the children were born and raised. No first daughter is mentioned.

Eugenia P. Bate, 2nd daughter, born 6 Sep 1826 married C.R. BASS 15 Sep 1842 (she is now single) Willie Ann Bate, 3rd daughter, born 17 Oct 1828 married Noel/Neel G. ROBBERTS 22 Jul 1852 Agnes E. Bate, 4th daughter, born 21 Sep 1834 married J.N. WRIGHT 21 Dec 1856 Amanda N. Bate, 5th daughter, born 23 Oct 1836 married Ariskew Bass 15 Mar 1857

This information was given to establish the heirs of H. Bate in order to settle the estate in Shelby Co TN. A. Bass and J.N. Wright purchased of the heirs for $1140 a tract of land in Shelby Co TN on the waters of Loosa Hatchie River in Civil Dis trict 1, Range 5, Section 4 near the Shelby Depot on the Memphis & Ohio Railroad containing 570 acres granted to H. Bate by the State of Tennessee. This was at tested by T.G. TRUE and R.L. WILLIAMS.

The Commissioners appointed to divide the land purchased by A. Bass and J. N. Wright were Hall Williams, Starkey FLEETWOOD, Rufus S. GRIFFIN, M.K. HERRING and Jack BOND? with John BROWN as Surveyor. They estimated the value to be $6.00 an acre. One of 6 "Ansearchin'" News

the lines of division crossed the "new bridge" over the Loosa Hatchie on the road leading from the bridge to the Depot. The land is bounded on the West by VAUGHAN, on the South by Gold Griffin, on the East by a tract formerly claimed by H.B.S. Williams and on the North by 90-acre tract formerly owned by Abe BLEDSOE.

WILLIAM HACK PETITION FOR CIVIL WAR CLAIM - Contributed by Betsy Foster West

While researching for information on the Germantown Methodist Church and the possi bility that the church made a claim to the U.S. Government for fire damages after the Civil War, Betsy requested the William HACK claim from the National Archives.

According to the Act of Congress of March 3, 1871, William Hack, who lived near Germantown, Shelby Co TN, filed a claim for "stores & supplies taken from him on his farm." He itemized these items taken 21 Dec 1863 as: 1 mouse-colored mule, 8000 rails, 200 bushels of corn, 1900 pounds of pork, 100 pounds of beef, 5 bushels of meal and 10 gallons of molasses. He estimated the total cost to be $750.00. The mule and the rails were taken by the troops under the command of Brig. Gen. LAWLER and the rest was taken by the troops under the command of Maj. Gen. W.T.SHERMAN. A.W. WILLS of Nashville, TN was authorized to act as his attorney. The witnesses who verified his claim were: Mary HARRIS, James E. MERRIMAN, James D. DAVIS, Moses Hack and A.H. GRISHAM.

William Hack signed a statement that he "had never voluntarily borne arms against the Government of the United States, for the purpose, or with the intention, of aid ing the late rebellion... " His witnesses to this statement were Benjamin CASH, Richard R. EVANS and former Mayor John PARKS. As listed in the 1860 census index William was age 63, but in the 1870 index he was listed as age 70.

THE TENNESSEE VALLEY STORY - Submitted by Marcelle C. "Bobbie" Stigall, 66 S. Fernway, Memphis, TN 38117

Mrs. Stigall relates that she could find nothing written about the history of the Tennessee River Valley years ago when she started research in Stewart, Houston, Hum phreys, Henry and Dickson counties. She put this story together from her notes, but to avoid the family history approach none of Mrs. Stigall's family lines were men tioned except the Humphreys.

THE TENNESSEE VALLEY STORY The "wild west" has long been glamorized in song and story but earlier American frontiers are ignored for the most part. The settlers of Kentucky and Ten nessee were the parents of those who went west, they too have their story and none is more interesting than that of the Tennessee Valley. In the fall of 1943, Postmistress Elizabeth Sexton, for the last time placed mail postmarked Danville, Tennessee aboard an L&N train; it was the uncere monia1 end of a very old settlement. Its beginning - a river landing and camp site for Indian hunting parties. The Tennessee Valley Authority had completed construc tion of a dam on the Tennessee River and the resulting backwater inundated all the valley along the banks of the old river displacing 4,000 people. Many of the oldest communities were lost and some of the states finest farms, among them the beautiful Spring 1991 7

Family Gatherings (continued)

manor house and farm of the Graffried family, immigrants from Baden, Germany. Other communities remembered by the older generation are Springville, Faxon and Sulphur Well. Even the dead did not rest in peace, cemeteries were moved, others surround ed on three sides by water were abandoned. The Old Irish Cemetery on Crooked Creek is one of these; there are 59 graves, many with markers intact. The Fitzsimmons family has many graves but those of special interest to historians are the Irish immigrants, builders of the railroad and bridge over the Tennessee River at Danville. It is a chilling experience to stand by the abandoned grave of an immigrant ancestor who died far from home and among strangers. The price for progress was paid and it was not in vain; jobs and cheap electricity brought prosperity to the Valley. Lifestyles improved from primitive to all modern conveniences; outdoor "Johns" remembered only in jokes. The settle ment that became the village of Danville is an Only in America Story. The area was a mini-melting pot long before railroads brought in an assortment of immigrants. The 1850 Census lists citizens born in Italy, Sweden, Germany, Scotland and Ireland. Seth Outlaw, owner of the site, named the town for his ancestral home in Virginia; until 1871 when Houston Co. was established it was District 5 of Stewart County. We tend to forget the atrocities practiced by Indians on the pioneers; the first Tennessee families, including Winchesters and Robertsons lost sons and brothers. The early settlers near the Tennessee River lived in log block-houses and the river was patrolled until treaties were signed in 1818. After that as many as 300 families a day arrived for settlement in the western lands now the states of Kentucky ~nd Tennessee. James Tayloe, father of first woman Governor, Nelle Tayloe Ross, describes in his Memoirs, a "land of milk and honey". Born on Leatherwood Creek in 1830, he recalled the abundance of game, fruit, maple sugar, etc. John Humphreys, County Surveyor for Wake Co., N.C. was one of the first District Surveyors to remain in the Valley; by the early l800s all his grown children and a number of other family mem bers had settled on the Creeks. Halliburtons, Reynolds, Burtons, Patterson and Alston families were all related. History records Martin Chartier, a deserter from LaSalle's Expedition, the first white settler (1692), in the wilderness that became Tennessee. North Carolina in 1783 sent out a company of surveyors guarded by 100 soldiers to plot and map the western lands. The state treasury being depleted by the Revolution, obligations to soldiers, legislators and patrons would be paid in western lands, the only available resource. Many of this party became the first settlers, surveyors received 1/3 or 1/4 of the land in lieu of money so they acquired vast amounts of acreage. They were for the most part, third generation Americans from substantial families and had varying amounts of education, none were illiterate. Soldiers of the Revolution re ceived 640 acres for privates, more, according to rank Many names of early Stewart Co. settlers are familiar to us today; Fitz hugh, Ross, Taylor, Frederick Smith, Boone and the Lee family of steamboat fame are just a few. Among families found often in early records are the Sextons, Whites, Lewis and Askew families; Elisha Askew operated a ferry on the Tennessee River in 1818. Martin Armstrong was in charge of settlements for the soldiers and controlled thousands of acres throughout middle and western parts of the state. Early captains of the local militia were Nathan Ross, Elijah Rushing, John Burton and John Warden, these were very important men in their communities. All able bodied men, ages 18-45 were required to serve; work on the roads also was an obligation. The Scotch and English pioneers were the leaders of social and political life; they were staid, hard-working, religious people who established schools and churches from earliest times. There was a book store and lending library at Nash ville in 1810 as well as lessons available in music and dancing. John Rice, the 8 "Ansearchin'" News

Family Gatherings (continued) wealthy bachelor who owned the site of Memphis, provided in his Will for schooling of the poor in the Cumberland District. Both Mr. Rice and Zachariah White, the first schoolmaster, were killed by Indians. Muster Day of the militia was a social time in the settlements; horse racing, cockfighting, cards and corn huskings were enjoyed. The Balls given by George Rogers Clark and Judge McNairy made history but the most notable was the one given by Andrew Jackson and attended by all Nashville prostitutes at his invitation. Two well known pioneers were from noble families, William Blount, territorial governor and Timothy DeMonbrun, French trader and later operator of Nashville's best tavern. Horse and slave trading were popular from earliest times. Many settlers brought slaves with them; Duncan Stewart for whom the County is named had 8. Sup plies and goods were brought in from Baltimore and Philadelphia, however, General Winchester and party made a flatboat trip to New Orleans as early as 1789. The round trip took 6 months, the return on horseback was a long, hard and very danger ous journey. One of the Sextons family boasted of making the trip over 60 times. The Steamboat Era beginning in the l830s brought in the outside world and so ended the frontier days. The Iron Ore Industry established primarily by Montgomery Bell and the Stackers from Pennsylvania first brought prosperity to Stewart Co. Many slaves were used at the furnaces but the allied industries provided wages for many men. During these years, Stewart Co. was second highest tax payer in the St~te. The famous Lee Line Steamboat Co. evolved from river transportation for this industry. At one time 17 furnaces were in operation in the Valley, the Industry flourished until the Civil War, afterwards a few survived but did not prosper. The building of the railroad bridge over the Tennessee River established a town at Danville. The project involved 4 years and so many workers lived on the banks of the river that it became more than a settlement. Many were Irish famine immigrants; it is to the credit of the natives that they tolerated the raucous some times unruly sons of the old sod. Coming from deprivation and hardship, they cele brated at every opportunity, often offending their Protestant neighbors. In a small way there was a class system; courtship among the children of the old guard and immi grants was frowned upon. The town boasted a Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Saw mill, Hotel and two Saloons. A row of frame stores was built very close to the rai17 road tracks with quarters in back for the proprietor; before very long sparks from tae coal burning trains set fire to the buildings and the entire block was destroyed. Hardships suffered by the population in the Valley during the Civil War have been well documented, it 1;\TaS said "Not a fence was left standing in Stewart Co." Dover, the County Seat was burned to the ground. Ft. Henry fell on Feb. 4, 1862, a few days later Federal troops occupied Danville and removed the trestle from the railroad bridge. The Hotel was used for a hospital, no commerce was allowed in the town and all food stuff was confiscated for the soldiers. One brave man risked his life to deliver cornmeal to the women and children left in the town. Houston Co. was established in 1871 from Stewart, Humphreys and Dickson Cos. A site central to the County was selected for the County Seat, the Irish called it Erin. It has always been a quiet and pleasant town. During the yellow fever epi demic, a hospital railroad car was sidetracked there for a time, an angel of mercy went aboard to minister to the sick. By 1900 little thought was given to the origins of the population; old cus toms had long since been abandoned and the criteria for prestige was financial. The melting pot had done its job, all were Americans. No Historic Marker honors the old town of Danville, its only memorial the forlorn silouette of the old railroad bridge still visible in the Lake. Extensive game and wildlife preserves line the Lake shore. Hunting and fishing once again are the occupations of the area, the Indians would feel right at home. Spring 1991 9

A memorial of the "Citizens of the District South of the rivers French Broad and Houlston" ask that they be relieved of paying to the State their debts and interest on their lands because: stagnated commerce; "scarcity of specie"; new taxes because of General Government's "j'ust war"; lawsuits over North Carolina grants and lower land values. 33-3-1813-7 The u.S. Government has authorized a road to be laid out to communicate between south-west counties of Tennessee and settlements and waters of the Mobile Bay on which troops of U. S. have laboured. The place of crossing the Tennessee River is claimed by the Chickasaw and Cherokee Indians; it has no ferry or stations of accommodation for the travelers. Petitioners are asking the govern ment "to cause an extinction of Indian title to the lands through which the road may pass to such an extent as will be sufficient for the establishment of a ferry and victualling station...and also for similiar stations and farming establishments at such ulterior points on said road ••• " Signers were. In a continuing effort to provide readers with names of early Tennesseans, we will begin abstracting the petitions for 1799 through 1803 in our Summer issue. These petition signers provide an alternative to an early census since Tennessee does not have an 1800 or an 1810 census, and most of the 1820 census for East Tennessee was lost. Spring 1991 15

ANCESTORS ARE WHERE YOU FIND THEM

Last June, Gail R. Redmann was in Wales doing research on her ancestors in the Vale of Glamor gan when she came across the following inscription on a tombstone in the Ewenny Priory church yard. In memory of Richard Vaughan Jones, son of John and Ann Jones of the parish of St. Brides. Major who was killed in the American War and lies buried in the city of Memphis, state of Tennessee, South America 16th of November 1863, aged 27 years.

John Jones who died November 25, 1875, aged 75 years Ann Jones who died June 4, 1877, aged 79 years ** ,!, ** Margie Koutroulis, 8238 Theisswood Rd, Spring, TX 77379 sends this notation from the Rosedale Cemetery, Rosedale, LA.

Jane D. Erwin, wife of Thomas S. Garrett, born near Nashville, TN June 28, 1822 Feb. 6, 1866; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Oct 27, 1848 - Feb. 22, 1862 ***** Mrs. Bettie B. Davis, Rt 1, Box 109A, Halls, TN found a picture of a 101 age woman in a Memphis, TN antique store. On the back of the picture was written "Mrs. Nancy Freeman, Unionville, Tenn. Taken the day she was 101 years old, 8th Feb 1902; Died 30th Dec 1902, aged 101, 10 mos & 22 days old." Mrs. Davis checked the 1860 Census Index to find a Nancy Freemon, 58, in Bedford Co TN. An atlas shows that Bedford Co does have a Unionville. The Tennessee Genealogical Society has the picture and will send it to a proven descendant. Spring 1991 33

BOOK REVIEWS Lynn Pierce Appling and Lincoln Johnson

DAVIDSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE COUNTY COURT MINUTES 1783-1792 by Carol Wells. 1990. Soft-back, 5tx8t. Full name Index, 275 pp. Order from Heritage Books, Inc., l540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 300, Bowie, MD 20716. $20.00, plus $3.00 shipping.

These court minutes are important because few records survive from this formative period in . Tennessee history when Davidson County encompassed all of middle and western Tennessee. They are also important' because many people are mentioned in the court minutes who do not appear in other records. County court responsibilities went beyond the hearing of lawsuits; roads and ferries had to be provided, brands and marks registered, orphans cared for, estates settled, and many other details of life handled in an orderly manner. In addition to providing a wealth of genealogical information, these abstracts give insight into life during the forma tive days of the county.

GENEALOGICAL DEED ABSTRACTS - MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA BOOKS 10-14 by Herman W. Ferguson. 1990. Soft-back, 8txll. Full name Index, 250 pp. Order from author, 600 Chad Dr., Rock Mount, NC 27803. $25.00

Mecklenburg County is located on the NC-SC line and was formed from Anson County in 1762. This book contains approximately 2300 abstracts from Mecklenburg. Book 10 begins with deeds recorded in 1778 and Book 14 ends with deeds recorded in 1794. Many of the instruments re corded are land grants made to Mecklenburg residents lying, for the most part, in that county, but some are grants for land in the "Middle District" of what is now Tennessee. A map is in cluded showing political boundaries, major streams, towns and churches.

A JENNINGS FAMILY GENEALOGY by Shirley A Jennings Weber. 1988. Hard back, 5tx8i. Full name Index, 602 pp. Order from the author, N. 410 E. Fairway Dr., Hoodsport, WA 98548. $38.50

"As Descended From Charles Lawson Jinings of Maryland and North Carolina To Seventh Generation of Samuel B Jinings in America." Seven generations of the Jennings/Jinings begin with Charles Lawson Jinings who was born at sea on the trip to America about 1752. The book is well docu mented with copies of maps, wills, bible records and pictures. A migration map locates his descendants in Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois. Sources for documentation of information is cited at the end of each persons history in order to assist those who care to pursue a family line further. Being alert to the new interest in medical histories, Ms. Weber has included the cause of death when known. Also included are three appendixes: "The Jennings Estate", "Undetermined Connections", and "Abbreviations Used."

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, KENTUCKY MARRIAGE RECORDS VOL. 1 1842-1865 and ABSTRACTS OF WILLS BOOK 1 1842-1924 compiled by Brenda Joyce Jerome. 1990. Hard back, 8ffXll. Full name Index, 205 pp. Order from compiler, 300 West Water St., Newburgh, IN 47630. $19.95 ($14.95 soft back)

The information in this book was obtained from marriage registers, original marriage bonds, licenses, returns from ministers and justices of the peace, consent letters from parents and guardians, and original wills. Kentucky was the first state west of the Alleghenies to pass a law requiring the registration of births, marriages and deaths on 9 Jan 1852, but this law was repealed 29 Aug 1862. Crittenden County was formed from Livingston County in 1842. Some Ten nessee surnames found are: Franks, McMican, Belt, McGraw, Gregory, Paris, Hughes, Grasham, Cruce, Millikan, Elrod, Gains, Daily, Ransom, Prowell and Smart.

MARRIAGES SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1882-1915 compiled by Duane L. Borden and Jeanette Conner Ritenour. 1990. Soft back, 8ffXll. Full name Index, 1120 pp. Order from Duane L. Borden, 5995 West Arizona Ave., Denver, CO, 80226, (303) 922-3402. $45.00, plus $5.00 p & h.

This book contains not only the marriages but the compilers have added extra data, such as, place of birth, age, occupation, parents, residences of the bride and groom, and much more. The marriage data was cross-referenced with the previously published nine volumes of tomb stone inscriptions for Shenandoah County and this information is included in the Remarks with the exact cemetery location. The importance of the combined information in this book is that it covers the period of time of the missing 1890 census. 40 "Ansearchin'" News
