Book Club, Offering, 6/7 The two big worship opportunities for a church are Easter and Women’s Bible Study, Golden Harvesters, Christmas. The third biggest attendance in churches in the United New address, July discussion group, June States is mother’s day. This year at First Lutheran we would like to Calendar June Volunteers, 8/9 focus on two more special days for a greater celebration, Pentecost and July Calendar Reformation Sunday. Pentecost is a celebration of the coming of the July Volunteers, June 10/11 Birthday & Holy Spirit and this year Reformation Sunday is significant because of Anniversaries, June Prayer List th the 500 anniversary of posting the 95 thesis on the door July Birthday & 12/13 Anniversaries, July of the church in Wittenberg. This date is marked as the beginning of Prayer List, Diakonia™ info, the reformation. Inspirational story Worship has always been, and will always remain central to our VBS info, Fox Country 14/15 Players Theatre faith, our community, and our church. Luther wrote in many places that Academy info, Sunday School our first duty is to thank and praise serve and obey him. The ELCA Snippets puts it well when it writes on their website, “There is also a basic pattern for worship among Lutherans. We gather. We encounter God’s word. We share a meal at the Lord’s Table. And we are sent into the world. But we do not think about worship so much in terms of what we do. Worship is fundamentally about what God is doing and our response to God’s action. Worship is an encounter with God, who saves us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.” Sometimes the importance of worship gets lost in schedules. And sometimes the importance of worship gets lost in other priorities. And sometimes worship gets lost in the routine of worship itself. I think what the people of First Lutheran have learned once again is that celebration and a full service is a wonderful experience. A full experience when the choir is singing and the congregation is fully The engaged in worship. We have seen that at Palm Sunday and Easter and Scripture Readings mother’s day. We have seen that at my installation. We would love to for see it at a number of other celebrations as well. It is not only good for June & July can be found on us, but it greatly encourages others in the congregation not to mention Page 2. to witness that it brings to visitors. JUNE-JULY LIBRARY NEWS (submitted by Diane Schlesinger)

Have you ever wondered about heaven and what it is like? Most of us have. Many books and movies have been made on the subject. There are several in our library that you might like to read.

“A Travel Guide to Heaven” by Anthony De Stefano describes what the author thinks heaven will be like after his study of scripture. “Glimpses of Heaven” by Trudy Harris, RN, a former hospice nurse, tells the true stories of over forty patients as they reach the end of life. In “To Heaven and Back” by Mary C. Neal, MD, the writer tells of her own experience. Having drowned in a kayak accident, she tells of moving from life to death to eternal life and back again.

On a lighter note, we have two new books that were recently donated to us. Given by Jerri Lynn Baker, “Stranded at Romson’s Lodge” by J. L. Callison is a mystery - the story of two teens abducted and stranded after their kidnapper crashes. “Biking Across America” written by Paul Stutzman tells of his coast to coast journey and the people he encountered along the way. This book was donated by Ruth Ann Hoehn.

I’d like to thank Kathy Benoit and the Sunday school for giving the Sunday School offering in support of Congratulations to our college graduates: the Colorado Veteran’s Project. Ruth Ann’s Ramblings …(contributed by Ruth Ann Hoehn)

Elizabeth Cruciger was born to Polish nobility around 1500. Like Katie Luther, she entered the convent and was a nun who was influenced by the writings of Dr. Luther. She escaped the convent and lived with the Bugenhagen family in Wittenberg until she married in 1524. She has the distinct privilege of being known as the first female writer and poet. In addition to being a close friend of Katie Luther, it is believed that Elizabeth sat at Dr. Luther’s table talks in Wittenberg with her husband Caspar Cruciger, a theologian friend and colleague of Luther’s. Living in Wittenberg, hearing the pure preaching of God’s Word, and sitting at the feet of the Reformation’s foremost theologians, she was inspired to write the text to the hymn, “The Only Son from Heaven” (LBW 86). Elizabeth died May 2, 1535 in Wittenberg.

Catherine Winkworth (September 13, 1827 – July 1, 1878) was an English-language translator from . She was born near the and lived most of her early life in where her father had a silk mill. She subsequently moved with the family to Clifton, near .

Catherine Winkworth spent a year in , during which time she took an interest in German hymnody. Around 1854, she published her book Lyra Germanica, a collection of German hymns which she had translated into English. Other collections were published in 1858, 1863, and 1869. According to The Harvard University Hymn Book, Winkworth "did more than any other single individual to make the rich heritage of German hymnody available to the English-speaking world." 27 hymns in the (our green hymnal) were translated by Catherine Winkworth, including “Dearest Jesus, at Your Word” and “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty.”

She also worked for wider educational opportunities for girls. She was the secretary of the Clifton Association for Higher Education for Women, and a supporter of the Clifton High School for Girls, and a member of the Cheltenham Ladies' College.

Catherine Winkworth died suddenly of heart disease near on July 1, 1878 and was buried in Monnetier. A monument to her memory was erected in Bristol Cathedral.

John Mason Neale (January 24, 1818 – August 6, 1866) was an Anglican priest, hymn-writer and hymn-translator. He was born in London, to the Reverand Cornelius Neale and Susanna Neale. He was educated at Sherborne School, Dorset, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Neale was named after the Puritan cleric and hymn writer John Mason, a descendant of his mother.

At the age of 22, Neale was the chaplain of Downing College, Cambridge. At Cambridge he was affected by the Oxford Movement and helped to found the Cambridge Camden Society (afterwards known as the Ecclesiological Society).

In 1854 Neale co-founded the Society of Saint Margaret, an order of women in the Church of England dedicated to nursing the sick. He was also the principal founder of the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association, a religious organization founded as the Anglican and Eastern Orthodox Churches Union in 1864.

Neale translated the Eastern liturgies into English, however, he is best known as a hymn writer and translator, having enriched English hymnody with many ancient hymns translated from Latin and Greek. There are 20 of his translations in the LBW, including “All Glory, Laud and Honor”, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and “Good Christian Men, Rejoice.”

Catherine Winkworth and are commemorated by the Lutheran Church on July 1st. The Anchor Page 5

diakonia™ Is Coming!

Are you ready to take the next step in your growth as a Christian and in your service to your congregation and community? If so, you are looking for diakonia™! The next series of courses will meet on Tuesdays, beginning September 5, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church, 2650 Plainfield Rd., Joliet, IL.

Information Meeting Scheduled Find out more about diakonia™ and bring your questions:

 Tuesday, June 20th, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.  Firside Room, John Lutheran Church, 2650 Plainfield Rd. (Route 30 at Hennepin Drive, just east of Westfield Louis Joliet Mall), Joliet, IL

RSVP (or send queries) to Dr. Trenton Ferro, Location Manager, [email protected] or (724) 762-0305.

What is the diakonia™ program? diakonia™ is a two-year process of spiritual formation and theological education for baptized members of the Lutheran Church. This process occurs in three basic ways:

 By thorough grounding in the classic seminary disciplines of practical, systematic, historical, and Biblical theology;  By identifying particular skills and aptitudes in ministry and encouraging their use in the local parish and community; and  By providing spiritual growth through worship, retreats, and a supportive community of fellow students, pastor-mentors, and instructors.

These are the tools diakonia™ uses to help equip God’s people for service in parish and neighborhood ministries. The primary theme and focus of the diakonia™ experience is the word of Jesus in scripture: “Let the one who would be great among you be your servant [Greek: diakonos]” (Mark 10:4).

The Missing Lamps In a certain mountain village in Europe several centuries ago, a nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to people in his town. At last he decided to build them a church building. No one saw the complete plans for the building until it was finished. When the people gathered, they marveled at its beauty and completeness. Then someone asked, “But where are the lamps? How will it be lighted?” The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls. Then he gave to each family a candle which they were to bring with them each time they came to worship. “Each time you are here the area where you are seated will be lighted,” the nobleman said. “Each time you are not here, that area will be dark. This is to remind you that whenever you fail to come to church, some part of God's house will be dark.” Page 14 Volume 30, Issue 6
