BEARKAT CAPTAINS WITH A BEARKAT WIN TRACE - Sam Houston would clinch at least a share of the Southland Conference title. It would be the eighth in program his- MASCORRO tory and first since 2016. Should the Kats win and UIW falls to Northwestern State, Sam Houston would clinch the title outright; however, with a win by SHSU and UIW, the teams would square off in the season finale next week in San Antonio with the league’s Automatic Qualifier bid for the NCAA playoffs on the line.
ZYON - Sam Houston would move to 5-0 overall and in Southland Conference play. It would be the first 5-0 start to a season and McCOLLUM a conference slate since 2016 when Sam Houston opened the year 11-0.
ERIC - K.C. Keeler would win his 238th career game. He entered the Spring 2021 season tied for 12th all-time among FCS head SCHMID coaches with Joe Taylor and Chris Ault among coaches who spent at least 10 years at FCS schools. He is 5 wins back of former Appalachian State head man Jerry Moore for 11th. Keeler’s 237 total victories are the second most among active coaches in the FCS behind only Al Bagnoli of Columbia who has 261.
COLBY - The Bearkats would win their fourth game in a row against the Cowboys, something they have never done in the history THOMAS of the series. It would also be SHSU’s fourth straight win in the series at Bowers Stadium with McNeese not having won in Huntsville since 2010. JOSEPH MORE BEARKAT BYTES WALLACE - After its win over NIcholls, the Kats jumped to No. 7 in the STATS Perform FCS national rankings. It marked the first time in 30 polls that the Bearkats were ranked in the national top 10. They were last ranked in the top 10 when they were ranked No. 4 entering a game vs North Dakota in Week 2 of 2018. The Kats lost that game, 24-23, in the final minutes. TREVOR WILLIAMS - The Bearkat defense has picked up right where it left off in 2019 and enters Saturday leading teams playing in the spring in the FCS with LEADERSHIP COUNCIL - Ramon Jefferson made a splash with 12 carries for 139 yards and a score in the season opener vs SLU, making him the first Bearkat to rush for over 100 yards in his Bearkat debut since James Aston had 115 yards on 8 carries in 2008. His IFE ADEYI ELEASAH ANDRESON 59-yard touchdown score in the first quarter was the longest run for SHSU since Corey Avery had a 50-yard run in 2017. MIKE DARE PEYTON FIFIELD Jefferson has a pair of 100-yard games this season after going for 107 yards on Thursday at NSU. CHANDLER HARVIN RYAN HUMPHRIES - SLU was driving late in the game in the season opener when Quentin Brown made a big stop on 3rd down & Tristin Mc- RAMON JEFFERSON JAHARI KAY Collum made followed with a great play on a 4th & 2 that forced a turnover on downs with only 2:21 left on the clock. The Kats went on to convert 2 first downs to kill the the remaining time for the win. TRACE MASCORRO TRISTIN McCOLLUM ZYON McCOLLUM MATT McROBERT - Since K.C. Keeler took over in 2014 the Kats have reached the 40-point mark 42 times, going 40-2 in those games. DALTON MEYER JALEN NORTH - The Kats are 19-11 all-time in the FCS playoffs and own the country’s third-best winning percentage (.655) in the DANIEL NORTH MARKEL PERRY playoffs, qualifying for the FCS playoffs 11 times in its history.
ISAAC SCHLEY ERIC SCHMID - With 2 playoff victories in 2017 at Bowers Stadium the Kats moved to 13-0 all-time in playoff games played in Hunts- DANZELL SIMS NOAH SMITH ville. The Kats had played, and won, at least 1 home playoff game in each of the previous 7 seasons prior to missing the playoffs in 2018. COLBY THOMAS JAYLEN THOMAS BRENNON TIBBS TREVOR WILLIAMS - K.C. Keeler is 27-0 in his career in home playoff games. Between his stops at Rowan, Delaware and Sam Houston the Bearkat head man has never had his team drop a game on its home turf. His Bearkat squads are 6-0 at Bowers Stadium in 4 playoff appearances. He was 8-0 in home playoff games at Delaware and 13-0 at Rowan. - The change to the spring season did not do much to effect the Bearkat’s player roster, but did effect the coaching staff. The Kats lost 2 coaches within a month prior to the start of the Spring 2021 season as defenisve line coach Tim Daoust left for East Carolina, and offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton took a similar position at Louisiana. - K.C. Keeler addressed those changes, beginning with the addition of Joe Morris as defensive line coach, coming to Huntsville after serving as defensive coordinator at West Texas A&M. On the offensive side, Chris Rogers, a former Bearkat center who led the Kats to the FCS title games in 2011 and 2012, takes over offensive line coaching duties while Matthew Merkens (son of former SHSU quarterback Guido Merkens) will take over coaching the Bearkat tight ends.
