Central Southland College Stage Challenge SuperStars!

Once again CSC was well represented at the annual Southland Stage Challenge competition.

Our theme this year was about the power of music to celebrate, protest and express ourselves. It was a very entertaining show and every member of the cast and crew did our school proud!

Even though we didn’t come away with a placing we did receive Awards of Excellence for costume, set crew, choreography and performance skill.

Many thanks to all staff and students who contributed to this awesome event, and to parents for their support. Bring on 2017, we’ll have another go at getting the title back! CSC Board of Trustees ELECTION Closes midday, Friday 3rd June 2016

From the Principal Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

This term we welcome Mr Jegousse to Central Southland College, Mr Jegousse is our new teacher of French, he is also taking charge of 9Ba and is threatening to introduce petanque! Welcome to the staff of CSC!

Thank you to the parents that have put themselves forward to stand for the CSC Board of Trustees. You will be receiving information about the candidates next week by mail. It is important that you take this opportunity to vote for those you would like representing your school community in this capacity.

Last Wednesday we saw a team of over 100 CSC students off to Invercargill for the annual Stage Challenge competition held at the civic theatre. Their performance was outstanding, enhanced by an amazing backdrop and evidence of the huge amount of talent we have at our school. Thank you to Mrs Wilkinson and her team of helpers for all their hard work and also to the many students who were involved in planning and preparation.

Well done to all those competitors who ran the cross country in atrocious conditions last week, and the staff that braved the weather. This certainly exemplifies the CSC “get stuck in attitude”!

Friday the 3rd of June our staff will be attending the Rural schools professional development day for staff. For our students this means no school on that day. For our staff—we will be collaborating with colleagues from our neighbouring schools with a particular focus on curriculum and assessment needs while making the most of an opportunity to share teaching and learning ideas across our schools.

SPORT REPORT STUDENT NEWS

YEAR 11 REPORT Form Challenge Last Friday, we had our first Inter-form challenge with our new Dean, Mrs Ballantyne, to decide who would take the trophy. We competed in a range of challenges created by the form teachers. They involved an eating contest, puzzles, shooting basketball hoops and running. Each form class had four teams of six for each event. The form class that finished all events first was the winner. Congratulations to 11Br who took it out, closely followed by 11Gr. Jenesis Petallana HERE @ CSC This week our focus is “Responsibility”. At CSC some good examples are: if you miss a day of school, it is your job to catch up on work - this is taking responsibility for your learning. If you are committed to a sport or group, it is your job to be on time—this is taking responsibility for your commitments and your time management. All students have the responsibility to be kind, and look out for each other. Lachie Watson

Stage Challenge 2016 On the 11th of May students from CSC competed with other schools in the annual Stage Challenge. Our team had been practicing for over a term. The theme this year was based on how music brings us together. Although we didn’t win it was still a great experience and everyone tried their best! The day would not have been possible without the help and organisation of all the patient teachers behind the scenes. Stage challenge is a fun way to get involved and and is a highly recommended activity. Lets hope next year is our year! Britney Singh

National Youth Drama School During the holidays I was lucky enough to attend the National Youth Drama School for a week up in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. There were 260 14 - 20 year olds from all around New Zealand attending. NYDS offers a range of different classes such as Shakespeare, Circus Skills, Short Film, Advanced Acting, Directing, Musical Theatre, Songwriting and many more. I attended the Dance For Commercial Performance, The Acting Voice and Zombified Makeup courses.

I learnt so much and the tutors had heaps of experience and knowledge to pass on. Everyone was super friendly and I hope I get the chance to go again next year! Kendra Wadsworth

Year 9—A Laugh Off

On a gloomy Monday afternoon, arrives the latest form challenge. 9Wn had confidently dared 9Ba to a unique new challenge called ‘try not to laugh’; a battle consisting of jokes and straight faces. Five ‘jokers’ and five ‘staunchers’ from the two classes competed through a series of 10 rounds filled with laughter and cheers where the ‘joker’ had 20 seconds to try and make the ‘stauncher’ smile. At the halfway mark, 9Ba lead with a score of 4-1. By the 8th round, 9Wn had almost caught up with the score but at the end of the 9th round, 9Ba won 6-3.

It’s always nice to see a fun competition, so come on Year 9, lets make some unique challenges that have never been done before and take on opposing classes!! Gabriella Alexandra, 9Ba

Southland Schools Chess Champs! On Monday 16th May a team of seven students entered the Southland Schools Chess tournament after weeks of playing during lunchtime. The day was tightly fought with many lessons learned in tactics and use of the timer. Those who competed were Ethan Sullivan, Joseph Taylor, Larissa Beck, Logan Cox, Matthew Stringer-Toomey, Maui Duley (pictured left) and Nadeen Alshadi.

Our best four players took home the team bronze medal. The team hope to be in action again later in the year for the Dunstan exchange and other tournaments. Watch this space!

STUDENT NEWS Year 12 Biology Camp We have just completed our annual pilgrimage to Portabello in Dunedin for our much loved “Crab” Camp. This year three classes of year 12 Science and Biology students attended over two days. We learnt about life in the inter-tidal zone and how to analyse the adaptation of the species that live there. All this leads to the assessment for our ecology topic (AS 91158). A big thank you to all the teachers who helped out - Miss Harrison, Mr Ennis, Mr Knapp, Mrs Baird, and Mrs Catto who was our bonus added extra adult.

The next step for the students is to complete the assessment. I encourage you all to talk over what you learnt at home and make sure you look up the exemplars on the NZQA website. by Annie Keown

Alex Rocks It Out Alex Dykes found himself performing on the same stage as several New Zealand music greats at a concert in Wanaka on Sunday night.

Alex, a Year 11 student, was invited to open the YAMI Sounz Summit showcase concert, taking to the same stage as from and from Fur Patrol, after the song he wrote during the weekend workshop attracted the attention of the top-selling Kiwi artists.

He was taking part in a two-day Youth and Adults in the Music Industry (YAMI) event, attended by about 150 people from throughout Otago and Southland, where workshops led by the kiwi music legends were offered. The event allowed participants to work with the kiwi musicians and tutors learning about song writing, audio production and singing.

His original song “Run” attracted the attention of Julia Deans and he also worked one on one with and . Alex said “It was amazing. They were really positive about my song and helped me to develop it.”

The culmination of the two-day event was a showcase featuring highlights of the weekend, and Alex said he was shocked when the Kiwi artists approached him to open the show. "I was surprised, but really pleased to be asked. It was a great experience."

Alex was the only Southlander at the event and said he had gained a huge amount from the weekend. He will be putting his new skills to use for his NCEA music credits and his up-coming entry in this year's Smokefree Rockquest competition in June.

Sporting Successes We are really proud of our high rates of participation and involvement in a whole range of sports and there have been heaps of successes from our Year 10 group, too many to list all of them but here are a few:  Jacob Hammond - gaining two 2nd places in last Sunday’s trapshooting competition.  Quad Exchange team to Cromwell - second placegetters.  Della-May McDermott and Karlee Cruickshank representing CSC in the Southland Maori Netball team.  Shaun Woodd, Quinn Robins and Rachel Alexander placing 2nd in the Mixed Division of the National Triathlon event .  Luke Hamilton selected for the Southland U17 basketball team.

Congratulations to all those mentioned and everyone else who is representing CSC in the sporting arena.

Stage Challenge On Wednesday the 11th of May, 110 performers set off for the Civic Theatre in Invercargill to compete in Stage Challenge for 2016. The Central Southland College ‘Music Machine’ performance had a lot of hard work and dedication put into it, with Year 10’s having quite a lot of people participating! The show was huge and we enjoyed every minute of it!

Thank you to Mrs Wilkinson for all of her hard work and dedication. Also a huge thank you to Miss Vedder and Mrs Carter who designed the amazing costumes! We also owe a big thanks to Mr Knapp and the Set Crew for all of the hours of hard work you all put into the amazing set for the show. Thank you to all of the other teachers who helped with the show, and came along to support our school!

Subject News - Art and Social Studies In Art we have recently been studying the world-renowned artist Shane Hansen. He has a clean stroke and likes to incorporate his heritage and love for fashion into his artwork. We have been tasked this week with designing our own skateboard which has been influenced by Shane Hansen’s heritage and colour pallet. In recent weeks we have also gone on a Social Studies trip throughout Western Southland. We studied the history of a few small towns which was quite interesting, including the movement and changes that have happened over the years. There is a lot of fascinating history right at our back doorstep. “Broncbusters” Talent Quest Curtis Swann (Year 9) attended the Broncbusters Talent Quest in Invercargill at the end of the holidays. This is a country music based talent quest that has been held annually since 1987.

Curtis plays guitar and sings. He won the Intermediate Country Rock section, came 2nd in the Intermediate Open Solo and placed 2nd in the Gospel section. He also got Intermediate Overall runner up.

Well done Curtis!

Otago Tertiary Open Day On Monday 9th May, thirty Year 13 students attended the Otago Tertiary Open Day. While in Dunedin, the students had the opportunity to visit different tertiary providers, attended presentations and visited some of the Halls of Residence. The day was a great opportunity for our senior students to do some planning and investigating for 2017.

College of Education Applications We have met with students who intend to apply to the College of Education next year – both Primary and Early Childhood. We recommend that they spend a day in a Primary School or Early Childhood centre. An excellent opportunity for this will be on our Teacher Only Day (Friday 3rd June). Students are encouraged to complete their draft applications this term, ready to bring to Careers staff for checking at beginning of Term 3.

University of Canterbury are holding an Open Night and information evening for parents and students at the ILT Stadium at 6 p.m. on 1st June. Please register your attendance on line if you would like to go.

Year 12 Interviews After Year 12 Career Interviews last term, we are emphasising the need for students to gain their Literacy (Level 2) and Numeracy (Level 1), as well as the importance of focussing in the classroom across all subjects, in order to achieve Level 2 to the best of their ability this year. We will be encouraging students to set realistic goals so that they have real choices when they leave school. Year 12 grades are vitally important when applying for courses, halls of residence and scholarships at Year 13.

Sussed – StudyLink Sussed online is a great way to get thinking about what it will cost to live away from home and study. Will it be broadband and baked beans? Part-time jobs or parents helping? Hear from students about their experiences and the choices that need to be made. You’ll also find out more about StudyLink and what they do along the way. We encourage students and parents to check it out at www.studylink.govt.nz. In the past Studylink have come to CSC to give information to students and families, but this service is no longer available so please make yourselves familiar with this website. There is a Studylink office in Invercargill where you can make individual appointments if you need to.

Soils Makes Sense Roadshow Our Year 12 students recently heard from 10 successful young Southland people who are all working in Primary Industries.

Career Resources There is a huge range of Career information and resources available for students to access and take home from Student Services. Encourage your son/daughter to come in for a look.
