Dilemma of Unconscious, Jouissance and Phallus: a Psychoanalytical Study of Gender and Identity
OF JOURNAL CRITICAL REVIEWS ISSN- 2394-5125 VOL 7, ISSUE 19, 2020 DILEMMA OF UNCONSCIOUS, JOUISSANCE AND PHALLUS: A PSYCHOANALYTICAL STUDY OF GENDER AND IDENTITY Dr. Nipun Chaudhary Associate Professor, Dept. of English, Lovely Professional University, India Email: [email protected] Received: 14 April 2020 Revised and Accepted: 8 August 2020 ABSTRACT: Lacan escalates his insistence that woman is not a solidified or rigid entity rather she flows like the flow of the liquid and the rush of the feminine flow perforates masculine and garbed solidity of phallic prick and intensifies the fear of castration for the male. Irigaray advances and ramifies Lacanian assertion by adding that the feminine flow may not simply be measured as the hysteric or unrestrained discharge of female vagina; on the contrary the discharge of feminine olfactory is a real challenge for masculine solidity. Concisely, the feminine jouissance flows in its own pleasure, without any consideration of defying the masculine solidity. However, the feminine jouissance is liberated, redemptive and narcissistic and above it exists as a gratuitous pure jouissance; redeemed of any desire to dominate. KEYWORDS: Unconscious, Jouissance, Phallus Paper Freud undertook a challenge of dividing the human mind into three segments which, as a composite structure, is known as the topography of the human mind. Superego, ego, and id indulge in a dialogue to consummate the desire of the narcissistic ego which for Freud is the pleasure- seeking agency, i.e., id. According to Lacan, the ego is not a separate agency rather it is closely knit within the cathexis of libidinal energy. Love and illness transfer ego projection; Love transfers ego to the other body by cathexis. -

It takes as its starting point the Lacanian dictum that “the big Other does not exist”, and then attempts to find a way that allows us to go beyond historicist discursive regimes diagnosing these regimes as a refusal to accept the nonexistence of the big Other. The research focuses as well on the discourse of being Heidegger articulated in Being and Time, and how its “failure” may be read from a Lacanian perspective. -

PSYCHOLOGY DON’T MAKE A FREUDIAN SLIP Resources for Courses Activity Overview Outlining Freud’s Theory of Gender Development is a difficult task. Firstly, there are a lot of specialist terms that students often fail to include (e.g. unconscious processes, identification and internalisation) and secondly, it is very difficult to write a concise summary of Freud’s Theory because there is so much to include. The aim of this task is to consolidate student’s knowledge of the key Freudian terms and to practice writing a concise summary of Freud’s Theory of Gender Development. Resources Required . Don’t Make A Freudian Slip Handout Teacher Instructions Teaching & Learning Strategy A Provide the students with a copy of the Don’t Make A Freudian Slip Handout. Ask the students to read each paragraph in turn and add in the missing specialist terminology. After that, once you have gone through the answers, ask your students to highlight the specialist terminology related to Freud’s Theory of Gender Development. Once your students have completed the first task, ask them to write a concise summary of Freud’s Theory in approximately 125-175 words, while trying to incorporate all of the key features of Freud’s Theory. Tell the students to image that they are answering the following exam question: Describe and evaluate Freud’s psychoanalytic explanation of gender development. (16 marks) If you want to be cruel, only give your students six-eight minutes to complete their summary, as this is roughly the length of time they would have to write an outline in their exam. -

SLIPS OF THE TONGUE: THE FACTS AND A STRATIFICATIONAL MODEL by Gary S. Dell and Peter A. Reich One of the best ways of finding out how a system is constructed is to observe what happens when that system breaks down, when it fails to operate perfectly. Suppose you regularly receive a check from a small company, The check may be generated by a human being, or it may be produced by a computer. So long as everything operates perfectly, it would be impossible to determine which. But you may get clues if a mistake occurs, because computers and human beings make different types of errors. If you get a check for $0.00, it is likely to be a computer error. If you get a check for $517.00 when you are owed $571.00, it is likely to be a human error, because human beings often transpose digits. Similarly, if your goal is to find out what the system is like that underlies language, it can be very useful to look at what happens when things go wrong. This is the issue to which this paper is addressed. We shall review one class of language errors-slips of the tongue-to explore the implications this phenomenon has toward understanding in general how language processing works in human beings. We shall argue that stratificational grammar may be on the right track as a model of language behavior, because a modified version of it can be designed that makes very humanlike errors. THE FACTS Slips of the tongue as a Iinguistic phenomenon have been known about and studied since before the time of Freud. -

In addition, we used regression analysis to verify the potential of the IDCP dimension clusters (related to personality disorders) to predict defence mechanisms, revealing some minimally expressive predictive values (between 20% and 35%). Discussion: The results indicate that those who tend to use immature defence mechanisms are also those most likely to present pathological personality traits. -

Defense Mechanisms According to Sigmund Freud, who originated the Defense Mechanism theory, Defense Mechanisms occur when our ego cannot meet the demands of reality. They are psychological strategies brought into play by the unconscious mind to manipulate, deny or distort reality so as to maintain a socially acceptable self-image. Healthy people normally use these mechanisms throughout life. it becomes pathological only when its persistent use leads to maladaptive behavior such that the physical and/or mental health of the individual is adversely affected. The purpose of ego defense mechanisms is to protect the mind/self/ego from anxiety and/or social sanctions and/or to provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope. Defense mechanisms are unconscious coping mechanisms that reduce anxiety generated by threats from unacceptable impulses In 1977, psychologist George Vaillant took Freud’s theory and built upon it by categorizing them, placing Freud’s mechanisms on a continuum related to their psychoanalytical developmental level. Level 1: Pathological Defenses The mechanisms on this level, when predominating, almost always are severely pathological. These six defense’s, in conjunction, permit one to effectively rearrange external experiences to eliminate the need to cope with reality. The pathological users of these mechanisms frequently appear irrational or insane to others. These are the "psychotic" defense’s, common in overt psychosis. However, they are found in dreams and throughout childhood as well. They include: Delusional Projection: Delusions about external reality, usually of a persecutory nature. Conversion: the expression of an intra-psychic conflict as a physical symptom; some examples include blindness, deafness, paralysis, or numbness.
