MSS.5203-6 JOHN CLAUDE NATTES. Drawings by Nattes, 1780, 1797, 1799- 1801, n.d., of Scottish scenes and buildings with a few in north-east England (MS 5206, ff. 46-71). Nattes’ original sketchbooks were bound, somewhat haphazardly, into five volumes of which one (possibly the fourth) is missing. The chronological order of the drawings in MSS 5203-5 would appear to be:

MS 5204, ff.1-24 August 1797 MS 5203, ff.37-65 9-14 August 1799 MS 5204, ff.25-60 14-23 September 1799 MS 5203, ff.1-36 30 September – 10 October 1799 MS 5205, ff.1-47 12-30 Oct 1799 MS 5205, ff.48-81 August 1800

Most of the drawings in MS.5206 are undated: f.1 is dated 11 September 1780; f.38, 17 October 1800; ff.46 and 57, 3 and 6 November 1801. It would seem that ff.46-70 (possibly ff.40-70) were drawn in November 1801, but it is not clear which other drawings were made in 1780 and which in 1800.

Nattes made many drawings in 1799 whilst accompanying John (later Sir John) Stoddart on some of his travels in Scotland. Three of them were amongst those reproduced in Stoddart’s Remarks on Local Scenery and Manners in Scotland during the years 1799 and 1800 (London: William Miller, 1801), 2 volumes. Eight others were amongst those reproduced from etchings by James Fittler in Nattes’ Scotia Depicta (London: William Miller, 1804).

The drawings were owned by the Edinburgh bookseller David Douglas in 1875 (MS.5203, f.6) who annotated a number of the leaves. He allowed two to be reproduced in S.R. Macphail, History of the Religious House of Pluscardyn (Edinburgh: Oliphant, Anderson and Ferrier, 1881); seven in David MacGibbon and Thomas Ross, The Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland (Edinburgh: David

Douglas, 1887-92), 5 volumes; and one in MacGibbon and Ross, The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Scotland (Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1896), volume 1. All the reproductions are smaller than the originals. ii + 65ff.; 60ff.; 83ff.; iii + 70 ff. Folio.

Bought, Dowell’s, 27 February 1951, lot 400. Reid Fund.
