“WHO IS THE GOD WHO CALLS US AND LEADS US?”

In the book of Hebrews, we are called to look to Jesus, who is “the author and finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus makes faith – and God – more real to us. We understand that God gave us life and is our shepherd, companion, and strength. But, who is this God and how can we understand how all this works? There is no easy answer, but consider what we do know.

God is so great that no one image of God is enough. This truth is reflected in the response that God gave to Moses, after calling him to deliver his people from bondage under the Egyptian pharaoh. Moses questioned whether his kinfolk would accept him as a leader and deliverer. What authority did he have? “Moses said to God, ‘If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The

God of your father has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ ion what shall I say to them?’ God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am’ – Say to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14) Di TAT Me

It is this God, this wholeness outside of us, but also within us, this wisdom en

underlying all existence, who calls us to travel onward and upward in our en T L Lenten journey. This awesome God is also found in the smallest flower and in the life of a little child, first grasping the feeling of security in its parent’s arms. “I am!” God IS, and you and I are part of God’s purpose in existence.

The great “I am” helps us to BE. Our lives are centered, not in doing, but in being. Doing is the expression of our being. Our looking for new and greater horizons, then, calls us to be more sure of who we are, as well as how our being reflects God’s – and Christ’s – being. The word, “Namaste,” often spoken in yoga classes, but originating in religions of the orient, means, “I salute the divine, the higher self, within you.” It is this center of our being that travels onward and upward at God’s call.
